| Essays: Chicago style, APA, MLA, HELP!! Ok, so I started college last term and I was introduced to APA format. This term I have to write a paper for my history class and I have to used the Chicago style of notes and bibliography! I am still confused enough about APA, lol! Can anyone help me regarding the Chicago notes and bibliography style? What I am mainly confused about is if I am citing the same source several times, how do I number that and how is it displayed in the footnotes? For example, let's say I use Book A 3 times on one page, would I number all three instances of Book A as number 1 or 1-3 and does it get listed 1 or three times in footnotes? I don't know if that makes sense or not, I hope it does to somebody! Thanks in advance!

| You number after each quote or fact that you want to cite, even if it is the same source. In the footnotes, you would list each number and use "ibid" if it is the same source several times in a row. If the page numbers in the source vary for each quote or fact, indicate that after the ibid.

| Chicago style has 2 documentation styles. For Notes and Bibliography style .....and if you are quoting from the same book or article you would use this style: Chapter or other part of a book 1. John D. Kelly, “Seeing Red: Mao Fetishism, Pax Americana, and the Moral Economy of War,” in Anthropology and Global Counterinsurgency, ed. John D. Kelly et al. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010), 77. 2. Kelly, “Seeing Red,” 81–82. You would still place a number, next to the information extracted for your paper, but you would only place minimal info underneath for the bibliography. For Author and Date style you would do it this way: Chapter or other part of a book Kelly, John D. 2010. “Seeing Red: Mao Fetishism, Pax Americana, and the Moral Economy of War.” In Anthropology and Global Counterinsurgency, edited by John D. Kelly, Beatrice Jauregui, Sean T. Mitchell, and Jeremy Walton, 67–83. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. (Kelly 2010, 77) Hope this helps...and here is a link that might offer you more info....Good luck! |

| Ok, so let's say I'm using the same source five times. In the footnote, I would list one footnote with all info one time and then a second footnote listed as 2-5 Ibid., p. 345, p. 346, p. 347, p. 348 Or would I have five lines of footnotes? I'm sorry, I know I am so stupid on this, but I have been trying to find an essay that shows this. I am a visual person! lol! Thanks!

For Ibid., I would do a separate line for each one, even if you do it 4-5 times in a row. Keep in mind that you don't need to footnote each of your sentences. Use your judgment where to place the footnote. If you have a paragraph or two pulling facts or ideas from a single source, footnote at the end of that section. For a quote, I would footnote at the end of the quote or sentence containing the quote. The style Lil Fu Fu Girl referenced is good too. I believe it is a matter of preference. For the bibliography, include one full citation for each source. Ibid should be italicized with a period, I believe, but here is an example (scroll down): Powered by Google Docs

Ok, so I could run them in a row, that's good to know. Great point about the paragraphs, now I just need to write the paper! I chose Steve Jobs! Seems kind of funny for a history paper, but he was on the list and I find him interesting! Thank You so much for your help, I really appreciate it! I didn't even know about this style until this term!

I want to clarify to make sure we are thinking the same thing relative to footnotes; each one would have an individual line at the bottom of the page: 1 full citation 2 Ibid. 3 Ibid., p.343

Ok, that makes sense. I assume that if I then have another source in between, I would then have to do the full citation when I go back to the previous one? Thank You again!

| Our students at the high school I teach in are now being taught how to use citation generators like Noodlebib, Easybib, and Knight Cite to create bibliographies and citations. The world has completely changed since I began teaching students how to do research. I am just learning about these sites now. I looked at Easybib which offers a free trial, and although it will use the Chicago Style, it looks like you have to purchase a subscription for anything but MLA. I just want you to know that these generators exist. EasyBib: MyBib Pro information

I will have to ask my nephews who are in high school if they are doing this. I don't think one of them knew about APA.
