| Need to Vent.... Any students out there feel my pain. I HATE GROUP WORK!!!!!!! Ok I know that in the workplace you don't always get to pick who you work with, I know that the world is full of slackers, and I know that you need to be able to work with them, even if you are a control freak keener . BUT STILL. In the work place four lazy people who have missed 3 deadlines in a row would be FIRED!!!!!!! The worst part is the BF is one of THEM! I really just don't get it, we've worked together and that's where we met, for four years. He's just decided that this is his last semester and he doesn't care, thus my drive to get 90s is driving him nutts. I really can't stand how our business school (Dalhousie University Commerce Program) thinks that every single thing we do requires us to be in a group. There are jobs out there where you need to work individually too!!!!! Ok that was therapeutic. I'm going to go take my dog for a walk and try to calm down. I'm stressed and I don't think the professor wants to let me switch groups, and we're not even half way done all of the assignments.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | One of my employees did his MBA last year and his program was all group work, too. They had a slacker and went to the professor with a case for firing her. The professor agreed and the slacker had to do all the group work by herself. |

| Yeah my prof said I have to give it one more try and then he may consider allowing me to leave the group. It's a real shame, but the group has been a mess since day one. They are all satisfied with 60s and I'm barely satisfied with 90s. So its really not a good mix. I passed yesterday's case in 5 minutes before it was due, because everyone was supposed to proof our work, and no one did, so I ended up discovering a huge amount of mistakes and had to rewrite it. luckily the bf helped a bit, but made it clear he really doesn't care about the course and doesn't want to do this every week with me. (Sounds like fun eh?)

| Group projects are good for only one thing: allowing the underachievers to consistently screw the overachievers GPA. Hate them.... |

| That is exactly how I feel right now. This is my second last semester and I'm trying to get into law school. My GPA is close and if I don't get A's in all my classes this semester I'm not going to get in to all of my choices...

| I just now saw this! I can relate to what you are feeling. I had to do a group project for a Psych class last term. I would have preferred to do a project by myself. First of all, it is a distance learning class, so I only met the group one time in person at the class orientation on campus. So trying to communicate online, submit information, and pull it all together was frustrating. Fortunately, two other group members were dedicated to it, but a few others were not. Our professor did want to know who did what for grading, and I was not afraid to let her know who did not pull their weight!

| Well the prof still hasn't let me out of this group, and now I'm stuck doing a 10+ page case study on my own, during my spring break, and the stupid paper is only worth 5%. I wish 5% wasn't so vital to my GPA, I'd just tell them I submitted it, and submit a blank paper that says "my group failed to send me their parts here is what I received" and have a page each with a title on the top. It's not like I can even do my part, because we all agreed, that I'd take their parts and turn it into something worth grades. I don't know how I can do that if I don't have anything. I'm really upset right now, especially seeing my bf is one of the ones being such a lazy, ignorant, @$!. I'm also really scared cause the prof said he'll only let me out if the group will give me written permission to leave. I feel like they are ignorant enough to not do it. I've got puppy class with Harley in a few hours and I'm in no mood to train. I'm just so angry that I'm stuck doing this on my spring break when I have a ton of my own work to do, AND they're all doing NOTHING. All I wanted for spring break was some time to train my dog. I don't want to go home, I don't want to go down south, I just want to be caught up on work. I'm sorry for the complaining, I probably sound like a brat, but I'm stressed out and don't know who to talk to, all my friends are gone for the break, and the bf is still sleeping. I just don't know what to do with myself, this is my worst subject I don't understand it well enough to do the whole thing by myself. This wasn't even supposed to be my group, something went wrong and I ended up with all the leftovers who didn't have a group. The only person I agreed to work with was my bf, cause we usually work well together. I'm mad enough that I want to drop the course, take a "withdrawn" on my transcript and say the "$500" tuition isn't worth the headache. But then I'd have to do the whole darn course over again.

| I despised group projects when I was a student and felt it was so unfair that everyone received the same grade. I once had a group project for an online class, ???? We had never met and were spread out over East and Middle Tennessee. With that being said, I have my students in 5th grade work in groups occasioanlly because this is a skill many kids need serious development in. BUT, I do not give grades for group work and almost always assign roles for each student to carry out. I know 5th grade is not college, but I would have felt much better about my group assignments had my grade been based on my work. You certainly do not sound like a brat so rant away! |

| I too HATE group work!!!! I have one last presentation to work on with them. We are all on an online program which in itself makes things difficult, but one member is really pi**ing me off today. UGGGGHHH... Feel slightly better now, I know you guys would understand

I think group work often allows the underachievers to get the good grades due to the overachievers work. Sometime the grade is lower to the lowest students effort but often the highest student will tip the balance to their level to make sure their grade does not suffer. I teach in a Middle School.. I hate assigning group work projects to my students because I will see one student do all the work, or one student who is aggressive want everything their way and not let other student do work. I do food labs, so that has to be a group assignment. If I see one student not doing their part I will adjust the grade for that student. Group work is great on "paper", but it is often unfair, life is often unfair. It is a skill that students need to develop, but the teacher must be observant to monitor the activity. To OP.. I really think your professor should listen to you. Try to talk to him/her again. Good luck

So yeah, I'm still cranky. One group member just apologized to me, but at the same time he still hasn't contributed. I'll feel a lot better when I get this all done tonight and can hopefully move to a new group.
