Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Hunger. Have you ever been so hungry that you have passed out? I ask because I used to have 'black outs' frequently when I was younger and this was put down to skipping breakfast. It would always happen the same way, I would have a head ache, then my eyes would go all blurry so I couldn't see, then I would black out and feel very sick afterwards. Since then I always make sure I have breakfast. But today my alarm didn't go off for work and I woke at 8.30am (I start work at 9.00am) so I had to quickly rush about getting a shower and getting ready for work. I didn't even have time to make Poppy's breakfast or let her out so my mum had to do it. I work 9-5 and half way through my shift I started to feel really sick and had a headache, I remembered I hadn't eaten breakfast this morning so went to have my lunch. While waiting for my sandwich to cook my eyes went all blurry and I couldn't see, I felt really dizzy like I was about to pass out. I quickly took my sandwich and ate my lunch outside to get some fresh air. My eyes quickly returned to normal but now I feel like im going to throw up. I only have around 2 hours of my shift left so I don't want to ask to go home, but I feel like crap. And I have left my purse at home so I can't even get anything else from the canteen. It makes me wonder how some poor people who cannot afford to eat every day feel. Does everyone's body react this way when hungry? It must be terrible for them. Have you had a similar experience when hungry? and is it normal for your body to react this way? I don't know anyone else who has had this sort of experience when only being hungry for a few hours. I will be making sure my alarm goes off tomorrow morning so I get a chance to eat breakfast!

| Hi Rachel, the feelings you get when you don't eat is from hypoglycemia. Some people are very susceptible to it. Most people just feel hungry, tired, or grumpy but a few people do actually pass out when their blood sugar gets so low. My grandfather used to do this and carried peanut butter crackers with him just in case it started. Since you know it's a problem you might want to make sure to drink some milk or have a snack with peanut butter right before bed to tide you over and always make sure you eat breakfast. You could even but some packaged peanut butter crackers, granola bars or breakfast bars to have on hand that you can eat in the car on the way to work if you miss breakfast again. Teresa (RN) |

Is hypoglycemia what pups suffer from when their blood sugar is low? Wow it makes me feel really ill I couldn't imagine how it would feel for a tiny pup!

| It's very interesting. I think Teresa explained it very well. My bad habit is skipping breakfast everyday. I'm trying to fix that, and carry or have a little box of breakfast bars in my desk in case I forget. I have had work days where I skip breakfast, and get so overwhelmed with work that I skip lunch too. I get so grumpy! But after a while I don't feel hungry anymore. It's strange.

| I get this way too if I don't eat or drink for awhile. I passed out LOTS when I was growing up. The most embarassing was when it happened in college in a chemistry lab, and 911 was called and I was taken away in an ambulance! I was the talk of the class and being such a shy person, it was really hard for me to go back. I make sure to always have my purse stocked with granola bars, or almonds, or something to snack on. I eat a little something between every meal too and it helps a lot. I don't get the faint feelings much at all anymore. It also happens to me if I'm standing up in one spot for too long, so I make sure if I'm at a meeting or something that I can always get there early enough to get a chair. My doctor explained to me that I just have a very touchy system... if my blood sugar gets a little low or I get too hot or anything gets out of the "comfort zone", my body doesn't know what to do and just wants to shut down so my blood pressure drops and I pass out.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Yeah I didn't think it was normal as I have never met anyone before who goes through the same thing. When I was younger and passing out a lot I went to hospital and they told me I was anemic and prescribed iron tablets, but they didnt really work for me.

My first one happened when I was 6, and we were doing our dress rehearsal for the school Christmas concert. Everyone was on stage singing and I started to feel nauseous and then I passed out. A girl behind me caught me, thought I was dead, and dropped me! Luckily it wasn't the REAL performance day, but still lots of parents were there watching!

| My son also got hypoglycemic in high school when he was growing very quickly. I think he only got close to passing out a few times but even if he ate all his meals he would get hypoglycemic after school if he didn't get a snack (I guess the school lunches didn't have enough calories for a growing teenage boy). I haven't read any studies but most people who I've talked to who get hypoglycemic are tall and slim with higher metobolisms. (my son and grandfather certainly were). Yes, hypoglycemia is what Yorkie puppies can get if they don't eat enough to fuel their bodies. Yes - it can cause them to feel ill, tired, and then eventually not hungry any longer (all the while their blood sugar falls further). It's a cycle that can be hard to stop - no eating -hypoglycemia - tired - no eating - hypoglycemia to the point of coma, seizures, and/or death. It's so very important to make sure puppies are eating so this doesn't happen because they can't tell us they feel bad until we see signs of it. Teresa |

| Hypoglycemia is the flip side of diabetes, studies now indicate a large percentage of those with hypoglycemia later develop Type II Diabetes, so get the hypoglycemia under control now...they usually suggest treating yourself like a diabetic and eat similar to how a diabetic must eat. Yes, spoken from experience.

| Definitely have a physical done by an internist. Be sure to stay hydrated, preferably with water. Depending on your other symptoms, you may also want to have your thyroid checked.

| Sounds good. Stay hydrated too. Helps with iron poor blood, circulation, and hunger pains.
