| Local news story w/ a happy ending. Lucky Buck, abandoned dog, rescued by original family By ZACH LINT, T-R Staff Writer The dog that trick-or-treaters discovered abandoned at 1196 12th St. NW, New Philadelphia, last week has a new leash on life. Buck, the 2-year-old hound-Labrador retriever mix, lay in the Tuscarawas County Dog Pound last Thursday as dog wardens who thought he was dying searched his immunization records from the rabies tag attached to his collar. “The dog pound called our house because Buck still had his rabies tag from when we got him his shots,” Lori Miller said. “The pound thought he had mange, but really he scratched his fur off because he has allergies and is supposed to get a shot once a month.” Lori and Richard Miller were forced to give Buck away when they moved into their W. Slingluff Ave., Dover, home because their new landlord didn’t allow dogs. Richard said they reluctantly gave him to a family friend who then gave Buck to a couple from Winesburg about a year ago. Somewhere along the line, Buck got new owners, but the Millers can’t trace how he ended up with Billy and Ruth Robinson, now of 423 Cedar Ln. NW, New Philadelphia. Richard was warned before he went to the pound that Buck was not in good shape. The dog was lying down, wouldn’t move, wouldn’t eat or drink and would probably need to be euthanized, he was told. “When I showed up and hollered his name I had tears in my eyes and my heart came clear up to my throat,” he said. “I crawled right in the cage and sat down and rubbed him and told him I loved him and he perked right up. Everybody was floored.” Buck’s new-found enthusiasm bought him an extra day at the pound and a few new friends as the Millers found out that Dog Warden Terry Warner’s friend was also their landlord. “My husband had them all tearing up,” Lori said. “They asked who we were renting from, and we told them Dana and Linda Mallernee and the dog warden said he’d make a few calls.” One day later Buck was back with his old family. Lori said she took a small advance earlier this week to pay for the $138 veterinarian’s bill for the first of several visits Buck will require. “My 7-year-old son won the Halloween costume contest at Wal-Mart,” Lori said. “He told me Buck could have the gift card he won for what he needs.” The Millers said that Buck shows signs he was mistreated, mostly backing away from closet doors when they are opened and other little things he never used to do. “To have it come around like this,” Richard said. “It knocked me back. He’s a big harmless oaf, he even gets along with our cat. I love animals and I can’t even imagine...” The Robinsons are to appear Thursday in New Philadelphia Municipal Court to face charges of animal neglect, cruelty and abandonment. Buck will likely be lying on the living room floor awaiting the return of the Miller family, who plan to attend the hearing and show the judge pictures of their beloved pet.
