Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Worried about a mole on my leg... Im a little worried about a new mole which has appeared on my calf. I've had it around 6-8 months now. It's gotten larger and is quite raised and feels very dry... What are the signs of a mole turning malignant? Should I be worried...?? I used to use tanning beds a lot a few years ago and have only just started using them again a couple of months ago.

| I think you should see a Dermatologist.

| I agree, you should have it checked. I have had about 15 moles removed, and still have about 7-10 more that need to come off. I have one that is visible on my shoulder when I wear a tank top. I get a lot of comments on how bad it looks. Strangely enough, that is not one that my dermatologist is concerned about. Go figure. Some of mine do get dry in the winter time and itch a little, but if it is a new one, you should have it looked at. I have also been told to take pictures of them on a regular basis and check for changes because they are on my back where I can't see them. My dermatologist tells me I am a high risk skin cancer candidate, but I have always been careful about over exposure to the sun.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | I know.. Im just scared to hear what they might say. I would need to make an appointment to see my GP first then he would have to refer me to the melanoma clinic. Do you know the signs?

Sudden changes to a present mole (a new one is a sudden change) irregular pattern like jagged edges, one that is partially raised or blistered, and there are specific colors like a black spot in the center, a red halo around them, oozing, or bleeding are all reasons to see a dermatologist.

| It sounds like actinic keratoses to me, but you really should have it checked by a dermatologist. The sooner the better. Melanoma is in most cases considered cured if caught and removed early. Please make sure your derm does and excision, not a scrape biopsy and make sure the slides are read by a dermapathologist. You can find a very active community online here: Mpip.org/bb Good luck! I'm sure it will turn out to be nothing. |

I think I will have to make an appointment just to put my mind at rest about the situation... I keep putting it off because Im frightened about what they will say, plus people keep telling me that they get new moles all the time and that they are nothing. But im not so sure, Ive never had this before...

I supose I really should have someone take a look at it though just to make sure. It does hurt when it is rubbed too...

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Rachael, Rachael, Rachael! Would you put off a visit to the vet if Poppy had a growth of some kind? Have it checked out by a dermatologist and set your fears to rest. I get bizarre looking keratoses all the time but I have my doctor check them out at every appointment because I was unsuccessful but persistent at trying to tan when a teenager. And you know the doctor is going to tell you to lay off the tanning beds. I understand the desire to have a healthy-looking tan because my skin color has been compared to fish bellies -- but it's not worth the risk, not to mention the wierd blotches you will get as you age. |
