| Terribly sad: stray dog hit by car I was running errands this morning and saw an adorable stray dog trotting around in traffic on a 4-lane, divided road with a speed limit of 45 mph. The dog was a black poodle mix under 20 pounds, probably quite young. He made it across all 4 lanes and to a sidewalk. Traffic had stopped. I pulled over, got out of the car and made my way to the dog. Before I could reach him, he bolted back into the street. Traffic was still stopped. I breathed a sigh of relief when he neared the other side. At the last second, a woman driving a van went around stopped cars and hit the poor dog and took off. It was the most horrific sound. Everyone watching screamed. I completely forgot about my own safety and ran across the street. I cradled the dog in my arms and could feel his heart beating, but I knew he had extensive head injuries. The tears were flowing down my cheeks as I stroked his soft hair and said over and over, "I'm so sorry baby." A man agreed to drive the dog to the nearest vet office, my former vet. I'll skip what happened there and simply say that I am glad that this person is my former vet. The little black dog was put to sleep. No collar or tags, no microchip. I am sick to my stomach and still crying. |

| It's just too sad for you to have experienced that terrible sight. You did all you could to try to help, more than most people would do unfortunately. My tears are for the little one. |

| Thats so sad. May that little one RIP. Its also very sad that the woman either didn't care enough or was too darn busy to stop and help the dog she hit. Maybe if she was in less of a hurry to go around the cars, then that poor dog might still be alive. Your a good soul for trying to help.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You have a great heart. Most people not only don't stop for loose dogs, but definitely won't for injured babies...and it's just heartbreaking. With your help, this sweet creature did not have to suffer - and may he RIP. Oddly, I was running errands this morning and I too saw a dog on the side of the road - except he was dead and already stiff. Black, fluffy fur...like a black chow mix. I get so choked up whenever I see an animal on the side of a road, and I feel so horrible.

| Thank you everyone for your comments. I have profound respect for the good people in animal-related jobs and volunteer work who have to deal with tragedy on a regular basis. Rest in peace little doggy. |
