Donating YT 7000 Club Member | American Sign Language Does anyone sign? It is something I have always wished I could do. I was born deaf and the doctors were able to (mostly) restore my hearing, and for this reason I've always felt a very special connection to people with hearing disabilities. I would love to be able to communicate with them. Does anyone know where I could find an ASL class? My school doesn't offer anything and neither does my community (that I can find). I've been picking up some things on the internet, but I'd much rather have a class setting with an instructor.

| When my son was born they told me that he probably would not speak, and so I took ASL at the local college and started teaching him at about 5 months old. By the time he turned 2 he had almost 200 signs in his vocabulary. Special needs children, like my son, are especially suitable for ASL, as speech is one of the toughest skills to acquire. I admire your tenacity to learn this language. I unfortunately only know of schools in the MD/DC area that teach classes in ASL, or are classes taught using ASL. Just an interesting tidbit: the professor who taught me ASL was deaf and mute, and only signed! It gave all in the class a new perspective on learning. She was truly a remarkable woman. Good luck in your search. |

| If you can't find anything else, see if there are any people in your community who sign. Back when I was in 5th (?) grade, one of my teachers knew sign language and offered her students to come in before school to learn. Given it was basic signs, but it was helpful at the time. I really don't remember anything as I didn't keep up with it, but it may be an avenue for you. A lot of communities also have people that sign their pledge of allegiance and town meetings...maybe ask them? |

| Megan - just one more reason you are such a special young lady !!!!! I also think you can look at your local community college to see if you can get into a class now before you start as a fulltime college student.
