| I can't believe I did this picking up poop!! So Rocco was inside the house after his poop on Thursday morning, and I went back out to pick it up off the lawn. The lawn was still wet from heavy rain the night before, and as I turned (with poop in tissue), I slipped and fell on the slight hill I was on. I heard a loud POP from my ankle, and I could barely drag myself into the house. It's not broken, but it's badly sprained, I cannot walk on it and have an air cast and crutches for a few weeks. UGHH!!! I feel so stupid. Has anyone had a bad sprained ankle before? If so, how long before you can walk on it? I really don't have time for this... (Oh, and if anyone's wondering, the poop was intact on my landing )

| My daughter was a gymnast. When she was 17 she did some tumbling run and landed funny. The whole gym heard this POP and I thought for sure she broke her ankle. I took her to the emergancy room and the ankle was x-rayed. Turned out it was a bad sprain. It healed after a few weeks but she found after that the ankle would roll easily and she would resprain it. I finally took her to an orthopedic surgeon and found out that the POP sound we heard were a ligament and tendon tearing off the bone. She had to have the ankle reconstructed. The surgeon said she would have been better off breaking the ankle than damaging the ligaments and tendons.

| My daughter is 36 now and never had any problem with the ankle after it was fixed. I guess tendon and ligament injuries don't show up in x-rays. I would let the ankle heal and then go from there. Ankles are suppose to be tight and not have much side to side movement. When she went to the surgeon he moved that ankle so far to the right and then as far back to the left. I thought he was going to spin it around. There was no doubt that the ankle definately was not stable and had to be fixed.

I strongly encourage you to seek out a Ortho to check out your ankle! Sorry you are hurting and hope it's only a sprain!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Sorry to hear about your unfortunate fall. A few years back, I landed on my ankle wrong and heard three pops. It swelled tremendously and turned every color in the rainbow. It was not broken, but it was put in a cast. The ankle is still a little weak other wise it is fine. The hospital should have at least referred you to the ortho on call, but if they are like our hospital, you are better off reading the Xray youself LOL. I would schedule an appointment, just to be on the safe side. I hope you feel better soon, and please, keep us updated. P.S. I am glad the poop stayed contained and didn't add insult to injury . |

| Ouch, I feel your pain. I've had a broken bone and a sprain (not at the same time) and I'll take broken bones any day of the week. I sprained my ankle 15 years ago and still today, if I step wrong on it it'll roll and the pain is so bad it'll put me on the floor. When the sprain happened I was a very broke college student with no insurance so no way to get it treated, which I regret to this day. I'd definitely recommend getting a referral to an ortho. |

| I definitely would get it re-xrayed in a 1-2 weeks. I agree with the above posts. The 'pop' you heard was probably the ligament tearing from the bone. It is called an avulsion fracture. There isn't much you do for it and it is usually treated like a sprain but I would follow up with your primary care doctor in a week or so. When I see patients in the ER, I have them take Ibuprofen for 5-7 days, ice, rest, elevate, and pain pills if needed. I always have my patients follow up with their doctor for further evaluation and possible referral to ortho. You will probably always have problems with that ankle because now it is fragile. If it is swollen on the inside of your ankle, you hurt your deltoid ligament. If it is swollen and painful on the outside of your ankle which is most common, it is probably your anterior talofibular ligament. Just be sure and stay off of it for a couple of weeks and ice, ice, ice! Good luck!

I've never had a bad ankle injury but I did explode the tendons and ligaments in my middle finger on my left hand my senior year of high school, that was two years ago it swelled three-four times it's normal size within 14 hours and I didn't take my ring on that finger off wich was excruciatingly painful digging into my finger my finger pretty much swelled around it but I didn't wanna ruin my ring and it turned black blue green orange and other various colors in that short time. I never went to see the specialist my doctor recommended for surgery and my finger still is not right just a short time ago I considered it an accomplishment to be able to make a complete fist without that finger popping up or unable to go down all the way, the pain today still sucks and cracking that knuckle is a no no. So I would recommend seeing someone just in case. better safe then sorry

| I would make an appt with an orthopedic surgeon right away. They can't see ligaments on x-rays. They say oh it's not broken have a nice day. You definatly have to follow up with a doctor. Good luck

| As usual, great advice on YT and this isn't even about my Yorkie! Thanks to all of you and I will definitely be following up with an ortho Dr. very soon. Still can't walk on it, but it really is a lovely shade of green/blue/yellow .

| Exactly! As soon as they found no broken bone, I was out of there in 5 minutes with barely any words/instructions given to me.
