I need your advice!!!!! Pleaseeee Ok so I graduated last year with a degree in mass communication (tv/radio) and the only thing that I have been able to find is a part time job at a radio station paying me $500 a month ($250 every 2 weeks)! Now it pisses me off that I spent $80,000 for a college degree and this is all I have been able to find. On top of that you cannot even move up on the job. Everyone gets paid the same thing no matter how long they been there or how new they are. Now before I got the job I started going to school to do hair since I was not finding any job in my major. Now i'm thinking of going back since i'm not finding a good job. If I go back I will have to quit the job because they cross each others time. So if you was me would you quit the job hoping to find another job or go back to hair school to work in a salon and open a hair salon one day? Im trying to get out my parents house and get a car!!!

| Do you think you will gain valuable experience at the radio station that will help you find a better job?

I know it might be a hard pill to swallow, spending that much on your degree only to find a low paying job. But, I would think in this field, just like other careers you don't start at the top, you work your way up. Maybe you could take on another part time job while working this one, also while looking for a more lucrative position elsewhere?

I'm in the same boat as you are. I graduated with a degree in History last June and I cannot find anything permanent or worth my time. I have experience working in the classroom yet I can't get hired for anything that isn't temporary. I even led my own class of 25 kids in an after school program with tons of responsibility and only get paid $800 a month. It made me so mad that at every weekly staff meeting we were tossed 2 more new responsibilities. By the time I left, I had the same workload as a certified teacher, lesson plans and everything!!!! I dream of the day that I find something more permanent, with a decent wage that will get Kaji and I out of my parents house again (we moved back in in Jan) where he has a backyard and I can go back and get my credentials or something. I have a part time now, tutoring kids for $17.50 and hour but I have yet to see my February paycheck. I feel lost and stressed.

Personally if it were me I would continue to look for work in TV/ radio even if it meant looking for work overseas. You have all that education and it would be just like throwing your dreams away. I know the economy in the US is in rough shape and the unemployment numbers are staggering, but would still try to get hired somewhere where you have a hope in advancing your career.Best wishes!

I feel for you. I graduated with my masters degree in 1983, and the economy was in a bad slump--similar to today. There were NO JOBS out there. I was able to get some part time work, and it did make my resume look better when the job market improved. I know it is a bummer to pay a lot for an education and not be able to use it right off the bat. But in reality, most people end up in careers that are not directly related to their college major. But take a larger view: your college experience taught you how to think logically, how to write, how to communicate, how plan and complete projects. It was really a lot more than your selected course of study. My advice is to find a mentor in the field you wish to break into. Offer to work for free if that is the only way in. (Believe it or not, I tried this, and there were no takers. But I think the world is different now). Alternatively, you could take a job that is not in your field of study, but needs similar skills. When an opening comes up in your field, you would be ready to jump on it. There really is no good advice here. You are in a difficult situation, and I remember it well.

Another thought....in times like these where there is nothing in the job market to get excited about, GO ON AN ADVENTURE! Have you considered the Peace Corps??? It is a huge plus on your resume.
