| Math People...In Here Please Solve using the elimination method: 4u - 3v = 1 3u + 4v = 6 Find u and v. I have the answer with solution manual, but they want you to start at a certain point and only explain it if you pick their number to start at (if I didn't have the manual, I wouldn't know where they wanted me to start...). So, I multiplied the top of 4 to get: 16u -12v = 4 and the bottom by 3 to get: 9u + 12v = 18 Now we get: 25u + 0v = 22 25u = 22 u = 22/25 Now substituting 22/25 in for u in the first equation, we get: 4(22/25) - 3v = 1 4 x 22/25 = 88/100 or 22/25 22/25 - 3v = 1 -3v = 1 22/25 Dividing by -3v, we get: v = 1 22/25 divided by -3 Changing 1 22/25 to an improper fraction: 47/25 divided by 3 When dividing fractions, don't ask why, just flip the sucker and multiply: 47/25 x 1/3 = 47/75 Or in case I flipped the wrong one : 25/47 x 3/1 = 75/47 The book is saying my value for u is correct, but not v. What in the heck am I doing wrong???

Senior Yorkie Talker | 4u-3v=1 3u+4v=6 4(4u-3v=1) 3(3u+4v=6) 16u-12v=4 + 9u+12v=18 the -12v and +12v cancel and youre left with 25u = 22 u = 22/25 plug u into the first eq (4u-3v=1) to get v to check you can plug in both values to see if they equal 1 or 6 i hope im doing it right.. its been forever.

Senior Yorkie Talker | oh i think i know where you went wrong... 22/25 x 4 isnt 88/100... its 88/25 its easier if you look at decimals than fractions. so 22/25 is 0.88 and 4 x 0.88 is 3.52 3.52-3v=1 solve for v

3.52 - 3v = 1 -3v = -2.52 v- -2.52 divided by -3 v = .84 or 84/100 or 21/25 YAY! Thank you

| Thanks everyone. This book uses fractions, not decimals. So I have to convert back to fractions for my answer.

| This problem is from an intermediate algebra book (lowest non-remedial algebra class offered at some colleges).
