Default Did anyone move out of state away from home?

I'm currently in community college right now, not 100% sure of what I want to be. But I figure getting a college degree is a good thing!

Here's my thing... I would like to move out of state. I currently live in Maryland, as does all of my family, so it would be tough but I really want to. I'm fairly close to all of my family and we have decent relationships. My family all have the biggest, kindest hearts in the entire world but well... you can say they're all a little messed up! (What family isn't it, though?) They're big partyers, some into drugs, a lot of drinking, a lot of stuff. I'm a pretty mature 19 year old (and I mean that in the least cocky way possible) and I've just never been into what other 19 year olds are into. I've honestly never done drugs, I'm not into drinking, I don't smoke. And I just need a change and to get away from everyone elses problems.

My little 6 year old brother passed away in 2006 and it's basically torn up this family a lot. Obviously. It's been really rough. He was my everything. But I feel like I'm at that point in my life where I really need to move on and begin my OWN life. But I'm not gonna lie - it scares the sh*t out of me at the same time.

Currently, I'm looking into South Carolina. I've visited there now about 4 times. Mostly the Bluffton/Beaufort area but also Charleston and a few other areas. I just love it. I love the whole vibe there. I could see myself living there and was considering trying to get into a college there after completing my Associates degree here in Maryland.

I mean, I'm the kind of person who adjusts easily. I started at a brand new high school my freshmen year in another town (in Maryland) and made friends. Then my junior year I moved back in with my mom and completed the last two years of high school at another new school.

So, my original question, who moved away from their hometown and everything they've known and would you do it again? Do you regret it or was it a good thing?

Also, who lives in South Carolina and can tell me maybe a little more about it? I know it's not the greatest place to find a job but where is now a days? Do you enjoy living there?

Sorry to make this semi-long post on a Yorkie forum but I just wanted opinions.

Six months after I graduated High School I moved to Germany for four years while my ex-husband was in the Army. I have always been an independant person so I don't know if that helped or not. I loved living in Germany but I still missed everyone being THAT far away. When we moved back home we moved back around our family more out of the fact we had nowhere else to go at the time. I would like to live about 2-3 hours away from family members. That's close enough to visit but far enough away that there is some space. lol

If I were young and without kids I would move away. Right now it looks like I won't get any further away than we are. (The in-laws live across the road and my parents are about a 8 minute drive.) Your young... I say go for it. You will either love it or hate it. The good news is if you hate it you can always move back.

i am sorry to hear about the loss of your little brother something like that can really tear a family up and i am happy to hear you are handling it the best anyone could

to answer your original question, yes i have moved away from home. i was born and raised in michigan and went to college there as well. my family is a little dysfunctional as well lol and i felt they never really wanted me to grow up. i could never make any decisions without getting a lecture from them on how i was doing everything wrong . well i got divorced and just needed a fresh start. i made the decision to move to either texas or north carolina (had never been to NC before and had only visited houston once when i was really young LOL) because i thought those places sounded nice. within 2 weeks of making that decision, my best friend and i (he is now my fiance!) had packed up and totally moved 1200 miles away. oh and BTW, i had no job and did not know a single person in plano, texas which is where i moved. my friends and family were pretty shocked

i have NEVER regretted moving away. i found a great job here and love living away from home. i get to make my own decisions and do not need "permission" to do anything. i bought a house all on my own, bought a car, etc and made good decisions!

you are very mature for your age. i made the move when i was 28. i think you would be very happy being on your own and making your own way. good luck in whatever you choose

I moved away from home when I was 21, but I was married and not alone. I have never regretted it. I also live in South Carolina and I highly recommend it The first time I ever visited Greenville, SC, I told my husband, I love it there and I hope we get to live there some day. 8 yrs later he was offered a job here, and we've been here for 21 years (yes I am old LOL). I've never lived in Charleston as an adult (I lived there when I was 2 ), but my husband has had some long term jobs there. And I LOVE visiting there.

I would suggest that you give Greenville a chance. It is an awesome place for young adults. It has a great downtown area, and it is very pet friendly! I take Bonnie down there often. In fact we are going downtown tonight for supper (without Bonnie this time!). My oldest is in from out of town, and we have to make a trip downtown everytime he comes home! You'll have to look at the link below and see what you think! (Let me know if you decided to visit, I have a 21 yr son that we might could talk into showing you around town )

Greenville's Downtown

If you want more information regarding Charleston, you may want to send a PM to passionfruition (Val). She is a member here, although I don't think is online very often, but she lives in the Charleston area and would probably be a good one to get information from.

You sound like a very mature young lady, and it sounds like a good decision for you to move away from your family. Your family is always your family, and you will always have a relationship with them, but sometimes it is good not to live right up under them.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding Greenville.

Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulder. Humm, SC?? I love SC and would never go back up north for nothing..Come on down!
I moved away from home(of course it was because of hubbys job), but, as much as I missed my family, it was the best thing I ever could have done

Hi, I moved from Michigan to Louisville Ky, to Dallas and finally landing in Atlanta. This all started 15 years ago and I can honestly tell you I do not regret it at all.

The first year was really hard but after that year it has all been good. I think it really made me much stronger.

Good luck.

I grew up in an Army family always moving around but eventually setlled in Texas where the majority of my extended and immediate family lives. Got married after my first year of college and moved to Georgia from Texas with my husband who had joined the Air Force. I gotta tell you it was ROUGH for me. Me, my mom, sister, and grandma are all REALLY close so being away from them and not being able to go over and see them anytime I wanted was hard. I had to make new freinds, find new contacts, explore a new town and figure out where everthing was. It honestly took me a few months to a year to become adjusted to Georgia. I only get to see my family every few months so it is still hard..

However I do think that move made me grow up a little and I became alot more independent. Especially after my husband deployed and I was completely alone here. Growing up I was a "daddy's girl" and was so used to being taken care of. My mom and dad did everything for me. Made my doctors appts, paid for my school, bought me a car, did my laundry.. all of that work that I had to learn to do when we moved. All my jobs were given to me because of people I knew in my old town and when I moved I had to actually go out and apply places. It sounds like you are a bit more mature than me though

If I could I would move back to Texas in a heart beat but no I wouldnt go back and change anything. I do enjoy Georgia and the friends I've made. I feel 1000 times more grown up than alot of people I know and Im only 20.

Well, I have a mature side but when it comes to the stuff you're talking about (parents paying for school, doing laundry, etc...) I'm pretty much in the same boat lol. So it would be really hard for me to learn how to cook for myself and do things of that nature. That's kind of why I want to move too -to prove to myself I CAN do it, lol .

Thanks for all of your responses, guys!

It sounds like SC is a good choice too. Something just calls me there every time I go! I'll have to check out Greenville.

Also, I wouldn't be totally alone. I have (sort of) family there. This woman Pat and her husband, Bill. They're basically family to me, sort of second grandparents type deal. She babysat solely me from the age of 3 months until 10 or so years old. And I still am close to their whole family and they just made the move from MD to SC and love it. They're the reason I've been down there visiting a few times and fell in love with the whole vibe there. They live in Bluffton so I'd like to be semi-close to them. Charleston is about 2 hours away from them but that would work for me. I also have a friend who wants to move there with me so we would probably rent a place together! And yes, pet friendly towns are important to me! lol. Actually, I would love to get another dog to add to my clan if I moved. I'm still living at home and it just... wouldn't be allowed right now, lol. They have a dog as well.

I moved 5 hours away from VA when I graduated from high school. I went from a tiny small town to a very large city. I've been here since early 2005 and it's the best thing I've done for myself. No regrets at all!

I say, follow your heart. My son did that. He moved from PA to L.Vegas for his job. He didn't know anyone out there at the time. He loves it out there and is very happy. I wish you luck.

I went to undergrad about 3 hours away from my totally kooky family and it was great. It was just like someone said close enough to visit but far enough away to keep away the idiots. However, then after undergrad I decided to go to grad school in TEXAS! So we moved to Fort Worth. Six hours proved to be a bit more troubling. We only stayed a year but it was a great experience and I learned alot about myself. The main thing I learned is that no matter what... I can take care of myself. It also turns out that absence does make the heart grow fonder plus I REALLY missed my mom, my cousin (lil sister), and my grandma. I have a whole new picture of my family now. It's much easier to see their flaws as a part of them and not the whole of them. It's much easier to spend time with all of them now because of it.

With all I know now, I would definitely do it again just for the experience.

I moved from a small little town to virgina to be with a guy that I fell head over heels in love with. Didnt no a single soul when I moved except for him. Didnt no what it was like to live in a "city" untill then, but I LOVED it. I loved the warmer weather, I loved the people and I loved the area. I hated the long trip back home to visit but it was so nice to see everyone when I did. (does that make sense lol) I lived there for about 2 years. I got pregnant 3 months after moving down there, so after my daughter was born and we would come home to visit she would scream non stop when she saw my family. I felt so bad, that she wasnt growing up around family. So when she was almost 2 years old we packed up and moved back home and have been here since. She is 11 now. It was a great expierence and I dont regret it one bit and sometimes when there is 8 feet of snow on the ground, I kick myself for moving back in the first place. ...
Anyways, I think you should do it!! You could always move back..
