| Daily Salt Intake? [B] Can anyone tell me what a healthy daily salt intake should be? I recently became a vegetarian and I've been using a lot of the "convenience" foods such as Garden Burger Portabella (Which I love) but the salt intake is 380 milagrams. Some of the stuff is 750 milagrams of salt. I started reading lables more because I noticed that I felt bloated and was a few pounds heavier. Thanks. Elaine B] |

| I just went and looked through my notes from a Human Nutrition course that I took last semester. For adults aged 19-50 years, recommended sodium intake is 1300mg, but anything under 2300mg is considered safe. Unfortunately, the average daily intake is at least double that: 3300-6000mg/day!

| I remember reading on this a while back if I remember correctly it was less than a teaspoon that we needed a day....One article said that most of what we get in our diet does not come from the salt shaker it's in the foods we eat...The amount from the shaker was contributing only about 10%-15% of what we get in our daily diet....I was very surprised by this.....

| I read somewhere recently that America eats more salt than any other country. Not surprising since we are the fattest country, have the most heart disease, and eat a lot more fat and meat as well. You would think being the greatest country on earth we would have valued our own bodies and health a little bit more!

| I just looked this up. 1 teaspoon of salt = 2000 mg sodium. I didn't realize one tsp. had so much. I would just do the recommended intake. Don't try to go too low unless you have high blood pressure or other health problems. And make sure you are drinking enough water and getting enough fiber. That will help with the bloating. If you find that the pre-made veggie burgers have too much for you, there's always plenty of recipes you can make yourself. You can make like 12, cook them, and freeze them. So you still have a quick meal.

| You might think of using sea salt, I have used it for years. Also as you said frozen packaged foods are loaded with salt and best to stay away from most. Advantages of Sea Salt
