| Those with skin kids? What do you for their birthdays? Do you go all out and have a big party or do you play it low-key? We used to go all out...30-40 people, food (usually cooked on the grill), cake ice cream, games, prizes, goody bags...the whole shebang. Since the boys are getting older now (oldest will be 13...youngest will be 9 next weekend), we usually do a dinner for them on their actual b'day...just family usually...then the weekend of or after, we let them pick a place they want to go and they invite 1-2 friends. We started this last year and it has been great...I don't have to stress out with the planning and making sure everything is just right ( a bit OCD, I think) and the boys seem to enjoy it more. Not to mention the money we save...parties are EXPENSIVE.

| We do it low-key. They get to decide whats for dinner, and then invite a friend or two over for a sleep over.

| I do a small party. My son is 7. I let him invite 8-10 kids. This year, we ordered pizza and the kids played the Wii. And I do all my cakes homemade. I also put together a small 'treat bag' for the kids to take home. I hardly spent anything on the party, but the kids had a blast! Last year, the kids made their own sundaes. We gave them each a bowl of ice cream and had toppings in different bowls for them to choose. They loved it.

| Ours are mostly grown now, but when they were young we used to take the whole family out for dinner and a movie. That got to be too expensive, since we have 5 children! So now the birthday child goes out with mom & dad to dinner and they go shopping with the money they get for their birthday. We give them a set amount of money and a couple of other relatives do also so they have some cash to get something they'd really like. |

| Ours are grown now too. We always spent the cash on the kids! Hardly ever did parties except for immediate family and one or two friends. In our family we spent more on birthdays than Christmas. So they always looked forward to their day! Thats when they got the wii or big gift. Christmas was low key, and we tried to focus on helping a family that was in need. |

| We do a pool party. She usually has about 10 kids over and 5 or 6 adults. We cook hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill and have birthday cake and stuff. This year we are taking a few of her friends to an indoor waterpark. In the coming yrs we will probably do more of just a coujple friends going somewhere with us. Parties are very expensive and stressful

| My daughter just celebrated her 18th birthday (I can't believe it) last Monday. She had about 10-12 friends over. First they were inside just talking and playing pool I made a chocolate fondue and they loved that. Then they went in the backyard and sat around the firepit and roasted marshmallows and just hung out and talked. I made cupcakes, so when they came in they ate cupcakes, played more pool and just talked. For my little one's birthday, he's 10, we invited just the boys in his class to a bowling party. They had a great time and it wasn't too expensive. Then we had cake at home. It was a great time. I took lots of pictures. I took a picture of each kid with him and put that in the thank you card. It only turned out to be about 9-10 boys so it was great fun. For my 14 year old daughter we did a mall scavenger hunt. I split the groups up into 4 girls, we had 4 groups. I made a list of things they had to find and put in a bag. They all had my cell phone number, and one rule was that they must stay together, no splitting up. My husband and I walkied the mall and if any of them was breaking a rule they would be disqualified. They had to meet me and my husband in the food court at a certain time and we had subway heros and carvel ice cream in the food court it was great fun. On the list I made each team use the $5.00 I put in the bag to buy something, anything for my daughter. Since they all have cell phones I made alot of clues that they had to find about taking a picture in front of a certain store. They also had to take a picture of the stores thats first letter started with all the letters of my daughters name. For instance her name is Deanna so they had to find a store that started with a "d" then a "e" and so on. It was great. Also everytime they passed her in the mall they had to say "Happy Birthday" really loud.

| Well, my daughter says I missed my true calling in life! She says I should have been a party planner! Every year we did the family party - small family, but fun environment. It was the friend party with a different theme each year played up at every element from age 3 to 17 that made birthdays special! She graduated just days before turning 18 - so her graduation party was a big extravaganza & the birthday party was family. I was never good at having her abide by the party rule of: age of the child + one = the number of children invited to the party. My rule was the more the merrier! This was the time to make her queen for the day & to show her friends a great time & treat them to a fun-packed goodie bag & several hours of fun. I was a single mom, living on a very tight budget. But you can ask my dd or her friends and they will remember all the little details of her parties and how much fun was had. I was creative, and worked hard to make it special. I had ideas - and put together these themed parties, and a couple yrs down the road, there would be partyware that would have been perfect - but not nearly as creative as mine - including invitations made from old 45s for a 50s party. Royal scrolls for a princess party. Plain party hats turned into megaphones for a cheerleading party. Or creating an actors slate for a Hollywood party. My biggest expense was my time & that was given with much joy. Starting also when she was 3 - we also hosted a Christmas Tea Party - incredibly fun, and I love to look back at the photos and watch these little girls grow up into young ladies. Also, as the summer drew to a close we would do a End of the Summer Fling - they started simple at age 3 or 4 in the backyard with a wading pool, slip-n-slide, watermelon & games, & grew to include meeting at the beach or my parents pool as they grew older My dd would say some of her happiest memories were these parties - She felt so special, and loved. She also learned how to be a hostess and the joy in entertaining others

As the boys got older we did a cake on their b'day no matter what and let them pick a few friends to go somewhere....they liked the idea better. I had plenty of bowling, ice skating, etc...parties. before that felt they were too old for a party. I am trying to put together a HUGE bash for my daughter's 1st b'day in August. I know its just for pictures for them later, but she didn't have a shower as I only knew I was preg 4 weeks before I had her so I still have family that have not met her. I am thinking of renting a room at a very nice hotel where we did my Mom's b'day Baton Rouge Hotel - Pictures - Baton Rouge, Louisiana - LA - Embassy Suites Hotels They have a heated pool, beautiful court yard both indoors for family and frinds to visit.I have mats for the floor to put in the room and throw toys for the few kids that will be there, but plan to have most people just met us at the Zoo and only certain people come back to the room. My bestfriends from out of town and their girls can stay w/me and Sydney at the room and then we can shop or whatever the next day. Anyway, this is all just an idea right now. Angie | |

Holy crapoli! That's a BIG party!! My family just does a little family party for me and my brother. I'm turning 17 and he's turning 15. Cake and ice cream and pizza usually. At my grandma's house with my mom's side of the family. Not too big. But we all love it! We have little get-togethers all the time. So much fun!

| My daughters ( the youngest) has always been a difficult one, she is 13 and her birthday is December 28th, its an aweful birthday now matter how hard tried to make it GREAT when she was little, people were still doing Christmas events, her friends and sometimes us were away for Christmas vacation, So I had her family party on her bday and then We celebrated her Birthday in the summer, she has had awesome parties, cookouts, sleepovers, and American Girl themed party when she was younger, being a single mom you have to learn to get more bang for your buck and come up with different Ideas. I always planned ahead and wanted her to have a really special birthday, now she just prefers 1 or 2 friends with dinner and a movie or amusement park etc... |
