YT Addict | Diabetes well i have been diagnosed with Type 2, kinda crazy scary all at the same time. my first A1C is 6.4 which is a little above what it should be. i'm on pills for the diabetes and exercising and dieting. i have cut out sodas and starches (whites) i have lost a couple pounds so far. got a meter today, have to wait and find out how much the strips and lancets are for it though, because if they're too much i'm going to look into getting a different meter with cheaper stuff! i'm also taking kidney disease meds (as preventative now) and my dr. wants me to keep my eye exams up to date because of the whole getting glaucoma and cataracts well, thats about it! =] *Happy Sticking* lol thats what the nurse told me today as i left with my meter |

| It is managable I am not a diabetic but as a nurse who has much experience in this area, it is manageable! Most Type II cases are well controlled with diet, and often when a person changes their diet and lifestyle like exercising more, they find that they may not even need medication. Sounds like you are on your way to a good start! Watch your carbs, low fat, and more whole grain. No white flour or sugar! Hang in there, you can do it!

| Sorry to hear about this.....diabetes seems to be at epidemic proportions now.....Thank goodness your a type two that means your pancreas is still functioning ....stick to healthier eating and you might be able to go off your meds.... My husband and son are type ones and their strips run about $40-$45 a box.....I've heard that Walmart has their own brand of meter and strips and they are cheaper and work well....I hope your feeling better soon......

| Your A1C of 6.4 is really pretty good. It sounds like you are doing all the right things! Keep up the good work, do everything you can to prevent complications!

| I have type 2 also. I am managing it with diet and meds. I remember crying when I found out I had it. My grandmother on my mom's side had it and after I was diagnosed, my dad and sister was also diagnose. With both sides of the family, I was not surprised to get it. Soemtimes it's hard especially this time of year with all the candy and desserts, but you'll manage.

| An HBA1C of 6.4 isn't too bad. In fact, the recommended reading for DM2 is below a 7. You just want to keep it around there. A 6 is ideal - so you are doing great! The concern is micro and macrovascular problems that can happen if you aren't under control....cataracts, glaucoma, kidney disease, neuropathy, heart disease. I'm assuming the preventative medicine your doctor put you on was something that ends in -pril (like lisinopril)? That's very good you are on that - the way it works, it will protect your kidney in a place most diabetics have problems, and will help to prevent it from happening. Like the posting before from the nurse - a good diet is key! And if you aren't sure exactly what you should be eating, ask. Doctors tend to give very generic advice , so ask if there is a diabetes class they offer that will help, or ask for a referral to a nutritionist...And exercise, if your doctor says you are okay to exercise - is great for control. Even a little bit of weight loss will help tremendously with sugar control. (And quit smoking if you do...or at least start to think about it - your dr can help you when you decide to quit) It sounds like you are well taken care of - but also make sure you are getting a good diabetic foot exam at least once a year...if not 2 times. And the annual eye exam is important! Make sure your blood pressure and cholesterol levels are also okay - it can make management easier as well. I understand you are worried. It's totally normal to be scared right now, but it sounds like you are on top of it! Keep doing what you are doing - don't skip your medications , and just keep with the diet and exercise - oh, and of course, your dr appointments! This is extremely manageable, but you have to take charge (and it sounds like you are)! |
