Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | If you have carpet, the carpet may need to be pulled up, and the padding under it replaced. Although it may feel dry to the touch, the padding takes weeks to dry if it gets soaked, and it can mildew first. I would try that first. If that doesn't work, you may have to take down your drywall, wipe the studs down with a mixture of 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water, then replace it. I know how frustrating it can be. We had some ground water seepage in our rarely used guest room, from Gustav, and we didn't know until we smelled it...ICK! The good news is padding is cheap to replace, and the carpet can be steam cleaned. That was all we had to do to THAT room |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Mildew is caused by mold spores, and bleach will kill these. You need to thoroughly dry out the area, some places rent fans and space heaters for this, and sometimes this alone is enough to kill the mildew. If not, bleach and water will do it, but this can't be used on carpeting, just on walls, or where ever you see mildew. If there is carpeting your best bet is to pull it up and replace the pad, after spraying the floor with a bleach solution, and allowing this to dry. If it's another type of flooring I would use a bleach and water mixture, and allow to dry.

| Just be sure you don't have mold growing behind the wall. If so the only way to get rid of the smell is to tear out the wall |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I wouldn't take it up. If water can seep under there, so could a bleach solution, and it's probably just around some edge. I'm not sure of the proportions, it's may say on the bleach bottle, but just pour a mixture of bleach and water in the area. This should kill the mildew. After that, see if you can rent some fans, or drying equipment. This will make a huge difference, and it's what insurance companies do when they repair a flooded area. By the way, have you contacted your homeowners insurance? This is usually covered, and they should be able to give you some great advice, they would want to fix this, before it gets into walls. If the area has high humidity and low ventilation, you might want buy a dehumidifier.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | As a Louisiana resident who has had a lot of storm/water damage as of late, I very respectfully beg to differ. Taking up the floor, and mopping with a bleach solution, is the only way you can make SURE you killed the mold spores. There is no way you can determine what is under the linoleum unless you pull it up, and it is better safe than sorry. My husband and I steam cleaned our carpet and put an air purifier in the room for a day...when the smell didn't go away, it dawned on us that it was in the padding. Sure enough, it was. We replaced the padding, and eliminated a stinky, smelling mess, for only $30. Well worth it, if you have lived for mildew smell for even a day, you can understand. I would call my insurance agent...they will send an adjustor out who will give you detailed instructions on how to best handle the problem. Your homeowners insurance will pay for the damage the water leak caused, but it WILL NOT pay for further damages sustained from NOT taking care of the problem. EX: you don't remove the walls, or the floor, and you develop mold, which can cause even MORE damage, and be deadly. You could end up with a house that is unlivable, and without insurance compensation. I know it is an extreme, but it can, and has happened. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The difference is carpet isn't usually glued to the floor and linoleum usually is. I do agree calling an insurance agent would be a wise choice. One thing though, mold spores are in the air all the time, and they aren't necessarily dangerous unless you are allergic or their numbers are too high. They need moisture to grow, and this is why a through drying of the area is important.
