| Nurse in the Navy Soo my husband is trying to convince me to be a nurse in the navy. We were reading about it and it sounds really great. I am working on my lvn now and from what the web site says is that you can join now and they will pay for you to finish and get your rn and give you a monthly allowance or you can join after and they will give you between 20 and 30 thousand dollars sign on bonus and may reimburse you for your schooling. I really am not sure though....my husband is in the marine corps now...so by the time I joined he would already be out which is good. But we also have a daughter and I don't know if I can do the military thing again. I mean before I met my husband I had been accepted to the air force academy and had planned on going, but he had already joined the marine corps and that would have been to hard. Soo it's not like I am scared of joining the military but I am scared of our family being "owned" again. Does any one have any advise???

Donating YT 10K Club Member | A friend's daughter had completed her LPN and joined the navy to earn her RN. Unfortunately for her....she's realized she HATES ships. She was assigned to the Wasp and went out for 6 months. Right now she's stationed at the Navy Hospital...and works really crazy hours...like 36 without sleep. Not kidding. I guess I didn't make is sound real appealing there huh?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I know she went out for 3 months. I said 6 months before...but now I'm thinking it was less. I have no clue when she'll have to be on board again. The biggest difference I can think of...between her situation and yours. She's single with no children. I have no idea how many Naval hospitals there are...but you'd probably need to realize you would be stationed at one of those. My friend's daughter is fortunate...because she's stationed at the Navy Hospital in Portsmouth, VA...which is just a few miles from her home. Her hours at work are mind boggling though...with a child...you'd have to consider who would watch her if hubby was working too. If you could get a recruiter to answer you truthfully...meaning not fudge the truth on where you would go and sea duty...then you'd could make an informed decision whether this is something you wish to do.

| Yes i put in a request for a navy officer recruiter to call me, because I would be going in the officer program. I live on a marine base now so there is a navy hospital here and I have talked to a few navy nurses. What my husband and I were possible planning on doing is me joining for 3 years and while I am serving he can do school. I am not sure though, I am just looking at options because I am having a tough time affording nursing school. I have pell grants but they don't come in until 2 months after school has started, which makes it really hard and even after I get them they still don't cover very much.

| Well, I was going to say what a great idea, and esp. since you know what being in the military is all about, but if you had to be gone a lot, it might be really tough. I just think the benefits are so great and the retirement and everything is something not to ignore. I wish I'd done it when I started out in nursing; I was just such a scaredy cat at having to leave home.....dumb! But I didn't have children either. You do have the advantage of knowing the system though and it seems like a great opportunity~ there's always give and take for every situation though. And it helps to go into something like this with the right attitude and no reservations, b/c it's a big commitment, like you say. Are there any scholarships you might be eligible for at the school you're going to? Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Nvnvgirl reminded me....do you have hospitals there with nursing programs? Two of our hospitals will foot the bill for school...you contractually agree to work for them a minimum of 3 years. I don't know why I didn't think of that...my neice is presently in one of those programs.

| Reallly? That is awesome. Our hospital here out in town is pretty bad, it has really bad reputation and is very small.

And the very best advice I would give to anyone who graduates from nursing school, if they didn't train at one of the larger teaching hospitals (meaning medical schools), is to either try to get a job at one or work wherever they'll hire you for a year and then get a job at one. If I'd stayed where I started out, I'd probably have been just a typical small town floor nurse. Working at a teaching hospital, I learned so much and because of that, no matter where I went, and no matter what job I applied for, I got. It's amazing that even when there isn't a nursing shortage, if you've got good skills and knowledge, you can pretty much write your own ticket anywhere. I'll be interested in what the recruiter has to say to you. It's a big decision, and with the way things are in the world right now, it's really hard to say what's going to happen esp. with a new president. So, I definitely don't blame you for being a little worried about it. And needing health care is a big concern, esp. when you've got a child. What does your dh do, if you don't mind me asking? I know jobs arent' plentiful to begin with, but do you think he'll have a real problem finding one with health care?
