| Has anyone had Iron Deficiency Anemia? I just found out I have severe Iron Deficent Anemia! I have to take Iron every day and go to my Gynocologists as soon as possible. I am only 42 is this anything to be real concerned about? My Doc thinks it is possibly fibroids in my uterus.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Iron My mom found out in April that she had the same problem at her yearly exam. The doctor told her to take iron and change her diet to include more red meat and foods that include iron. She was tested a second time to determine if the problem was a blood loss issue causing the problem and found that was not the problem and will be retested again to make sure things are improving. The biggest concern was that her levels were so low that surgery could not have been done in an emergency of any kind.....therefore the need to get those levels back up. Once on iron and some diet changes, she began noticing she had more energy and felt better.....even though she did not realize there was a problem to begin with. Good luck......hopefully you can get your iron levels back up and it will be nothing serious.

| iv'e had it since i was 10 my skin has a tint of yellow to it due to anemia. i have to take iron pills and i also take prenatal pills. i do get headaches sometimes and i don't feel thirsty as much as i should. but overall it's not all that bad. they watch me closely to make sure that my red blood cells are balanced with my white. but other than that it's easy to keep up with

| I am slightly anemic and I take an iron pill daily. After a month or so, i felt much more energy and noticed that I didn't bruise as much as before. I worked for a doctor at the time and he said the best iron product on the market is called Ultra-Hematinic by a company called Biogenesis. It's relatively low-dose and it won't make you constipated. |

| Had same problem Yep! I have had fibroids in the past and had them removed. They are a benign tissue growth ie tumor that occurs in the uterus. It can cause you to have heavy menstrual cycles which leads to the anemia. This then requires you to take iron supplements to replenish your iron stores to correct the anemia. The tumor(s) don't go away just get progressively bigger causing your cycles to get heavier and heavier. If you are through having children, your gynecologist may suggest having a hysterectomy. There is currently a new procedure being done where the tumor(s) can be removed laparoscopically whereby you don't need to have a hysterectomy. Your OB/Gyn can refer you to someone who does this procedure if you opt not to have the hysterectomy. I had mine removed back in 96' without doing the hysterectomy because I did want to have children. The procedure is called a myomectomy whereby the uterus is opened and the tumor is then removed. So your options are, myomectomy, hysterectomy or the laparoscopic procedure. The OB/Gyn may even place you on hormonal therapy to regulate your cycles so as to decrease the menstrual bleeding to prevent the anemia. It is not a deadly condition. Many women especially African American women have this condition.

| I have been anemic since 7th grade I believe...I was ALWAYS tired and could literally go to sleep at 4 and not wake up till 2am and then go back to sleep again, I would bruise and still do if someone touches me with slight pressure. I found the iron pills made my stomach hurt terrible!! and I stopped taking them (smart.....huh??), I take daily vitamins, eat alot of red meat and broccoli, and I am still sleepy and bruise less then I used to but I still do pretty easily and I get BAD BAD migraines every few weeks espeaailly before and during that "time"...I don't have a severe case and I would probably never even know if I took the pills...but they made me cramp like crazy..

| I am pretty sure I am anemic. I am always tired, my fingernails turn purple often and I am sluggish.
