| Need advice about a new laptop I've been having quite a bit of trouble with my laptop and finally got around to taking it in to be looked at today. Well, they estimated about $300 to fix it and I'm not sure it's worth putting that much money into it. So, we left there and went computer shopping! I found one that I really like but I hate making purchases like this without doing alot of research first. Here's a link to the one I am interested in : Gateway - Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - Pacific Blue - T-6836 I mostly need it for the internet-email, YT, and of course, school things. I also use microsoft office quite a bit and need lots of storage for photos and short videos of the dogs. If you wouldn't mind, would you take a look at it and let me know what you think. Does anyone have this laptop? Thank you so much, I really appreciate any advice I can get.

| To be honest, I have had several Gateway desktops and they have all given me grief. It's hard to find parts that work with them. I recently got a Dell Inspiron laptop and I just love it!

| My best friend has had a gateway laptop for 4 years now (she bought it when she came to college) and hasn't had any problems with it. Before I bought my Acer that I have now, I bought an HP that lasted 3 days before the hard drive crashed! I don't like my Acer and I'm too paranoid to get another HP. I toyed with the idea of going with a Mac but they are way more expensive than I'm willing to pay.

| It sounds great, but keep researching. I hate to sound chipo but try walmart.com , Office depot, just to mention a few. Olso, make sure Office is preintalled, with the registration, not just a trial, and all other softwear you will need. |

| I've had Gateways before as well and I think you're putting yourself in the path of computer problems by getting one. I remember when my mom got our first desktop when I was younger and a day after having it home we found out the hard drive was screwed so they had to replace it. After that, we still had loads of problems with it. Go with a Dell or something else.

YT 2000 Club Member | To be honest, I wouldn't take a Gateway if someone GAVE it to me. My friends caught on fire IN his lap!! Of course Gateway was more than happy to ship him a new one, but when he opened it and took it out of the box BRAND NEW, and turned it on, NO operating system was found. They sent him another one and nothing but issue after issue with it. Good luck in your search for a new laptop though. I understand what you mean by not wanting to purchase one before researching, I'm the same way. I've always had HP's (Desktops and laptops) and haven't had any trouble with them.

| I don't know anything about Gateway. I bought a Macbook a few months ago and I love it! My co-workers Dell laptop, when she plugged in the power cord, it fried the whole laptop and the bottom bubbled up! She said sparks were flying everywhere! I know Dell has had recalls on power cords and batteries. They had to replace alot of them with our work laptops!

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I got a sony viao last summer..love it. I would stay away from Dell or Gateway. My mom and sister got brand new Dells the same time and they are both a mess and have had plug and battery problems. I love my sony and would get another again. I don't care for the quality of Dell at all. Plus they make their systems hard for upgrades unless you buy their parts. Meanwhile there are other manufacturers that make parts (memory, hard drives, etc) at much cheaper prices. I got a nice Sony and then a few months ago I put in way more memory for an additional $60. I wanted to upgrad my sister's Dell for her but can't unless it's their parts. My kids have a Dell desktop and it's a PIA too. If you can't afford the MAC ( I couldn't either especially for only wanting to be on the web etc) then get a Sony.

| Everyone in my family have Toshiba laptops. We just got one in March and love it. It was pretty reasonable too ($550 and came with a wireless router and printer).

| Thank you so much for everyone's advice. Unfortuatly, I think computer brands are one of those things that everyone seems to have a different opinion on. I have read reviews upon more reviews and I think I settled on a good one. I got fed up with mine when I got home from work today so I just went and bought my new one! They are optimizing it for me so I won't get it until later tomorrow morning. My major deciding factors (aside from the technical aspects ) were weight and color/style. Whatcha think? I think it's pretty!! Sony - VAIO Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - Crocodile Silver - VGN-CR506E/J

| I have a Gateway and I HATE it, I wish I could go back and choose another brand. It has many issues and is less than a year old. |

| I would go with the sony. I think you would be happier with the way it functions. I had both a Dell and a Gateway. I didnt like either of them. Eventually, my uncle got me this 'bare bones' laptop (no parts in it) and I got to pick out the parts he put in it. Ive had it for four years and never had a problem with it.
