| I found a baby bird and I don't know what to do... please help I was just coming back from taking the dogs for a walk and noticed a baby bird sitting in the fence in my backyard. It doesn't move when you come near it so I know it can't fly. I have NO clue how it got so high up... there's not even a tree directly over where he is. I know he's alive because he follows you with his eyes. I don't know what to do Is there a wildlife rescue or something I can take him to? I know if I touch him the mother won't come back. What should I do??? I feel so bad for it

| We found a baby bird outside of my sister's house a couple of months ago and didn't know what to do either. It just sat there chirping but otherwise didn't move. We did not want to touch it either. We gave it some time and then finally it flew away on its own. We thought it must have just stunned itself somehow. Yours doesn't look stuck or anything in the fence. Maybe after a while it will just fly off. Is it dark out now or is it still a little light? Ours flew off finally right when it started to get dark out.

| Thanks for the response. I don't know if I should somehow get him to the ground... I just checked and he's still just perched on the chain link fence. BUMP

| By the way, it's not chirping or making any noises. I have yet to see another bird come near it.

| I had a similar situation last summer. It was a green heron that I had come across, big but a baby. I have no clue how it ended up in our neighborhood. Anyway, I did a search online and found a wildlife rescue that wasn't to far away. I caught the bird in a box and met the woman at a grocery store parking lot not far from here to give her the bird. This one didn't seem to be injured at all but it would not have made it through the night with coyote's and owls around.

| Aww, poor little guy. I would just let him be though- he'll probably figure it all out for himself. We have a local wild bird rescue but they wouldn't come out for an uninjured bird. Does anyone know what kind of bird it is? He doesn't look familiar to me so it's hard to guess how young he is.

| This one was totally out of it's element, otherwise I would have probably let it be. It was be bopping around like it owned the place. LOL I'd be willing to bet that the one on the fence is injured, it isn't normal for a bird to just sit there like that, and unfortunately it probably is not going to live anyway. Nature is beautiful but also can be very brutal.

| I would keep an eye on him but not do anything at this point but when it comes to the point that you can't watch anymore, i would try to catch him otherwise, he'll just get eaten. I did hear it was a myth that the momma bird would reject him if you touch him. Not sure if that is true or not but would be worth researching. Years ago, one of our dogs grabbed a young bird that was just learning how to fly and we saved the bird from the dog and put him in a box and fed him worms with a knitting needle. After a few days, maybe a week, he just flew away one day. But not long after, he came back and chirped at us as if to say hello. It warms my heart to think of it! |

| Thanks for the replies. He's still just sitting there I wish it was light out so I could watch him to see if the parents were coming back and to look at him better to see if he seemed injured but it's pitch black out! Gosh I don't know what to do

YT 2000 Club Member | When I was younger, we had a baby owl fall out of it's nest in our yard, my mother called a wild life place by us called Back to the Wild and Hootie went and they were able to take care of him/her. Do you have something like that that you could call?

| I haven't been able to find anything like that really.. and if I did I'm sure nothings open tonight. I just don't know what to do with it tonight.. I'm not 100% sure it's hurt so I'm afraid to bring it inside. Something is probably wrong because it would not just be sitting there doing nothing for hours right??
