| Legal Question I need advise...we just had a company put a new roof on our house and were told they would pull the permit. Well, when we called to finalize everything we asked for a copy of it along with a copy of the warranty. They sent the warranty but no permit (guessing they never got one). Since then we've tried to call 3 times in the period of a week and they are obviously avoiding us. In the contract it doesn't specify say they'll pay for the permit but it does say "includes all taxes and fees" and since we were told verbally I'm hoping that holds up. But the problem is the contract also states we have to pay in full no more than 10 days after completion of the job or they start charging us a $50 late fee plus interest. Does anyone know if we are obligated to pay now (if we can ever get a hold of them) and then go after them later for the permit and any other fees associated with getting it after the fact or can we legally wait to pay without penalty until they provide a valid permit to us?

I Love My Babies Donating Member | A copy of the permit should have been posted on the job site. Each state's laws are a little different, so you need to check with yours. Did you go through a licensed contractor? Are these guys listed in your phone book's yellow pages? Simetimes you can get some information there. You can also check with the BBB in your area to see if there have been any other complaints on these people. Did they tell you that they would get the building permit? Call your county building and ask them if one was filed. Tell them what is going on. If a permit wasn't filed.. at least they will know that you were told they were to get one. And you can get it.. to keep yourself out of trouble. Good Luc to you.

| We probably should have asked earlier when they were working on the house but it was the weekend and the workers didn't speak the best English so we figured we'd wait until Monday to call the owner. But this is a pretty big company so it doesn't really make sense - they're a Gold Star member of the BBB with no complaints and other websites that guarentee the contractors they recommend. They DID say they'd be getting the permit, I remember asking if we had to get it or if they would and they acted like of course, don't be silly, we take care of that...right
