| Bathroom Remodeling Hello My husband and I getting ready to remodel our bathroom and are in a stand off about what to do about the tub. We have well water that is high in iron, which means I've scrubbed the tub to the point that the slick finish is gone! We are trying to decide between having it refinished or having one of those tub liners put in. I'm voting for having it refinished, which is about $1000 cheaper than the surround. It takes about 3 days for the refinish verses 1 day for the surround and we only have 1 bathroom! Still for a thousand dollars, I can be inconvenienced for a couple days. We have family near by that will let us shower at their house. Anyone have any experience with doing either of these things? I'd love to hear your experience, good or bad. Thanks in advance

| Hi We moved into an older house, and the bathtub looked as though the former owners had skated in it. There were actual deep gouges in the bottom of it, and it was terribly discoloured. But to be fair it was an old tub. I opted to have it refinished, and they did a beautiful job. I honestly don't know how they brought it back the way they did. The down side is that there is a bit of an odour, from whatever it is that they used on it, but only for a few hours, and so we just did some gardening outside for a while. I'm glad we had it done. Hubby is so hung up on the fact that we won't have a shower for a couple days. I'll get him a hotel room for goodness sakes! Our tub is 58 years old. I practically get in there and close my eyes so I don't have to look at it. Chattiesmom I'll show after pictures, but not before

| lol I know the feeling. It has been three or four years since we had it done, but I don't think it was that long before we could use it. It sounds as though you have an older house, also. I insisted that we buy this big old house because it had character, it was stuck in a 1940's mode, and nothing had been done to it since then. But we persevered , and it has turned into a beautiful home. Remember the movie the money pit? Well, that's us. My husband just asked the other day if I would like him to build a new home, and I said no way, we've put too much blood sweat and tears into this one. Good luck with your tub Janice |

| I know this is probably not an expense you want to take on ... but something to consider. A water softening system. It REALLY helps! Makes your hair and skin softer and filters out the iron from the water so that does not happen to your tubs, sinks and toilets. I'd get a new jacuzzi tub. I think they are like $600 at home depot and then tile the walls instead of get a surround unit. Is that something you could do? I have a friend who refinishes tubs and stuff, he did mine at my old house before we sold it. The materials are cheap and it took about 3 hours for him from start to finish. I couldn't shower or bathe in it for 2 days. It looked gorgeous! He charged us $75! Nice guy huh???

We have a water softener and a whole house filtration system. We also have reverse osmosis drinking fountain on our kitchen sink and still, the water will stain. $75! WOW Yes, very nice guy Good for you Our bathroom is so small, even to get the tub out would mean tearing out walls. I'm doing good just talking my husband into this! I wish we could get a new jacuzzi tub, I'd love that We're going to have to have some plumbing work done as well, so ours will be a bit more expensive...one estimate we got was $1030.00 That was for new walls, plumbing and refinishing the tub. The liner was $2000, that included the plumbing as well. We did get less expensive estimates too, but not much.

Yes, we live in an old farmhouse. It is very pretty and full of charm, but we haven't done much to it since we moved in. Right before we moved in, we went through the whole house and redid everything! Well, it's been 13 yrs and it's time to do it again. We are also putting in new floors in the kitchen and hallway, refinishing the hardwood floors in the living room, dining room and master bedroom. We're putting new carpeting in the upstairs bedrooms, all new windows and maybe doors and hopefully, refacing the kitchen cabinets. Oh and I'm getting new appliances. I'm long overdue for those. I can't wait for it all to be finished. So how has your tub held up? That was another concern of my husband. He such turkey sometimes. When he gets an idea in head, it's stuck in there! I would love to build a new home, but the market really stinks right now. Which really if your buying and selling shouldn't be a big deal, but I'm afraid we'd sit on this house forever if we put it on the market right now. We have approx. 3000 sq. ft. and when we bought our home, we had 5 children and now they have all left the nest but one. We don't need all this room and I'm tired of the stairs. So hopefully in the next few years, we'll build and I'll get what I want. Probably more than you needed to know Thanks again for sharing your experience.

| Wow! And I think I have too much room with 2000 sq. ft. It is big for two people, (all our kids gone) but I enjoy the space. I now have room for all my junk. I bet your home is beautiful. Always a dream of mine to own a farm house. I wouldn't want to leave it. To answer your question, the tub still looks really nice. I think it cost us $300to have it done, versus the hassle of trying to get it out of here, which wouldn't have been easy. |

I should say, I didnt get a liner. I got the tub repainted. It was a regular tub and the paint was peeling off of it. Is that what is happening to yours? Take a look at something like this. It might be more affordable. Bathtub Refinishing, tub refinishing, reglazing, bathtub porcelain resurfacing, bathroom remodeling, its not a liner, and its not a new tub. Its called refinishing. My tub looked AWESOME when it was done. And I think it costs around $300. They can do tiles and toilets and sinks too... and in any color you want. You can change the color of your bathroom without getting anything new.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Thanks for that link. We did the bathroom 7 years ago (hubby's cousin did it) and during his install and tiling he dropped some tiles and scratched the tub...so it has some marks. I was just looking at it yesterday saying I need to replace it. I don't want to rip out the whole thing though. Thanks for this alternative.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I think you will get more bang for your buck and if you choose to resell down the line the renovation/refinish will bring a higher resale value to the house.
