Embarassed Confessions of a Yard Sale addict...

You might have a problem with yard sales if you fall and hurt your ankle and still manage to purchase the special items you really wanted!

This is exactly what happened to me on Saturday morning. My husband and I were on our way to our favorite antique store. It's only open on Saturdays, and they save broken plates and such for me. Isn't that great? Anyway, we were stopping at a local corner store for some gas that has now reached a price equal to or greater than that of gold, but that's another story.

We saw this fantastic yard sale, and I spotted some plates they had even at a distance. You can tell I'm a mosaic artist can't you? We parked and were crossing the street when I just simply tripped over my own feet and went down. John managed to catch me enough that he broke my fall. I didn't hit my head or anything, but when I tried to stand up, I felt dizzy and weak. I just stayed there on the curb for awhile calming down. When I tested my ankle, it hurt like the dickens when I put weight on it. I saw a lady walking over to the plates and sent John over to claim them first. He looked at me like I had lost my mind! lol But he managed to snag all of the blue and white flowered ones and a couple of the ones with roses. yay!

I saw a couple of other items like some Rogers silverplate silverware, a bag of vintage marbles, an antique bracelet, a cool vintage wooden box purse that will be cool to mosaic. There were some sweet finds there!

When I almost couldn't walk back to the van and only made it by hopping on one foot and leaning on John, we realized that my ankle had to be severely sprained at the least, so we decided to pass on the antique store this week. I figured she'd save any broken stuff because she knows I try to make it by her place as often as I can.

So, we went home and I elevated my foot and iced it down. The cozy cuddle bag I had in the freezer came in very handy. It's a good thing I didn't sell my prototype! Finally, I realized that I absolutely could not put pressure on it, so we had to get it checked out and probably x-rayed. After several frustrating phone calls, we found a clinic with Saturday hours on our health plan.

The nurse who took me to x-ray and stuff had a bit of an attitude, but who wouldn't if they had to work on Saturday? She kept saying that it was probably just sprained and that they get a lot of sprains that patients originally thought were broken.

Well, you know how x-ray technicians aren't allowed to tell you anything about the test/x-ray results? This gal didn't say a word, but her whole attitude toward me changed as soon as she saw the x-ray, so I knew it was more than a sprain.

Fast forward to the doc walking into the room. He says right off that it's broken. He gets me fitted for this support boot thingy that they put on my foot/leg to support it and keep it in place, writes a prescription for painkillers and then casually says that he's also making me an appointment with a podiatrist (foot specialist) because the break is a little high on my ankle and might require a cast or even surgery! So keep good thoughts for me next week that at the worst I need a hard cast.

On the way to the only pharmacy on my health plan that is open on Saturday, we passed Hobby Lobby, and I must have had that look on my face because even before I could say anything, John said, "No, I am not carrying you into Hobby Lobby!" I didn't say a word, just looked longingly at the store as we passed by.

Meds had me loopy, so I didn't get much mosaic work done yesterday. I don't think John trusted me with sharp objects anyway. lol! I've been able to take less medicine today, so I'm not as fuzzy.

Well, at least I can get out of housework for awhile, and I can do my art while sitting down.

Gizmo doesn't know what to think. He keeps trying to get the bledsoe boot off, and he doesn't understand why my foot is resting on HIS cozy cuddle bag. He keeps trying to pull it out from under my foot. When I get up to hobble somewhere, he often barks at the boot like it's attacking me or something!

If you're a geek like I am and think x-rays are interesting, I attached a copy of one.

At least I'm on summer break so I don't have to go to work like this. But darn it, I'm going to have this to deal with most of the summer.

OMG Judy! I am so sorry that that happened to you this weekend but I'm sure glad that your hubby was there to take care of you. Gosh that was sure lucky. And to top it off to have a husband that supports your artisitic talents and helps you to get the plates, etc that you were hunting for despite the circumstances....what a great guy!

So Sorry your ankle is broken but just think of all the extra time you can spend on your mosaics and so forth (trying to think of an upside for ya ) Poor little Gizmo, sounds like he is totally confused. I bet he will turn out to be quite the nurse and a big help taking care of you this Summer.

I will send lots of good energy your way this week for whatever procedure your doctor recommends. Hoping that you don't have to have surgery and that a cast will suffice. (fingers & toes are crossed)

BTW, you said you have the summer off....are you a teacher?

Ha! That's great! I was an elementary school teacher for 10 years....3rd & 4th grade...and I SO looked forward to Summer Breaks. Whew! I'm sure glad this fall happened after school was out for you.....hopefully you don't have one more week of teaching or anything. BTW, what subject(s) do you teach?

I am so sorry! As soon as I read you were dizzy I thought yep, she broke it. When I broke my arm playing kick ball that is the firdt thing they asked before they helped me up. I remember that sick, dizzy feeling years later. I hope you just need a cast and heal quickly.

I really love being a teacher, but I really need my summer break! The kids have no idea do they? lol

I'm out now and have been for about a week. I have some workshops to go to at the end of July, but we don't actually start back until mid August, so hopefully I will be mostly healed by then.

What do I teach? Well....I don't tell people online very often because they can get a little weird if I do. I'm an English teacher! LOL! But I am NOT a grammar or spelling Nazi! I make those mistakes myself. I just like to relax and let loose when I'm on YT, so ya'll ain't gotta worry none!

OH, is that what it was!!?? I wondered why I had never felt like that before and wondered if it had anything to do with my high blood pressure. Good to know!

Thanks for the positive thoughts.

Hi Judy
It is good to know you are feeling better, and in good spirits. My dad loves doing mosaic work as well, but it got to the point that the pieces he was doing were to big and heavy, so now he paints instead , I do have quite a few tiles and glass, and I wanted to do something for one of the walls on my back yard, but it is already extremely hot, so this project will have to wait until fall.

Awww...I hate that you broke your ankle! But I'm glad you didn't lose your enthusiasm for getting those plates! That was so cute! And then had the gumption to want to go to Hobby Lobby! I love mosaics. Show me some of the work you have done, please! I've done a few little things here and there. I have a great 'plan' in my head...but when I try to execute it... Not so much!! You have a really good positive attitude and energy! Don't overdo!!!!

That sounds like a great project! I agree though...wait until it's a little cooler, but be careful. I didn't see, but do you live in a location that has weather in the winter below freezing? If you do, check your materials and make sure they can handle that. I bring all of my outside garden pieces inside during a freeze warning just like my potted plants. It sounds like your dad can help you with all of that though. I want to see photos when you're done!

Hey! If you ever want to get rid of any of that, hollar at me! (Sorry, couldn't resist. )

Judy, that looks like a bad break! Ow!! Not just one fracture, but two it looks like (radiating from the same spot). I sure hope you don't have to have surgery.

I love yard sales, too, though I rarely have a chance to go to any. Sounds like they have some really good ones around your place!

Take care of yourself. Hope your husband has recovered enough from his surgery that now he can take care of you.

Thank you! You're such a sweetie. You can see some of my work in my shop, but I have more photos on Flickr actually (along with some photos of Gizmo). My account on flickr is jcollander, but I can't remember how to go straight to my photostream right now. You can find it if you do a search on Flickr. Thanks for asking to see them.
