My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Hey you computer experts!!!! How do you make sure all your personal info is off your computer before you sell it? I've tried system restore but it only takes me back a couple months. I'd like to sell it. It a GREAT computer. So I just want to make sure all my info is not accessable. Suggestions on an easy and effective way? |

| You could either remove the harddrive (which would cause the value to go down) or you could format the hard drive, basically wipe it clean by re downloading your operating system (windows xp,98 etc) Im not sure the programs are thorough enough IMO

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | so I'd just need to re install the operating disk???? Will that make it like new, when I bought it? |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | Yup .... the easiset way is to just re-install your version of Windows. It puts the computer right back to when you bought it.

But be aware that you have to reinstall all the drivers as well, because if you dont the computer will not run correctly and have no sound. The drivers are on the disks that came with the computer when you purchased it

| If you reinstall just the OS, all your programs and files are still there. I think she wants all of that wiped out and a format is the only way i would recommend so that all of her information cannot be retrieved. Just deleting files does not get "rid" of data either. There are computer hacks out there that can get information off of disks even though you think it has been deleted. You cannot be too careful these days with identity theft on the rise. |
