| Herniated Disc Soo my boyfriend has been in pain for months now. It's his lower back, on the right side. Every time he goes to get up he's moaning and complains about how bad his work is. He has to bend weird when he's getting up and looks ridiculous, I can't imagine what his co-workers think when they see him. So I've been telling him for a few weeks to go to a doctor and he finally did. It turns out his L5 vertebrate (lower back) is herniated and the doctor said that surgery is the only thing they can do to help him. Well he came home freaking out. He's scared to have the surgery because if they slip up, it could be really bad. This is true and very serious but, he's only 23 and can't live like this for the rest of his life. Has anyone had a herniated disc? Know anyone who's had the surgery? The doctor said the surgery is very simple but, he read online that he can lose control of things. He read about a guy losing control of his well, bowel movements, and that just did it for him. He's thinking about trying a chiropractor out. I just can't see him like this for the rest of his life.

| My dad has a herniated disk in his lower back as well. He first started having problems with it maybe 10 years ago. He too was told that surgery was the only option. He went to a chiropractor instead and to this day, he still has not had the surgery. I was too young (12 at the time) to really know all the details about what the chiropractor did, but whatever it was, it worked for my dad. 90% of the time since, he hasn't had a problem with it...I can count on one hand the number of flair ups he's had with it. By no means am I saying the chiropractor will save him from surgery...but I am trying to give you hope that maybe there is another option for your boyfriend. I would definetly go see a chiropractor and at least get an opinion from him.

| Thanks! I really think I'm gonna make him go see a chiropractor. I think it'll help, even if it's a little bit. I'm glad it won't for your dad, hopefully my bf will have the same luck. Thanks for posting!!!

| herniated disc My husband had the surgery, it is a big thing, but, if he see's a neuosurgeon they will only do it if it the last option. There are two kinds, the fusion being the most agressive. If it has to be done, do it. He will have no regrets in the end. Most of the stuff you hear is a bunch of scare from the old days. There's alway a chance something will go wrong in surgery, but, the end result out weighs the risks. Its not a picnic, but, no wone needs to live in pain. |

| Disc surgery 2 times Wow I actually know something on this forum I am 41 and have been in great health my whole life, so I was really surprised when...first time I was 19...lower back pain...pain shooting down my right leg. Felt like a lightning bolt shooting through my whole body! I was scared to death and kept pretending everything was okay till I could no longer walk and finally broke down and told my parents. I saw Dr. Mirbaha in St. Louis Missouri...he is a sports medicine Dr.anyway my L-4 was ruptured and he did not want to do surgery on my since I was so young...he did an experimental procedure from Canada...Cymopapene Disc Injection- he used a Papaya enzyme and injected into my disc...Took a few months to work by dissolving my disc but I was one of the lucky ones, complete recovery. No longer done in the USA...lots of mishaps! Five years ago....out of nowhere I had pain in my hiney right by my tail bone...shooting pain down my leg again....kinda like riding a bike you never forget. I was not too happy to say the least but his time I had ruptured L-5 and had surgery by Dr. Heitkamp here in Arlington Texas...he is the most amazing neuro surgeon! I am as good as new...after my surgery I went on to have two more more children and two c-sections and no pain whatsover in my lower back these days. I found out I have degenerative disc disease. I try to stay in shape and keep my core strong...I just pray it doesn't happen again I will keep you in my prayers! Make sure to do your homework....get a second opinion. Get references too....I know it hurts but it will get better in time...follow your doctors instructions Please feel free to PM if you need to!

| Ha sorry i had to laugh at that. lol Thanks Cricket! I'm gonna show my bf this thread when I get back into town (I'm visiting my parents in NJ)! The disc giving him the problem is actually his L5 too. He talked to him earlier today and he said he has an appointment on Friday with his dad's back surgeon. So we'll see what he says and then figure out what to do next. Thanks for sharing your story!!! I'm glad you're feeling great now. Hopefully he has you're luck, I can't imagine he being in this pain for the rest of his life. It's horrible watching him try to get up and walk.

| My hubby has a herniated disc. Will not do surgery. He regime, when his back acts up is to take regular bufferin aspirin, several pills and then more every 4 hours. This is was told to him by an ortho doctor who was a friend. I know someone who has had surgery and he said that it was instant relief. But he did too much too fast and injuried himself all over. So if your bf has surgery, tell him to take it easy and don't try to be macho. Good luck.
