| Night Shift... Anyone? I just started working nights on monday.. and I have only went through 2 nights and Im dead, I feel like crap I can't stay awake or anything. I am not a night person, Im the person who goes to bed at 9 or 10 and will wake up early, 7ish. What do you do to stay awake or get your body adjusted to it? My shift is 6:45 pm to 6:45 am. one week I will work Monday Tuesday Friday Saturday and Sunday ... Then the next week I work Wednesday and Thursday. THis weeekend is going to kick me in the butt, seeing how I have only went through 2 nights and I was falling asleep last night at work |

| Nightshift is really tough. I was on it for awhile, and it took some time to get used to sleeping during the day. I used BLACK oversized towels over the windows (our curtains were not dark enough to keep the light out). I also took the phone off the hook...... (I didn't give my cell # out much and everyone who had the # knew not to call unless it was an emergency) Just give it some time...... and if you can't go to sleep... get up and do something that might make you sleepy. At first it took me 3-4 hours before I could go to sleep..... and that got better over time. Good Luck!! ....... just give it some time, it WILL get better!

| Girl, I totally hear you. I work 2nd shift, not exactly the same, but still, it takes some adjusting. I would suggest not going to bed right after you get off work. Take a shower, eat some dinner, try to live like it is earlier. I get off work between 11 and 1 most days, and I come home, shower, make dinner, spend some time with the pups, and then go to bed. It helps me sleep later. If you are serious about keeping a job at these hours, then you have to adjust your life accordingly. If you were working a 9 to 5, you wouldn't get up 5 hours before your shift, so try to keep yourself in bed longer. and if you did work a 1st shift, you would probably stay up 4 or 5 hours later after you got up work. Just start trying to stay up a little longer each night. Try to watch the sunrise after you get off work. Walk your dogs once you get home. Anything to adjust to a normal work day schedule, with time for you before and after work. Best of luck! I have tried working 1st shift and like 2nd shift jobs much better. (most likely because I am a perpetual college student)

| I will eventually be able to go to days, but it will take some time. I love this job, but I don't know about the nights. First off its hard for me to stay awake, and then we arn't as busy on nights as days, which I am not use to. I keep my cell phone on silent, so far that hasn't been a problem. I slept almost all day today, so i will go to bed around midnight or so tonight, not to early.. but not to late. I hope I get adjusted soon bc I don't know how much of this I can take. |

| I used to be a travel RN and got stuck on some night shifts for 3 months at a time. I was one miserable person during those days!! I am used to waking up at 5 or 6 am and going to bed by 10. I never got used to it! |

| For some reason I don't think that I will be able to get use to it either. Once I get my 6 weeks done I will be able to put in a request for days, but Im sure the list is long... I know one girl has been on it since March of last year.. and shes finally at the top. Maybe I will be able to make it a little later by then.lol |

| When I first became a nurse I worked the 11pm-7am shift. It was the worst 10 years of my life. It seems I would no sooner get adjusted to sleeping and days off would come and mess everything up again when you tried to keep a normal schedule I walked around in a fog most of the time.

| Well thanks to everyone. Its just going to take some getting use to and hopefully I will be able to. I have thought about taking meds.. but Im able to go right to sleep, atleast as of right now. I know that if I take the meds that it will just make me feel like crap especially during the middle of the night.. so thats going to be my last resort if I start having problems sleeping.. The other good thing that i have is I don't have to work a bunch of days in a row.. I either work 2-3 days then get 2-3 days off.. so im staying on a normal persons sleeping schedule, except im not going to go to bed really early Im going to stay up later. |

| Yep I am a day person also. I have been on swing for almost 4 years. (6 pm 2 am) It took years to get used to swing. Now I am 6 on the list to go to days and when the time comes I am not sure if I will want to give up the senority I have on swing. Good luck to you. I found that I have to keep my swing schedule even on my days off. It makes it easier.

| I've been working nights for almost 9 years now. From 9:30pm to 8:00 am. A lot of the guys I've been working with have been doing it longer and they still doze off at work. For the most part I get good rest during the day so it's not too bad. I also have a big cup of coffee on the way in, the extra caffeine kick helps. It's going to take some time imo it's something that you never get used to just because it isn't natural The worst part of it is having to adjust my schedule every week from nights to days on my days off. Anyway I'm here for you girl. Hugs.....Pris

It will be hard adjusting, but I think I have figured out how I am going to do it, but its really my bodys decision. I don't drink coffee, but I did have an energy drink my first night and it really helped me. That was the first time an energy drink had ever helped me. So I might be getting them more often or something like that. | |
