| More than 500 cars stuck on WI Interstate These cars have been stuck for about 9 hrs. The Interstate is so slippery (ice under the snow) that the semis can't get up a slope in the southbound lanes and accidents have slowed the northbound lanes too. The National Guard has been called out to help the State Patrol get the traffic moving and to get them food and water. Snomobile clubs have come out to help also. They are going car by car to check on people, get gas where it's needed. Some of the Blackhawk planes have been sent to patrol the area to radio in where cars are off the highway in the ditches and can't be seen from the highway. I'm listening to this on our local TV station now. but here's a link to Channel300.com story. http://www.channel3000.com/news/15239429/detail.html |

| I think most of us who have grown up here or lived in the north for a long time always have the "Winter Emergency Box" in the boot of the car. Mine always comes out in November. I keep 2 big blankets, candy bars, a box of cereal, juice paks, ear muffs, 2 neck scarfs, 2 pr of gloves, a couple of "jugs" for emergency relief, a 10 lb bag of cat litter, a little emergency medical kit, and some flares. You just never know when you'll need it. I'm so glad to hear they are finally getting some of the cars moving. It's been on the news most of the afternoon, but now it's getting serious. |

| I hope they are all ok. I've been stuck out like that before & it can be frightening. I leave the "winter kit" in the car from Nov to April. The hats, gloves and blankets are there year round.

| They finally got the cars moving again last night. This morning the Interstate is moving along slowly. It's still quite slippery. Took me an hour and a half to get my car cleaned off this morning. Now I'm off to work after I warmed up again. I feel so badly for the families in the southern states where the tornados went through. Same storm we had but the warmer end of it. How awful for them! |

| Were they taken by surprise w/ this ice storm? Most interstates keep that melting stuff on it (some sort of liquid) and sand. I know two ice storms back, here, the interstate was at a stand still because of tons of wrecks and horrible conditions....they made sure they were on top of it this last storm!

Today they say there were thousands of people stuck in their cars and closer to 1400 cars stuck. The semis couldn't get up the hills and so the traffic just kept backing up. At midnight the Nat'l Guard counted 2000 cars on that stretch of highway. The alternate highways were in worse shape so they couldn't redirect traffic. You can believe there's been alot of flack against the State Patrol for not asking for help sooner. I'm just glad I didn't have to drive that way yesterday. The area is about 10 miles from where I live in Madison. | |
