Default Great way to cook rice

I was listening to The Splendid table on NPR a couple of Sundays ago. They mentioned that you can cook rice just like you do pasta. It comes out tender, never sticky, never burns or sticks to the pan and best of all, it cooks much faster than cooking it the traditional way. I tried it with a mix of brown and wild rices. It only took about 25 minutes or so in boiling water, vs. over an hour in my rice cooker. It will work with any kind of rice, just watch it the first time you cook it so you don't over cook it, as it cooks quickly. Then just drain in a colander. You may want to use the traditional method for sticky white rice though.

We really should have a cooking forum in here!

The only kind of rice I've ever cooked is instant rice. Boil water, dump rice in, cover and remove from heat...ready in 5 minutes

I am so going to try that! I never get the water right, even though I know it's 2:1, and it always sticks to the bottom of the pan or is under-cooked. Thanks!

My favorite rice is the organic frozen rice from Trader's - microwave 3 minutes and it's perfect! But.. for whatever reason they have been out for months... I'm down to my last box.

Whenever I cook it it sticks to the bottom of the rice cooker! I hate cleaning it. my fiance makes it though and it never sticks!

I just use my rice cooker, mine has the non-stick pot so it doesn't stick to it as much. Just have to make sure you have enough water so it doesn't burn. Also don't wash your rice in the non-stick pot or it will ruin the finish.

My sister passed on to me, her perfect (everytime) way to cook rice. Standard measurements - 2:1. Cook in microwave - 5 minutes on full power, 15 minutes on half power. I have never had it fail yet!

Also, for ease in cleaning up sticky rice pans (for that matter, potato, pasta, gravies, anything with starchy bases) soak in COLD water for a few mintues. Most pans will then clean up with almost no effort. The cold water breaks down the starches, hot water continues to cook the starches and makes a pan harder to clean. Another benefit to the cold water vs. hot - it's much easier on hands.

Try the cold water thing - it really does work - even with scrambled eggs!

I never knew you could do it that way. I'll have to try that.

I've always made my rice this way...that is how my mother did too. I have never had a rice cooker, just because it is so easy to do it this way!

Me too. Also, when you pour it out in the colander you can rinse it with hot water and it gets rid of the excess starch.
