| If you could change something in your house.... What would it be?? We designed and built our house (well the first one we lived in too)...but even with that.....there is always something we would have done differently, added, or changed...etc. So.........we are thinking (and have been for awhile) to downsize and build another house...eventually...........and I am looking for your thoughts and ideas of some things in your house that you love or hate or would do differently if you could. Like some of mine would be to have added electrical outlets in the closets and one of those in wall ironing boards in the master closet. This way, we could plug in and iron clothes there (since I seldom do it in the laundry room because it is downstairs)...and we can plug in and charge our phones and other things in there...instead of being untop of our dressers. And a friend gave me this idea.... When they built their house.....under the cabinets (in the bathroom/kitchen) they put an electrical outlet and attached those clear rope lights along the underside (where no one could see it)...this way, you have a safe and easy alternative to installing track lighting and instead of a small "night light" in the bathroom, you have a nice light. Another friend, did what is called "bull nose" corners on their walls....most walls are in just straight and where they meet, are in a point...and when they do sheet rock, these corners have a metal plate over them...then the sheet rock goes up....while with the "bull nose" - rounded edges.... you don't have this...just a smooth corner...so the the paint doesn't chip off if you hit the corner w/ something. I like that idea!!! Any other ideas/tips/tricks that you would like to share w/ me....I am making a notebook with ideas!!! THANKS!!! Picture of rounded (bull nose corner) and the normal pointed corner collage-beads.jpg

| We are planning on eventually building a house as well. One thing I know for definite sure I want is lighting under the kitchen cabinets/above the kitchen counter. I want the kind you can turn on and off with a switch so it doesn't take up another outlet being plugged in. The overhead light just doesn't reach there very well, especially when you are standing there chopping and you cast a shadow over your work area. I like the idea of the electrical outlets in the closets as well! That's a GREAT idea!

| We have tons of outlets all over the house...as that was one thing we learned from our first house......you can never have too many outlets or phone jacks...as, you may move furniture, etc around.....

| I am doing the same thing right now!!!!!! We are about to start a HUGE remodeling project on our house and I keep adding to my "wishlist". I love some of things you posted. We have finished our kitchen remodel. One of the things I love that I did was I put outlets in my pantry. I keep all my small appliances in the panty plugged in and ready to use. Can opener, toaster oven, coffee pot, etc... I love this because I hate appliances crowding my counters. I want a docking cubby for all my cell phones, ipods, video camera's, etc....I just saw this in a new construction house we visited. They had this cubby cut in the wall ... in the hallway leading to the garage area. I would like to have a door on the cubby. (kinda like a cabinet door) All of our cell phones, idods, cameras, etc....are all over the house being charged. I would like to have them all in one place. Also miss from our last house ....a cubby in the shower for bath products. It was designed into the tile work ...a small little insert/cubby in the wall to hold shampoo, conditioners & soap. I am now having to use one of those racks and I hate those. Another item on wishlist: Lights that automatically turn off when you close closet doors. Had this before too and miss it. No one in my house turns off closet lights. I have lots more....will post later. Gotta go for now. Can't wait to hear others ideas. Great idea for thread!!!

| I love those kitchen cabinet drawers that pull out and upwards...anything that can help organize a kitchen better - especially lighting. I LOVE heated floors in bathrooms! The pull odwn ironing board in the closet is a great idea! Nothing will ever be perfect and we can always improve - I guess thats the fun in it! |

| I was thinking about doing some sort of "baking area" in the kitchen too...I seen that on a house show....there is a big area of counter top space for rolling out dough and having cooling racks....there is are doors between the counter and cabinet (cabents for baking stuff) where you can hide the mixer, etc. I like the idea of having the area (like you mentioned) for plugging in the small appliances in the pantry....that is one thing that I will definitely change....our kitchen pantry....ours is too small....and I need room for all the things that I don't use often...like the crockpot, etc.......

| Oh that is something else I had in a previous house I lived in that I dearly miss. There was a marble insert in the kitchen counter that was for working with dough on. It was GREAT!

| We are planning to build a house soon and I love these ideas. I some ideas too. 1. kitchen cabinets...instead of a door I wan't a drawer for my pots and pans. I want 2 long and deep drawers like on the bottom somewhere maybe under the wall oven and that is where I will put pots and pans.....I hate getting on my knees and reaching back and digging to find what I want. My dad is a cabinet maker and I told him what I wanted and he said he had never heard of that and I have never seen that before either. 2. BIG walk through panty with a big freezer inside. 3. a room just for the dogs, tile floor, with a doggie door that goes into the back yard with a small fenced area just for pottying and a roof over it so if it is raining or wet they will stay dry and clean. Of course they will have a bigger fenced yard just for playing outside. 4. if all the bedrooms are upstairs, then the laundry room goes upstairs. But I think I want the master bedroom on the bottom floor. 5. I want a 2 car attached garage and a HUGE detached garage with a concrete shower and a washer and dryer. My husband works with dozers and stuff and gets really muddy sometimes and when he mechanics on his equipment he gets greasy and dirty so when he comes home, he has his own garage so he doesn't get mud in mine, he has his own shower so he doesn't get the house shower dirty and he has his own w&d so his nasty clothes wont stink up the house so when he walks through the house doors he is clean and this will make me very happy, and when I am happy, everybody is happy.... We can park the RV, boat, motorcycle and atv in the big garage too. 6. I want the family room to be open to the kitchen. I want the family room in the back of the house, and I want to have french doors in family room leading to a covered back patio with a fireplace and big comfy charis and couches. 7. a BIG walk through linen closet. lots of shelves up to the ceiling for towels and sheets and comforters. I also want a HUGE walk through bedroom closet with lots of storage. 8. In my laundry room I want to have lots of room and storage. I want to have big long drawers that pull way out and have hangers for linen bags and that is where my dirty laundry will go. there will be 4 of them, 1)whites 2)darks 3)lights 4)linens. 9. a really big attic for storage for Christmas decorations and other seasonal decor and just old stuff that you don't use but you want to keep. I know there is tons more that I am leaving out but I will spare you my book... |

| I would want a kitchen that is open to a family room. I like to cook at night, but I normally don't because it makes me feel like I am separated from the rest of the family. |

| We have a lazy susan type cabinet in the corner/bottom kitchen cabinet - it actually comes in handy. AND we have one big cabinet at the end that has the slide out (shelves)...I love these....so easy to get to items in the back. Also...bathroom....a must have...two sinks w/ two sep. cabinets. We didn't have this in our first house, but this house we made sure we did.....I like having his/hers space in the bathroom!!! We did a laundry chute in this house, but our next one will be just one story (hopefully)....and I still want a big laundry room. I am also thinking of doing a "mud room", so all the shoes, etc...go there when we come in...instead of tracking everything in thru the front door. Another thing....this house has two fireplaces and the 2 central heat/air units... our first house at the central heat/air, but also and an outdoor wood "furnance"....that blew the good warm wood heat thru vents to each of the rooms...it was expensive, but sooo worth it. I want that again.....no ashes and bark and wood mess in the house.....but still have the good wood heat! (ours had a generator on it too...so even though it was electric, we never went w/o heat).

| No matter how often you build your dream home, there is always something you end up missing . . . .so this is indeed a good way to plan . .taking notes about all the ideas. Here are some of my ideas to share. When we built our home, hubby did all the wiring for the music. He even did it so the there is outdoor music if we are on our deck. Each room has a control to adjust the volume. Have a built in vacuum cleaner . . . .it will probably cost about the same if not just a tidbit more as compared to those pricey cleaners like Rainbow. I know I spent less having the pipes and outlets installed and then buying the unit online . . . I love to entertain so I made sure my pantry was HUGE. At my old house my spare freezer was in the garage, now I have it in my pantry so it is readily accessible to my kitchen. Hubby also did the upper lighting and underlighting as well as inside lighting on cabinets in my kitchen so he had the builder install outlets above the cabinets but controlled though a switch. You can always use cabinets so for our master bathroom, instead of one huge mirror above our sinks, there is a cabinet right in the middle and there are outlets outside as well as inside. His razor is plugged to an outlet inside the cabinet so it is not clutter free but always ready for use. Oh he also did all the computer wiring for all our computers as well as security alarm so whatever you hubby can do, make sure he does it before the dry wall gets installed. oh he also has control of outdoor lighting (holiday lights) from our coat closet. And make sure have the builder put outlets close to the roof so you won't have all these cords hanging oh do you know that having matching wood panel on your fridge cost less than having it all stainless . . . oh and definitely separate clothes closet (his and Hers) . . .Ours originally was just one big one but last minute decided to split it 75/25 so we each can do what we want with our closet. Hubby is the neat freak so he does not freak out at my messy closet. If I think of more I will let you know . . . Last edited by Tiger's Mom; 01-01-2008 at 10:41 AM. |

oh we wanted a dual fireplace too but a chunk of our money went to ground digging as we did not realize our land was sitting on a huge rock. It cost us 10K just to get it drilled . . I tell you everyday I pray it was done as I was paying $500/day of drilling oh one more thing, we have a main floor and a basement but our main floor has everything we need until we grow old so no going up and down the stairs (kitchen/laundry/office/living-dining room, our bedroom and powder room.
