| HUGE QUESTION: Need some advice :) SO... I'M GRADUATING from UC Davis in March... I'm nervous! QUESTION: How do I go about applying to companies? I'm completely clueless on how to get my foot in the door at publishing houses/companies or advertising agencies or newspapers/magazines. I will be graduating with highest honors in English and a psych minor. I don't have much internship experience (none) but really great recommendations. I really want to get into print media of some sort... but I also have my CA real estate license and may want to try that out as well if I can't get a job right away. Anyone know how I should go about applying prior to graduation? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

| Hi and Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! Although my of my career was spent in educational administration, I believe that you need to work through your university contacts. Your references, your professors in the field, professional organizations, and the university career office are your best best. You will need to get your resume in order, again with the help of professors and people who are in the field, so that it will help get you that interview you are looking for. Lots of good luck to you! Merry Christmas! |

| Well, first I would make sure your resume is in order. Make sure you do a really nice job and have a few people proof read it for you. I would also have a cover letter which you might have to change depending on the position you are applying for. It is true to an extent that old saying "it's not what you know but who you know" so if you know anyone out there who might be able to help, now is the time to ask. I would send your resume and cover letter out to as many people as you can find and then try to follow up with a phone call. Let them know that what you might lack in experience, you will make up for with an eagerness to learn and desire to work hard. Good Luck and congratulations! |

Great advise! I know my university, as I'm sure most others, have a career center. They will help with resumes and make it in tip top shape. Network, network, network! Thats our motto in business school. Just talk to professors, friends that have graduated in your field. You just never know, one of your professors may know someone that can help you get into the door of a company you want. You also might not get the certain job you want at firt, but alot of times (at least in business) your resume may get passed onto another dept that may be better suited for to start off. Good luck!

| First off, what type of media are you wanting to be in? Narrow it down to what you want. There is so much that you can do with that degree, that you need to narrow down your options. After you decide, then you need to have a 'second string' back up plan so to speak. Have a good resume directed at the job you are applying for. This will probably change with each job, but have a basic one that you can change and save for future reference/editing. Also, a good cover letter, again directed at the job, is a must. References should be prepared, and printed on the same paper, same font ect...BUT, those you only hand out upon request. Never just hand them over, a little too eager. Also, when you go in, try to make an appt with the hiring director. After your interview/initial meeting, send a thank you letter. It makes them dig your resume out and remember who you are! Hope that helps ya.

| Congratulations on all your hard work!!! Don't sell yourself short just because you don't have experience. Most positions these days require a degree to even look at someone. When you put together your resume, make sure to think of all the campus activities you participated in. They will demonstrate organizational, time management and people skills. Since you already have your real estate license, you might just want to start with that and garner some experience. Putting together sales flyers is print media as well. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be fabulous!!!!

| I would go to your University's job placement office. Most universitys have that and they can help place you in a job, find internships, refine your resume and teach you interview skills and give you tips. Most University's also have an online job database and companies post when they have openins and it gives you all the info to apply. You can also look in your local paper, talk to the teachers in your department and see if they know of any openings. You can also try online job websites like careerbuilder.com. but just remember that for most of those jobs there are 100+ other peoplle applying for the same one. You can also try craigslist.com.. that's actually how I found mine and I love it! If you need any help or more info, PM me and I'll try and help you out. I was in the same boat as you this past summer, but I got lucky and found a great job And just last week I got called about a job that i applied for months ago! lol. Sometimes it just takes time. Don't give up! And also, the realestate is a good idea if you don't find anythign right away, as you can do that for a few months and still look for something else Good luck in your search!
