| All You Vegans and Vegetarians...Give Me Some Info Please Hi all--- With Thanksgiving just around the corner (uh, tomorrow...) I am reading about a few people who are vegans or vegetarians and what they will do for Turkey Day. Not mentioning any names in case y'all don't want them mentioned, but I know of at least 3 YTers that are either vegans or vegetarians... Anywho, what I'm wondering is...how did you start doing this? What are your reasons? Do you take supplements or vitamins of any kind to help with diet? I have never been a huge meat fan, but THEN AGAIN, there are times when I CRAVE a burger (probably makes y'all sick ) or what have you. Also, with Turkey Day and Christmas just around the corner, don't you MISS that Turkey and Ham and such? Granted, I probably eat turkey 3 times a year and ham like 5-10, so it's no big thing. But it just seems like the holidays would be tough for me ?? Anyway, I just want any basic info you all are willing to give me on any and all aspects of vegan or vegetarian. BTW, I LOVE dairy so there's no possible way I could be a vegan. EVER. But please give info on them! I would so appreciate it!!

| My daughter is a huge animal lover and never really cared for meat so decided to become vegetarian. She didn't eat meat for a year and then started making exceptions for bacon and pepperoni- you know thae really healthy meats. I very recently (maybe two months) decided to give up meat after reading a book called Skinny Bitch. I was literally horrified by the treatment of the animals and that was pretty much it for me. I haven't touched meat since I closed that book. My daughter decided to join me and gave up her pepperoni and bacon. I am surprised that I actually don't miss meat at all. I am not sickened that you crave a burger sometimes because I used to LOVE burgers. If you are interested go to www.vegcooking.com and you can order a free vegetarian starter kit which is a little magazine. It is from PETA but don't let that scare you off- it's got great information and recipes. Be prepared though because I don't think anyone could read it and ever eat meat again.

| Hey! I have been a vegeterian for almost 8 years now, but i eat seafood like its going out of style! I believe what most people call me is a pescaterian (sp?). My reason is a very long story, needless to say I dont wan't to gross anyone out but for me its because the smell of meat is consistant from death, to processing, to cooking and eating. I just cant take it. So there is the reason part. I love my diet beacuse it is very healthy. I do take supplements and have regular check ups with my dr for routine labwork. It is important to have your dr involved if you are thinking of changing your diet drasticly. I eat a lot of beans and nuts for protien and yogourt and dairy for calcium. I get alot of great heart healthy omega 3 from fish, just be careful with fish as some has a very high mercury content. Veggies and fruit are my best friends! I have to be careful not to eat too many carbs, it's easy to get carried away with pasta and grains, believe me! I have had a few bites of red meat in the past few years, if someone does not remember that I don't eat meat and they go through the trouble of fixing something nice I will be polite and have a bite or two (smothered in some kind of sauce!) but I will absolutley not touch chicken! I hope I have answered some of your questions, I am a health nut but I wont sacrifice flavor, I still eat real mayo and sour cream, no fat free! But I have come up with a lot of ways to cut fat and calories. If you have any questions just let me know, I will do my best to answer! Happy Thanksgiving! |

Thanks for that link...I think I may order that and just read it...and as you say, it'll maybe convince me to never eat meat again. And PETA doesn't scare me at all..lol..one of my friends from HS is a member (correct term?) of PETA. Thanks again, Nikki. I'm def going to check it out, and I hope you have a great meat-free Tofurkey Day tomorrow

Interesting...never knew there was a "group" called pescaterians...you learn something every day (and today I'm learning A LOT ) My reason is a very long story, needless to say I dont wan't to gross anyone out but for me its because the smell of meat is consistant from death, to processing, to cooking and eating. I just cant take it. So there is the reason part. Yeah, there's just something about meat that grosses me out. I really don't like chicken esp. or steaks (VOMIT!)...chicken because I'm afraid of the icky parts and it's always dry and steaks because they're just NASTY! lol I love my diet beacuse it is very healthy. I do take supplements and have regular check ups with my dr for routine labwork. It is important to have your dr involved if you are thinking of changing your diet drasticly. If I do decided to do this, I'll def contact my doctor and get advice because it is a MAJOR change! Yes, my four favorite thing are pasta, dairy (MILK, CHEESE, YOGURT, SOUR CREAM...I LOVE IT ALL! lol), fruits, and veggies. There are very few fruits and veggies I don't like, and I could eat them all day... I have had a few bites of red meat in the past few years, if someone does not remember that I don't eat meat and they go through the trouble of fixing something nice I will be polite and have a bite or two (smothered in some kind of sauce!) but I will absolutley not touch chicken! I see what you mean about trying to not be rude...makes sense... I hope I have answered some of your questions, I am a health nut but I wont sacrifice flavor, I still eat real mayo and sour cream, no fat free! But I have come up with a lot of ways to cut fat and calories. If you have any questions just let me know, I will do my best to answer! Thank you so much for all your great info! It truly did help me out, and I'll def PM you if I have specific questions! Thanks again, and I hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving as well

| I have been a vegetarian for almost 10 years now. I started when I turned 13. I was never a very big meat eater growing up. I truely just hate the taste and the fat. It just grossed me out I did love boneless chicken though but couldn't stand the veins that would sometimes be in the chicken. I do take regular vitamins daily. I don't miss it at all. My fiance is a meat eater so that is kind of hard but whatever I make him, I make for myself as well but with fake meat. I love the morningstar products at the grocery store. The Quorn, Smart Diet (I think that is what it is called) and Amy products are good too. The only hard thing is going to resturants. It seems to be getting better lately but when I first became vegetarian all I could eat was salad and grilled cheeses. I have not read skinny bitch yet but have been meaning too. I could never give up my dairy though. I buy organic milk and eggs but I just love my ICE CREAM!!!! hehe.

You're welcome. I meant to also say as far as your nutrition concerns go- I did research vegetarian dietary requirements thoroughly when my daughter first became a vegetarian. She was only 11 at the time so I was very concerned but I found that as long as you eat a healthy balanced diet you will not have any vitamin/mineral deficiencies. The only thing you will not get in a vegetarian diet is B12 but it is added as a supplement to so many things that it really isn't a problem. It's actually easier for your body to process vegetable protein than meat protein and one study I read even said that animal protein inhibits the body's absorption of calcium and in this study they found that vegetarian women had stronger bones than meat eating women.

| Do any of you get harassed by family or other people b/c you are vegans or vegetarians? I've came very close to changing, but I haven't yet. I try not to eat a lot of meat anyway. The reason I asked if people sometimes bother you about it is because I only eat organic food. I've been this way for about 2 years. I refuse to eat at McDonald's or at other fast food places. Lol. Anyway, my friends and family always complain to me because its such a hassle for them. Mainly my parents give me heck about it. They always complain because they have to go to a separate store to get food for me. They get really upset during the holidays because my mother will have to cook regular food then organic food for me. Even when I buy the food, she still will complain about it. It really bothers me. Does anyone have any ideas how to get them to stop? |

| I have been vegetarian since I was around 12 or 13. A friend of mine's mother was very against eating meat and was one of those types that used shock to get people's attention. So she explained to us what exactly went on in slaughter houses, and showed us pictures of some of it (my parents were NOT HAPPY). That did it for me. I've gotten a little better over the years. DH and the kids like meat and I cook it for them sometimes - usually though DH has to cook it himself. I cook with dairy products sometimes, and I'm OK with Sushi occasionally. However, I plan on switching to a completely raw vegan diet next year for health reasons.

My mom always stressed when my daughter visited. I used to tell her it is not a big deal- she'll eat the sides and veggies or just pick up some Boca Burgers. I don't know why but she really worried about feeding my daughter. As I mentioned I am a new vegetarian and if you read my other thread you know I was stressing about Thanksgiving. After talking with my husband I have decided to just relax a bit. I don't use butter or cow's milk but it wont kill me to eat it one day. I didn't buy it so I'm not contributing to the industry. I also buy mostly organic but I figure it isn't going to kill me to eat non organic at other peoples' homes or at restaurants . I really don't want to make a big deal around other people like, look at me, look at me, I eat differently than you do.

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | I want to start being a vegetarian. The only kind of meat I'll eat is redmeat, which is not healthy anyway haha. But I would imagine its not healthy to just suddenly stop eating meat. Is there a way to go about it, or is it ok to just stop eating it?
