| How to get fire going in fireplace? Anyone have any good tips on getting a fire going in the fireplace? We just had some wood delivered (all oak, should be dry), and we can't seem to get a fire going no matter what! We started with small pieces and newspaper, and then added small logs after it got going, but we can't get the flames, we just get smoldering logs, and they don't burn all the way. We've tried it twice-I've never had this problem before!!!! Any advice?

Our Blessings R Many Donating Member | Is your wood good and dry? I always roll a lot of newspaper up into a ball and then place kindling real small pieces of wood on top of the newspaper and then pour a little bit of the wood burning starter onto that and then get it going real good then add smaller piece of wood, after its going then add the larger logs. The reason the logs are smoldering could be that the wood isn't dry and also you need to get the coals going from the starter wood to get the other going good. That wood burning starter really ignites quickly so be very careful. After I once used it.....won't be without it By the way, do you happen to have an insert in your fireplace. We now use a wood stove and it is the same process as how we use to start in the fireplace. Your kindling is so important, gotta have that. |

| I use firestarters. You can get them at the grocery store. I break them in half because that's all you need and you get twice for the price. I stick one or two small pieces in the bottom of my grate thing, then I light the firestarter at both ends and set that on top. Once it's going i stick a couple of more pieces of wood on and viola. I have awesome fires. Good luck

| What do you mean "start a fire"? Newspaper? Logs made of wood? I push the button on the remote - I have a gas fireplace with a remote controlled starter I'm sorry - couldn't help it. It's got to be frustrating not to have your logs catch. Sounds like they are not completely dry yet. Time for Duraflame!

| It sounds like your wood is still too green and needs more drying time. |

| Thanks for all the responses everyone-I forgot I started this thread, and I was just cleaning up my CP today and found it, buried under all the GE threads I did end up getting duraflame fire logs-they work like a charm! I called the guy we bought the firewood from (he was also our chimney sweep, so the wood should be dry and of good quality). He recommended that we get starters too-which I already had since we were so frustrated! The wood we bought is all oak, which should burn longer and better overall than other wood-according to the guy we bought it from. He also recommended bringing it inside 24 hours before burning, in case there's something cooky going on with the humidity outside. We had a couple fires going during Thanksgiving-thanks to the duraflame starters, no prob!!!
