| Tons of retail places are hiring right now, some are for only christmas time help, but you never know and they could offer you a full time job after christmas. With retail type jobs the best thing to do is go to the ones you want to work for (make sure you are professionally dressed when you go in!) and ask if they are taking applications, do not ask if they are hiring b/c if they aren't they will usually just say no and let it be. But if you ask for an app, they will let you fill one out and keep it on hand til they have a space open. Make sure you take some resumes with you. Most retail places have so many ppl come in and ask for applications, they have a ready pile of apps to select people from and never need to put an employment add out there. Good Luck!

i used to waitress and loved it. its definately not a job for everyone, but if it is..you can really make some excellent money, in a short amount of time too!! and SladesMommy has an excellent suggestion too!! there are SO many places hiring for seasonal positions during the holidays-and if they like you..may keep you after that, if they can. check out the mall-that is the best place to find a bunch of seasonal openings-&u can kinda pick and choose, cuz there are so many stores!!

| I agree, Slade's mommy gave some great pointers! I will add on a few that I know of ~Dress for the job. Don't over do it, and def. don't under dress ~Have a good resume, a list of references available if they ask (key point) ~Make sure all resumes, references and copies of letters of reccomendation are all on same paper ~Make sure you fill out ALL spaces on an application. That is the first place they start weeding people out of the application process. If you can't fully complete an application, what else can you not do fully? ~Do not ever put "see resume" in an application block. That constitutes lazyness to a prospective employer. ~Keep all papers in a nice tidy folder or a small breif case like carrier ~Have your own pen ~Have a list of all pertinant information on hand (all past jobs, salaries, phone #'s ect) ~Fill application out and take it back in the same day. Hand it directly to the manager, never some worker. You might be replacing them, and they dont want to give you that chance. Hmmm that is all I can think of. I had to take a class for getting out of the Navy, and this was part of the info that they put out to us, hope it helps you (this was taught by a HRO manager).

| few more things i thought - Go by yourself when applying. I had a manager of a local store say that she does not hire anyone who brings along friends, parents, kids, etc when applying. Don't take in a cell phone. Go on 'off' days- tuesday- thursday. fridays and the wknds are the busiest days and managers will be more annoyed than anything if you come in on those days. Usually when you hand in the application they'll want a chance to talk to you for a few mins- some may go ahead and interview you on the spot! so be prepared

If you are going into a petstore, you want to wear a nice pair of slacks, a nice shirt, and comfortable shoes that don't make a lot of noise when you walk. I know a lot of managers find this annoying. Now if you are going to be working construction, wear khaki pants and a button up shirt and a pair of boots. You will know if you are under/over dressed. Also, nothing revealing. You never know, you may be interviewed by a woman that finds it offensive. Conservative is the best. A good resume should be one page. If you do a search for resume, there will be some different styles that come up. You need to find one that works best for you and your prior experience. Let me know if you need help, I have a little time that I can point you in the right direction. As far as past employment... YES! Put it on there! If you dont, they can fire you for falsifying your application. Put that you worked there and let the new employer know that you were let go. If it was seasonal...tell them, it was seasonal work and I was no longer needed. If you were fired for messing up, tell them, I had a few difficulties in the job, but I have learned from my experiences and feel I have moved forward. Now, YES, they can call your past employers, and the ONLY thing the past employers can LEGALLY tell the person calling is yes she worked for us. Now, do they tell more then they should. You bet. But, it is extremely hard to prove in court. This happened to a dear friend of mine on here, and I was the one calling asking if she had worked there and trying to see if they were doing anything illegal. Well, lets just say, it didn't take a lot of persuading them to get more out. Just be upfront, honest, and professional. Be smart, well groomed and confident. Things will go your way!

| Sometimes they don't call, but its better to tell the truth then for them to find out that you were lying to them. With this job I just got they didn't call my past employers, which they wouldn't have anything bad to say. But there was a lot of other info that I had to put on my application and they can find out if your lying. |

| Well I wouldn't say anything, unless they ask. But I am sure they will ask you about your previous employers. |
