YorkieTalk Newbie! | Help! My toy Yorkie has bald spots. My sweet baby Simba has a bald spot on his back about 2 inches above his tail. It is about 2 inches wide and 4 inches long. It is almost an oval shape. I have had him to our vet twice for this problem. There are some little pimples almost resembling black heads in a small area. Now I've notice he has two more little bald spots, also oval shaped but no pimples and much smaller. At 2 separate times the vet has done scrapings and has found nothing. She seems to think that it is some type of acne and suggested using a Clearasil Benzoyl Peroxide Scrub and also a benzoyl peroxide, which is very drying to his skin. I use it on him about twice a week. She has o other ideas. I have changed his diet to grain free hoping that it may be an allergy. He has been grain free for two weeks now and so far I really don't see a difference. Fortunately Simba loves the grain free dry food, biscuits and treats but not the grain free wet food. I think I will continue with the grain free of another 2 weeks. If I see no results I don't know what to do next. If anyone has any suggestions, please HELP! Where do I go from here? A veterinary dermatologist? Last edited by mrsfjl; 02-08-2013 at 05:48 AM. Reason: left something out |

YT 2000 Club Member | I don't know about the bald spots, but as far as the grain free food goes....my vet told me that it would take around 3 months to see any difference in the grain free diet. It takes that long to get the other food out of their system. Don't switch yet....give it some time. Besides in my opinion, grain free is healthier for most dogs if their is the possibility of an allergy to foods. Are you sure the bald patches are not ringworm?

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Simba's bald spots The vet did do scrapings of the area at two different times. There was nothing found. No fungus, ringworm, parasites-the scrapings were clear both times. She insisted I try the Clearasil and said if that didn't work maybe she should do a biopsy. I don't want to put him through unnecessary anesthesia, pain or discomfort. I am adamant about they allergy to grain theory after all I have read and researched. I don't mind waiting of two month to see if we get a result from the grain free since he is not uncomfortable. I love him in spite of the bald spots and am determined to find out what is causing this. |

| Is he chewing the spots? Could be hairloss from the issue.

YT 2000 Club Member | My little poodle had to be switched to Venison because she was chewing so bad on her fur. Maybe it is not just grain, it could be the meat base also. I hope you find out what it is. My dermatologist recommended the venison based food and that helped my poodle alot. I would not spend alot of money at a regular vet, I would go see a derm dr. to get to the reason for this. Sounds like an allergy to me. |

| I really do recommend a vet dermatologist. These types of things are their specialty, especially when the regular vet is not able to diagnosis. It certainly worked for my Piccolo, and on a different note, I think it can even save some money in the long run.
