| I am not Fat Just Fluffy Hi All I have a problem. My Yorkie, Daisy-Mae broke her leg when she was 3 months old. She Had surgery with a rod placed in her paw. 2 months later she had the rod removed. The leg healed well. I call her my $5,000 Yorkie. She is 3 pounds overweight. She is fed 1/2 cup of reduced fat Innova twice daily. Her treats are raw carrots. She is losing, but at a rate of an ounce a month. Should she be losing more. ????? She is not a small Yorkie. Her Mom and Dad weighed in at 9 pounds. I told the breeder that I cannot have a teacup as I have an American PitBull Terrier. When she is looking for more food Ozzy the 65 pounder will drop food in front of her. Help !!!!! I need advice |

| You may want to post this in the Yorkie Health & Diet forum. It will get more views and replys there! How much does your yorkie weigh? Did the vet say she was overweight?

| The Vet wants her to lose 3 pounds. She now weighs 12 pounds. Her ideal weight should be 9 pounds. Daisy needs to lose that weight as the vet does not want extra weight on her foot. How do I transfer this thread.???? |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Is the portion you're feeding her the guideline listed on her food? I know wellness portion was much less than that amount daily. As with humans...reduce her calories and step up the excerise.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey had to go on a diet. After a trick training class he gained an excessive amount of weight. Carrots aren’t a good diet food because of their effect on the sugar levels and insulin. I would suggest cutting the food by ¼ and adding green beans to the diet as they cause them to feel full. You may even have to cut the food by half; Joey only needed to lose a pound. You should try for a weight loss of about 1-2 ounces a week. If after the first week no weight has been lost, you can decrease the food further. We use the frozen variety of green beans because they contain no salt, and I chop them in small pieces. You could probably give about 10 of the petite variety or about ¼ cup chopped. For treats, I use his regular food, or freeze dried liver. Of course walking is the best exercise, and you can also make them run for a ball to receive a portion of their regular meal. We use all of Joey's breakfast for this, and half of his dinner meal. He really has to "work" to get fed.

| Boy did I make a mistake. She gets 1/2 cup daily. 1/4 in the morning and 1/4 cup for her evening meal. Barb |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey can only have 1/4 cup daily of the actual food, in addition he gets the green beans, and he weighs about 5 1/2 pounds. I thought I would increase his food when he lost the weight, but he doesn't keep losing he's stabilized, and the vet said his weight should never go above 5 pounds 10 ounces. As it cools off, and our walking increases, I'll probably give him a little more food. I weigh him every week before his bath so I have a pretty good idea, of what foods affect his weight the most.

| Thank You Nancy Joeys Mom I called my Vet. !/4 cup x 2 is O.K. as she is not a 5 pounder. Her Mom and Dad weighed in at 9 pounds. The Vet wants her at 9 or 10 pounds. I will be giving her string beans as you suggested. Do you warm them or take the out of the bag and leave it at room temp. I had to get a yorkie that exceeds standard as she lives with a 70 pounder. She is the alpha. She got a little hefty during training. Terriers are a little on the stubborn side. Thank you for all the help. I will weigh her weekly and keep you all updated. I warm them up in a bowl in the microwave for 1 minute; this defrosts them and warms them. I cut them into small pieces with a kitchen scissors, and I think this make them easier to digest. Funny when you said she got hefty during training, cause that's when Joey packed on the weight too. I had to keep making the treats more tempting in order to get him to do the trick. You right they sure are stubborn; they really do have a mind of their own. Now I just use his regular food or a small portion of green bean for treats and can train him with that. Good luck!
