| I had trouble with matting and it got really bad. I posted a thread under "training" called "grooming" I got alot of good advice. People here told me about what brushes to use. I also learned not to bathe them without first brushing them or the mates will get worse. My baby got so bad I had to have him shaved. GOOD LUCK!! |

| I had trouble too with our first Yorkie.. I didnt know to brush before the bath and Ellie Mae got terrible! I took her to the groomer the first time and asked a ton of questions.. From then on I brushed and combed her daily.. If the knots were bad I did a little at a time... I also use a conditioner now in a spay bottle mixed with a little water.. Just to make them damp.. that seems to help alot as well and helps the hair not to break. Joy |

| Hi, my sister was having so much trouble with her Yorkie's coat that she decided to get a "puppy cut". With working, the kids, and a husband, she is finding it much easier now. Her Yorkie's coat would mat-up right after you combed her out. I think the type of coat makes a difference too. Think about it, maybe a puppy cut is the way to go.

| What kind of brush are you using? you should do the arm test to see how harsh your brush is. also i agree with the above poster.. to dampen the hair so it doesn't break.. remember yorkies have hair not fur! i've heard that a good brush for these types of dogs are brushes with no pins on the ends, but not the slicker brush (this is for the body) and the arms/legs/feet you can use the slicker brush.. I personally LOVE Chris Christensen's products... http://www.chrissystems.com/tiptest.htm Why Proper Brushing is So Important. Other than the primary function of brushing or styling hair, hair brushing serves several other important purposes; cleaning and massaging the skin, and stimulating the release of a beneficial oil called sebum. Sebum is released by the sebaceous gland at the base of the hair follicle as a result of the gentle hair tugging action caused by brushing. Brushing the hair cleans the hair shaft, follicle, and skin by removing trapped scale, dirt, and oils. Brushing also distributes the Sebum, coating, lubricating, and protecting the hair shaft resulting in a healthy glow or sheen and more flexible hair. Because sebum protects and moisturizes, regular brushing results in hair that is healthier, more manageable, and easier to style. All of Chris Christensen Systems brushes are well balanced and easy to use. Handles are designed to ensure comfortable grip and use. You May be losing More Coat Than You Realize. Thick, full coat means a healthy coat. When the coat is thick and full, it's usually healthy, shiny, full of volume and body...most everything you want in a great-looking coat. By using the right tools you can reduce excess coat loss (including thinning, breakage and splitting). Much excess coat loss CAN be prevented. Coat loss has three causes. 1. medical conditions, 2. genetic & hereditary factors and 3. physical or chemical damage to the coat from bleaching products, blow dryers and inferior grooming tools and all around improper styling techniques. While some coat loss cannot be solved, the majority of excess coat loss caused by breakage can be prevented by treating the coat right and using proper products and tools. |

On his hair...if it's that matted - I'd suggest like someone said getting a bottle of Johnsons No More Tangles - it's in the baby section at most stores - spray it on and saturate your baby - then try to work out the tangles.... and then bath him....T HEN - you might want to get some Ice on Ice from Chris Christensen Systems - the link is above ...to use for everyday - it really helps PREVENT matting - my girls don't wear any clothes without getting a spray first ....Good luck ...I would suggest maybe a puppy cut and start fresh though - then you can prevent tangles daily as his hair grows back...It can be alot of work keeping them long. | |

| johnson products are affordable for me. and a puppy cut for my male is easier to manage.. I do let my females hair grow long between breeding.. when shes about to whelp i do the puppy cut.. its easier to manage and not as messy and i hope more comfortable for her.. I'm not trying to promote products. and I don't show my dogs.. that probley does make a big difference.. I use what works for me. everyones opinion is different and I respect that.. good luck..jenny |
