Default Okay I may be nervous...any regrets out there???

I have a baby boy coming home Thursday and this is my first Yorkie ever. I originally thought I wanted a Maltese but when I came across a website with Yorkies on it, I immediately fell in love. I have looked at several sites of info but none with the amount you can find in here! Thanks for the advice! I have had several dogs growing up as a child but never as small and delicate as a Yorkie. I am getting nervous. I didnt know they can be hard to train. Also, I am afraid of spoiling it. I want it to be an obedient dog but I want to love it and cuddle it.

So my question is...are there any regrets where the Yorkie is concerned? Help me out please. Put my anxieties to rest...

No, Tinkerbelll is my first yorkie and I love everything about her, she is spoiled and about 99.9% potty trained which means she will pee inside if she has to You wont regret it, I have 3 small children and although she is tiny (3 1/2lbs) she can still keep up with the kids but I have thought my kids to be careful with her.............Dont worry just enjoy your new baby. I also have a maltese and he is a doll, I dont regret getting him either he is different from my Yorkie though, more lay back and calm

They truely are! And I own/compete w/ several different breeds.
I think that if you're a disiplined dog owner and can make corrections as needed and give praise when needed- a nice balance, then you shouldn't have any issues! The Yorkshire Terrier is just that- a TERRIER, there is a toy side, but overall I think that fiesty steriotypical attitude is in all of our Yorkies, or at least it should be.
Loads of play and in doing so, teach him the rules of engagement. In all honesty, I think that you'll be very pleased w/ your new fur baby assuming he's healthy, because the Yorkie temperment/manarisims is just the best- VERY rewarding! Just like my signature says: Big things come in small packages!

I'd consider you begin looking into training facilities in your area now, before you get your kid. That way if issues arise, you're not alone! And you've always got us here on YT!!

I've owned lots of different kinds of dogs(as a kid we'd rescue dogs from the animal shelter pretty often). You name it, we probably had one. I can honestly say that now after owning a yorkie, I'll always own a yorkie.

In the small breed type of dog I've had a s**tzu, pekingese, chihuahua, pomeranian, mixes and been around poodles. Yorkies are the best.

The only disadvantages so far have been the watery eyes(which would be even harder with a white maltese) and the fact that since my girl was small, I had to carry her down the stairs for the first 7 months of her life. She's on her way to 8 months old and can now go down them finally.

I have always wanted a doberman...when my bf finally agreed to let me get a dog...the only condition was that it was a small one (so the doberman was out)...the Yorkie was the only small breed I really liked and now that I have Lady I have absolutely no regrets, I love her to death...

hi tassibo and welcome the only regret i have about yorkies is that i can't have more!!! they are a little tough to house train but they are small dogs they have small bladders so they have to go out much more than a bigger dog would! they are very smart super cute dogs everyone should have at least one ! welcome to yt also!

Sissy is 99% housebroken and hands down the single best thing to happen to my life in the past year she has been with me. She is definitely spoiled, but does also listen (most of the time), though she doesn't do tricks other than looking cute!!! I cannot imagine my life without her!!! No regrets at all and I can't wait to get another!!!

Toby is a year old now and my first yorkie and my first MALE!!!! Can't give him the belly rubs like our female He is a lot more than I expected. He is such a terror(terrier).....but he is still such a puppy and we've only had him six months. He's had three homes in six months and this is where he is going to stay. He was so calm when we went to see him but once he settled in.....we've had a blast with him! Took me about three weeks to get him completely housetrained. He is so different than our maltese and they get along great. She is alittle more gentle when they play......he's a real rough houser but she has a few pounds on him so he knows his place.lol But I'm sure he'll calm down as he ages......we all do! Just enjoy the new delight of your house!

I don't want to scare, you because I too was in your shoes, thinking I had made a mistake, even before I brought Millie home. And I really thought I made a mistake (and even had thoughts about giving her away about 3 or 4 months after I got her)because house breaking was a monumental task requiring every bit of my effort and she required so much attention in the begining!

But....... (and this is a big but).... after about 6 months old, we were making some good head way with potty training and I could tell she had entered a better stage in her little puppy life. She wasn't into everything, she understood the house rules, we had our routines and she was following them. About 6 1/2 to 7 months she was 100% potty trained and it was even better! I was finally able to relax and really enjoy her. She became more intergrated with the family, she was less maintenance and more fun. At 1 year old I really noticed a big difference in her demeanor and she was less the puppy and more the adult. And that was even better!

My husband and I just love her to death and yes she is spoiled rotten, but she has rules to follow too. So, I say this because the longer you have your little one, the better it gets. Having a puppy is like having a new born, it's a lot of work in the begining, but so worth the effort, because you end up with a such a joy in your life! But you really need to put your best foot forward in the begining, because once they are potty trainined and can run independently because they understand and follow "the rules", you really have the best little family member you will ever want. Cute, adorable, so full of life and the enjoyment of life, curious about everything and everyone, just the best little personalities! So happy all the time!

I have 3 dogs chihuahua, pomeranian, yorkie. They are all 3 different as can be. My chi sleeps all day and night if possible, pom plays and gets into as much as possible, and Lily our yorkie, well she is all of 2 lbs. and think she is the biggest of the bunch(she isn't the pom is 10 lbs.). Lily came into our family in August so I am a new owner as well and this forum has taught me a LOT. Lily is our little spit fire, rotten as can be yet sweet as sugar too. I call her my sugar pie. She would chase and play with my pom all day if she could. Whether he knows it or not she is his boss, takes his toys, jumps on his back, and holds onto his bushy tail while he runs through the hall(that is the funniest sight). There isn't much she can't figure out, so now I know yorkies are pretty darn smart! She is a ball of energy, but when she poops out she drops like a fly. The best part is she wants to crash on me and cuddle, and I have to admit that is one of the best parts of my day. There is nothing like a yorkie on your shoulder where you can hear little breaths and get kisses in between. She has been doing great on her pottying , but can have an accident if I don't watch. She sleep through the night from 10 pm-10am, better than a new born baby! She has done that since I got her at 8 wks., and that is very unusual. We have had no health problems, and for her size that is rare. I am so greatful I found a wonderful, experienced breeder. Our whole family is so glad she came into our life, she brings us lota of laughter and YORKIE KISSES!!

No regrets... I would be lost without my boy. I had a girl for 16 years and when I was ready for another baby I knew I wouldn't be happy with any other breed than a Yorkie.

NO REGRETS!!

I have two yorkies and a pekingese. My peke is almost 12 and has literally grown up with me. I was 14 when I got him and now I'm 25. He is my little prince and I never thought I could love another dog like I do him but then I got these crazy little yorkie girls. I absolutely love the yorkie breed. I got Trixie in January and she has been a joy from day one. I get tears even thinking of the first moment I saw her. Such a friendly happy go lucky little girl. I loved her so much that I became obsessed with the yorkie breed and then came my other baby girl Pia. Your going to love your baby and will probably feel bad for being nervous about him. Try not to worry things will work out great!!

All three of my furbabies are spoiled rotten! They even have their own bedroom and keep an eye on you when your in it. They only share with each other, LOL!! Just kidding they love everyone and sure love to give kisses.

The good things about your yorkie will far outweigh the bad. They are so darn cute that you just can't help but love them to pieces.

I don't think regrets and yorkie belong in the same sentence! Potty training is difficult for Rocky, but I would never regret getting him. All the love from your yorkie will make up any inconviences in no time!
