| i just couldn't leave him.. this is my first post on this forum. i just thought this story should be shared with other dog lovers. first of all, my name is mikey and i'm a 20 year old college student who LOVES dogs. i've been wanting an inside dog, either a yorkie or a schnauzer, forever. but i still live with my mom, to save money for my last two years in college, and she doesnt like the idea of a dog inside, mainly because she knows potty training is so tough. i will be moving away to finish school in two months so i was planning on buying an older, already potty trained dog then. well.. last saturday i went to my town's flea market with my friend aaron. before we got out of the car i said, "do NOT let me buy a dog, my mom will crap a brick!" so we go in looking at every boothe that sells puppies. we eventually made our way to one way who had an older yorkie in a TINY cage sitting on top of all the others (it was very high up and totally not safe for a full grown yorkie, not to mention he could barely turn a circle in the cage.) well. my heart broke. and i started asking her questions about him and the only thing she knew about him was that he had had his shots. that's all. she didnt even know his name. and she thought he was potty trained because he would start barking and crying until he pottied, and then he was quiet. she had been ignoring him. and oh. i just couldnt take it. i knew it was incredibly risky buying a dog from this shady woman. she was asking $400, but i talked her down to $350. which i know is WAY too much. but.. i only had $416 in my bank account.. so every little bit helps. so i ran to the bank and i came back and bought him. i figured that if he turned out to not be potty trained or had some other severe problem that i couldnt handle in the next two months while i'm still at home, i could just take him to an official yorkie rescue group. BUT he's wonderful. he's my baby. he's completely potty trained and he's learning all kinds of new tricks. some times risks do pay off. he's is worth every penny. i named him baxter |

| Congratulations! Baxter is very pretty! Have you taken him to a vet to see if he is microchipped? Since she didn't know anything about him I just wonder if he could be stolen? For your sake I certainly hope not but I'm sure you would feel better knowing that he doesn't have a family that is heartbroken missing him! Now that I've been such a downer, let me just say that I hope everything works out and I know you will enjoy him! I think that it is wonderful that you rescued him from that cage, and most likely he came from a puppy mill and he deserves the wonderful home that you are giving him! What did your Mom say about him? Be careful or she will fall in love with him and not want you to take him to school! Oh and to Yorkie Talk!

| Mikey, Baxter is beautiful!! What a cutie pie!! In a sense, you rescued him. I wish people would not be able to sell puppies/dogs in a flea market situation like that. The new owners have no idea what kind of challenges they just took on, nor how much money they could truly end up spending with vet bills and fighting to get and keep their new pup healthy... But you got lucky!! I am so happy to hear your story! Welcome to YT, Mike and Baxter!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Awwwww.....He was just waiting for someone to love him - I just don't understand how people can treat dogs like that.....he looks just precious - Please get him a complete checkup if you can (FLEA MARKETS are notoriously bad for selling sick puppies) & I hope he lives a long happy life with you - he sure deserves it...GOOD LUCK ! ps....they had booths selling dogs at this flea market ? That's so not good to hear. I believe many of the dogs now at flea markets are smuggled into the country ? Didn't mean to spout off !! I DO want to say all the best to you and I'm really glad he's doing so well |

| i'm taking him to the vet as soon as i can afford it. which is maybe friday. i spent the some of the $50 from the $400 to get him food and such.. but i do have other bills and he's in good health. but going to the vet is my #1 priority as soon as i can. and mom... hah... i kinda told her that i'm puppy-sitting indefinately. i made up a big ellaborate story and she believed me. but tonight we were eating and i was talking about how much i'm getting attached to him and she gave me a look and said "you didnt buy him did you?" and uhg. i'm such a bad liar. i felt the deer in headlights look slowly come into my face.. WHY did she have to ask me directly? i could have danced around it but UHG she had to ask a yes or no question... well.. i lied again. what she doesnt know wont hurt her. i think she knows i'm lying. she usually does. but she knows i'm responsible and that i'll do everything i can for him. so it's all good i think. either way i'm moving out in 2 months so it's not that big of a deal. |
