| Wendell at the library Wendell has become a great therapy dog. We usually take him to nursing homes. We don't have any children ourselves, but his previous owner said that he was good with kids. So we tried out a new program at the library where kids build their reading confidence by reading to dogs. One little girl wanted to hold him in her lap while she read to him. I wasn't sure how he'd react, but he cuddled right up with her. When she finished the book, he patiently waited for her to go put it back and get a new one. When she came back, he was wagging his little tail and couldn't wait for her to read to him again. Here he is "kissing" her hand as she was reading and her little sister looking on. |

| Oh my goodness. I absolutely LOVE that. I love how therapy dogs can really boost a child's self confidence. Precious, and good for you for sharing your sweet boy with others.

| My autistic son reads to my ladies at night, when they are all crated and bedded down for the evening. He has to read out loud, or he does not remember anything he has read. I think it embarrassed him to have to do that, so I suggested he should be reading out loud to the pups at night when it was their bed time. He was worried about them not understanding what he was reading to them....he loves ham radio and AARL, and is trying to get his shortwave license....I told him they dont need to understand, they would just be thrilled to be hearing his voice, just knowing he is reading to them....so he does that.....and those dogs sit with erect ears and listen to everything he reads!!!! That thrills him to death, he thinks they DO understand what he is reading, and he remembers what he has read! I have even heard him going over test questions with each one! Two birds with one stone! | Wendell doesn't teach them to read, exactly, but he does help them. It gives them a chance to practice in a non-threatening environment. Wendell isn't going to laugh if they make a mistake, or tease them if the mispronounce a word. He just sits and listens, and the child can relax and not be as self conscious as they might be in a classroom. There is another Pet Therapy group in our area that we belong to that has studied the benefits. They meet with the same children regularly at an elementary school right after school. Their experience has shown that after a semester of reading to the dogs regularly, the children's reading skills come up an entire grade level. |
