| Meet My Puppy FRIDAY (Questions About Ownership) This is my first puppy and pet, her name is Friday. She was born on May 16, 2011 and I took her home on July 28, 2011. My first night with her I could not sleep, I ended up getting a crate that was way too big for her and the whole time I was nervous she would poop in it (which she did). I was a wreck and was texting the breeder and telling her I wasn't sure if I could be a daddy! I took her to the vet the next day and she checked out fine and her tests were all OK. I was walking through PetSmart and met an amazing trainer who showed her how to sit, stay, and come in a matter of minutes and it put me at ease that she is willing to learn and that she was a friendly and smart puppy. She rarely cries and barks now which is great although she will whine when she sees me leaving sometimes. My issues now are that she won't potty outside in the grass, I live on the 3rd floor of a condo and while it's not a long way down it is still a journey for me. I put a potty pad outside in the patio/balcony and she would pee on it and usually poop on it. Even on long walks, she waits until we get upstairs for her to do her business and usually won't poop if people are looking at her. I also noticed that on several occasions the poop was moved and sometimes smushed on the floor as if she was trying to move it or hide it. I do not know what is causing this but it can be very gross although I do clean her up always. I have yelled at her in frustration over the poop before so I am thinking she tries to hide it so she doesn't get yelled at? I also realized that she will poop in her crate over night sometimes but NEVER inside the little travel bag (I moved her in there to sleep over night and has not gone in it). She is a very social dog as my best friends have dogs! She likes to play and run around them, especially big dogs. However when walking her on the street she must say HI to everyone that passes by (although she is very cute and people always come up to her). How can I control this or teach her to sit and not get too excited with strangers? She has gotten 3 of her shots, she is going to get her 4th one in a couple weeks including the rabies shot so I think she is set there. My next decision I have to make is whether or not I should get her spayed and when I should get her spayed if I did decide to do that? I know Yorkie's produce nice puppies and can be sold for a good amount of money but as my first pet do I spay her to just do it and learn more or what? My friends have different opinions about it. |

If you want to breed your dog because "yorkies produce nice puppies and can be sold for a good amount of money" you are in for a rude awakening, as well as a lot of angry people on here. Breeders should be breeding for the betterment of the breed, not for a quick buck on craigslist. Good luck! You're going to need it!!

| Welcome to YT. Friday is adorable! I remember that overwhelming feeling when Kaji came home. I thought I had made the biggest mistake! I love my Kaji boy, and you'll learn as you go. As far as breeding, you have to ask yourself a lot of serious questions. Why are you breeding? Do you know what health tests must be done on your bitch, and the stud? How well do you know her lines? Are you willing to put in the time to learn about the sire's lines? Are you ready to lose Friday? Are you ready to raise a litter of puppies should Friday pass away during the whelp? There is a lot to breeding yorkies. Some might tell you I am making a big deal out of nothing. But in reality, all of those things happen. My boy is a poor example of the breed with behavior issues and has really bad LP. He eventually will need surgery which runs $2000 per knee. Best case scenario he won't need it but will have athritis when he's older.

| Friday is adorable! I agree to just spay her - there are too many people breeding yorkies as it is, with no thought to testing for genetic diseases or even what the breed standard is. Just love her as a pet and treat her like the princess she is!

| Little Friday is absolutely adorable! A couple of things when I read your post. Friday is still a little pup. This breed takes a little longer to potty train on average. It is best to use consistency and reinforcement to ingrain what you want them to do and where you want them to go. Losing your temper and yelling will confuse her. She does not speak human. It will take a little while for the two of you to learn to communicate fluently with each other. As for breeding, breeding such a small toy breed is expensive and has a high complication rate compared to other larger breeds. They can have problem pregnancies, requiring even more vet care than regular prenatal canine vet care. They require C-sections a good bit of the time bc of their size. This is expensive. The pups can have problem births requiring emergency vet care. The new mother could cause internal damage to the pups if allowed to chew the placenta too much, causing a trip for emergency care, if the pup can be saved. Also, the biggest deterrant to me, it could cause the death of your little precious Friday trying to bring these pups into the world. These dogs should not whelp by themselves. You will have to plan to be there helping her through her whelp, especially as she might need an emergency C section. The pups could be born with illnesses requiring them to be cared for and nursed 24/7. Please don't see the "higher price" that these pups sell for and think breeders are "rolling in the profits". This is an expensive breed to breed. The vet costs to do this correctly and ensure the health of Friday and her pups will require you to have money ready to cover these many expenses. I would spay her and enjoy her as your beautiful little girl. Congrats on your new baby. Thanks for posting her pics. We LOVE pics here!

| She is cute and has a cute name. I would spay her. You bought her as a pet and not as a money maker. I bought my Ahi because I always wanted a girl and I do sometimes get upset when everyone keeps asking me if i'm going to breed her. I don't plan to. I agree with the other posts...Yorkies take a while to potty train. Please don't yell at her and when she goes potty where she is supposed to give her lots of praises. They work really well with positive reinforcements. Welcome to YT!

| This is my first Yorkie, but not my first pet. I know how wonderful you feel having your first little precious baby, there are lots of decisions to be made. I suggest you do what I did. RESEARCH!! I thought the same thing until I realized how silly it is to take on a venture of breeding. Multiply your stress of raising one puppy by ten and see what you think. I suggest you think long and hard about this, breeding is not for the first timers I assure you! I also noticed right off the bat that you have a collar on your adorable puppy with a name tag hanging. Number one, experienced breeders will all tell you because of trachea issues with Yorkies, you never put a collar on them, especially one with something hanging on it, that's just extra weight for that fragile throat! Also, on the potty training, it's not easy! I've learned you never scold one, only sweet talk and lots of praise. The more you praise, the more they want to please you. Part of a breeders job is to have the potty training started before they sell the babies, anyone who buys one from you will expect that you have started this! I know you mean well, but discuss this with alot of experienced breeders first. Last edited by angieNchloe; 09-01-2011 at 04:10 AM. Reason: added more |

| I would definitely spay her at 6 months old, and enroll her in the puppy classes at Petsmart. This is what I did with my first female and the classes were great. They can even help you with the potty training. I would be careful of putting her out on the balcony unless it is fixed to where she can't fall off through the openongs. My female will not potty outside or if I am watching her. she is now 100% trained to use the potty pads in the laundry room. Please don't holler at her, this scares her. Be patient and reward her with treats and lots of love when she does good. It will take time she is just a baby. Please don't breed her because she could die from complications. Just make her a pet and be a good daddy. She will be much happier. Good Luck

| Hello and Welcome to YT. Friday is such a cutie Pie. Buster was always so excited to meet everyone when he was a puppy sometimes he was a little too boisterous and overwhelmed the dogs and people he met but as he got older he learned better doggie manners and calmed down. Also be careful when approaching other dogs because Friday has not learned to tell the difference between a friendly dog and one that might bite. I learned this the hard way. I would always ask people is your dog friendly this neighbor said oh yes and then the little Chihuahua bit Buster on the nose and the owner went well she does do that sometimes (REALLY!) so you have to be careful. I was lucky it was not A BIGGER DOG! Now in regards to potty training patience is the key and accept mistakes because mistakes mean that you as the owner were not properly overseeing the potty training (I know that one was hard for me too!) A lot of dogs are shy and to add to that your getting upset may have scared the dog so that she does that to hide her mistakes. See you were smart enough to think of that yourself too. Maybe you could put a screen up or a plant to give her a little privacy. You do have to be careful when socializing puppies with other dogs or going to parks or pet stores when they have not had ALL their shots because germs can be passed by poop on grass, or that is on dogs paws that they track into stores etc. I would consider taking puppy training classes once she has her shots or a home training session. Buster had some health issues when I first got him so he did not get all of his shots right away so I had a trainer come to my place. It also helped that I could address issues that occurred in my house. Just remember even if they learn a trick with every new environment means you have to reinforce the trick. Example Buster was great at learning to sit on carpet but when he was on the kitchen tiles he would not sit. I learned that to him that was different so once I retaught him the sit trick on tile he was good. The same applies to inside vs outside. As for breeding your dog that is a tough one. Many people think breeding is easy but I have seen many threads where tragic outcomes happened especially with inexperienced breeders. If you take some time to read about all that it takes to correctly breed and deliver it will overwhelm you with all the time and hard work it requires. Please do some research and I think you will agree. If you do breed her you will have to make sure that she and the other dog do not have genetic issues that you as an owner would be responsible for as part of your contract with anyone who buys a puppy. Many states have Puppy Lemon laws California does. I bought Buster and he had several health issues when I got him. Not only did I have to go through over 2 months of fear as Buster fought for his life I spent over $2000.00 on medical expenses. According to California lemon laws the people I got Buster from were liable for his medical bills for 150% of what I paid for him are you prepared to do that for each of the puppies Friday gives birth to? Or even worse the possibility of losing her during the births? Honestly I think it is better to spay her, continue to be a wonderful Daddy and enjoy your sweet baby girl. I wish you all the best Yorkies are just wonderful and she will brighten your life I know Buster has mine!

In regards to the collar thing i see was brought up, I do use a collar for ID. Not for walking. I use a harness like the other PP's were saying. Good luck!! Hope you don't mind me quoting your post then commenting thru it. Trying to hit all your questions!!
