| Is mikey a silky? We adopted Mikey from a friend a couple of years back who basically did the same from someone else. Along the way no one seems to have his papers. We love him regardless but we, like a lot of people on here, have been trying to figure out what he is without a DNA test. We've come to the conclusion that we think he is a silky instead of pure yorkie. Any one have any other suggestions or comments? |

| I agree too, I'd vote for a Yorkie with a beautiful silky coat. My Tiki is pure Yorkie and looks just like him.

| thanks Thanks, everyone. We weren't to sure because he seemed a little larger than most I have seen and his hair seemed to be very silky. I guess he picked up genetically somewhere along the way. It really doesn't matter too much we just want to answer correctly when people ask us. My fiance brought him home and I wasn't sure about the breed but like most on here I've come to have a greater appreciation for them and he is a huge part of our family now. Thanks. |

| Hi *waves* Welcome to YT! It's so hard to say. I get asked by everyone if Jackson is a Silky and your boy reminds me of Jackson. He is about 16lbs, longer than he is tall, has a bit longer muzzle, bigger/pointier ears. I still often wonder. The thing is... a well-bred Yorkie and a well-bred Silky are easy to tell apart. But because sooo many people breed Yorkies without any understanding of the standard and because they are so popular, you often get out of standard Yorkies. So just because a dog is, 20lbs for example, doesn't mean they are NOT a purebred Yorkie. And you'll often find a tiny 4lb Silky as well. The Silky was "founded" by mixing the Australian Terrier and the Yorkie so they are all related. They wanted the "terrier-ness" of the Aussie with the hair of a Yorkie basically and wa-laa, there's a Silky! The fact of the matter is that Yorkies are more common so more often than not, they are going to be a Yorkie just by looking at the chances.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I am in no way qualified to guess, but that's never stopped me before. I agree with Maxman, the longer snout makes me think silky. However, I also agree with Brit: It might be a Yorkie that has been bred away from the established Yorkie traits. The coat, as I understand, doesn't have anything to do with it. Yorkies can have silky coats without being a Silky breed.
