Default Second hand smoke

Today is a sad day in my life, I have lost my precious little dog (a Yorkie named Muffin), she died this morning at 6:30am. I sat here and watched her take her last breath. It's a terrible and heart wrenching thing to witness a one that you love with all your heart and soul die. She gave us (myself and my wife) her total commitment to love and companionship, we loved her with every fiber in our souls, and now she's gone. We have cried our eyes out for two days watching her decline to the point where she just didn't have the energy to take another breath. We've had her for 12 years.

This little dog has died prematurely, because we smoke, the little dog died from second hand smoke. I've always laughed about people being affected by second hand smoke, my parents smoked, I smoked with my son around, never saw any problems with second hand smoke with people, but apparently with little dogs it does, and therefore the possibility exists that indeed it can influence people too., but, I can definitely say that our little dog was indeed affected and died because of it. Way back, she developed a cough, nothing serious, just a cough, similar to the one the wife and I have, then she got worse, then, even worse, eventually, in the last few months, she hacked and hacked continually, but she was always energetic and ready to follow me everywhere I went, play and do anything.
Then, in the last couple of days she stopped hacking, and with that, became totally out of energy/breath, she was laboring to breathe, short breaths but had no more energy to get up and about, only enough energy to lay from one place or another, she didn't have the energy to eat, nor go outside to use the bathroom. I have sat here the last couple of days watching her go through an irreversible decline to the point where her little body just gave out and gave up. We are terribly destroyed at losing our beloved little companion. I buried her this morning.

Oh I am so sorry for your loss.

Please don't beat yourselves up, This is not something you can change, but as a tribute to your lost little one maybe you would consider quitting smoking now.

I am an ex smoker, I quit when I realized that I probably would not live to see my son grow up. It took my dad having a stroke and my mom having heart problems that pushed me in the right direction. That and with the help of God.

I am 70 now and this week my grandson graduates from high school gets his Eagle Scout award. What I would have missed

Either way I want you to know I am thinking of you and praying you get peace. Your pup is at the rainbow bridge now, no more pain able to breathe run and play..................Lynn Teasell's mom

Tx Yu for your words.
We are 76 yrs and 69 yrs old and have always been adamant about our enjoyment of smoking. To be able to sit down and have a relaxing smoke, it's just what we've always done.
I wouldn't say that we've learned a valuable lesson, on the contrary we've learned a terrible lesson. I saw it coming and often mentioned it to the wife, but neither one of us ever considered giving up our beloved custom of smoking.
It's a terrible thing, I have sworn to never have another dog after witnessing this happening to our little one, but the wife says she wants another, says we'll just have to take our smoking out on the back porch. I'm afraid we just arn't going to give up the habit, come h*ll or high water, we're stuck with the habit. It's a habit we enjoy, like a baby's passifier, it is something that keeps us occupied and nerves settled etc, etc. I know myself, if I wern't smoking, I'd be eating (something to replace the smoking) and I certainly don't want that.
We both realize what our future holds for our health but we seem to be of good health at this time etc, etc, etc. We have known and met people that had quit smoking 20 yrs earlier only to wind up in the same condition as if they had not quit = Emphazema, Oxygen hoses in their noses etc, etc .....

So, we decided to just keep on smoking anyway = going to die one way or other, might as well be happy with our sin.
The headstone I ordered for our little dog will be arriving today, and I'll place it with her where we will always remember .....

Tx Yu again for your words ..

Hello - I am very, very sorry for your loss.

I have to be honest, I'm very confused and conflicted reading your post . It literally tears me apart inside bc what you're basically describing here is that your poor little innocent dog had Congestive Heart Failure and basically she was drowning in her own body fluids (fluids getting into her lungs, which is why she coughed) -- and you're saying that you and your wife just watched it happen....watched her suffer/drown horribly for months and *months*.

She suffocated slowly. And you didn't do anything...according to your description.

Why wasn't she taken to a vet so she could be evaluated and put on CHF medications, which help SO much...?

Like I said, I'm extremely confused. You express love for this dog, yet watched her suffer an excruciatingly cruel and horrible death .

I can't get it out of my mind since reading this the other day.

Still, I'm sorry for your loss. But on the other hand, I'm incredibly shocked by what you're describing in your own words .

Wylle's Mom;
Yes we always took her to the Vet, the Vet just said she had COPD, never offered any remedy, and the only remedy I know of is oxygen in the nose.
Yep, I plead guilty, didn't know what to do other than take her to the Vet. In the last couple days the Vet offered some pills (name started with a "Per" something ' gave her two a day, one in the morning and one at night, then after three days is when she just failed, so, we have considered that the pills might have caused the end, even though the Vet said they were supposed to help her.

No matter, yes, we are guilty of negligence in the matter of letting her live in a smoke enviornment, as to trying to do anything for her, I guess we could claim ignorance, I don't know, we're smokers, and figure we're going to die smokers, But, sure didn't think our dog would be that affected, like I said, I've been around smoke all my life and it never bothered me, or her. So, we learn another life lesson.

Guilty as charged ! ! ! ! !

Wylle's Mom;
Our little dog did not seem to suffer, she was happy and loving, just had the cough, so, if she was suffering she didn't show it until the last hours. And when I saw there was something extremely wrong, indeed we took her to the Vet etc.

I did not come here looking for sympathy, only to share a sad story that maybe anyone that smokes or knows someone that smokes might read and have the time and/or inclination to do something to save their little dog.

That's all, plain and simple ................
This is my last post on the matter....

I totally agree with Wylie's Mom. If you loved your baby that much you would of took her in and had her euthanized then watch her suffer. It makes me sick because a week ago I had to put my beloved parrot of 42 years down. I noticed him not feeling well and I got on it right away. I had to make an awful decision to put him down but I was not going to see him slowly starve to death. Why do people write about love of their pet then watch it die or suffer slowly. I am in tears reading this. And yes you probably loved your dog but you knew the consequences of smoking around pets. And your wife wants another hopefully you spend some money on a vet. Susan

Look here folks, the moderator here delays my replys/posts for three days before they appear on the forum.
When our little dog did show sudden signs of failure, of course we took her to the vet, thing being, we had an appointment to put her down at 8am, however, she passed at 6:30am.
You cannot make me feel any more terrible than I have been down on my own self. It's a terrible thing that has happened and I shall not be repeating it.
Good day,
Good bye ..............................

I'm sorry for your loss. I have a friend who smokes around her dogs too. I try to get her to go outside to smoke but she considers it too inconvenient for herself so her dogs live in a house full of smoke. She has a big beautiful deck right outside of her family room where she sits all day. I feel so bad for her dogs and I can't even go visit her anymore because the cigarette smoke bothers me too much. I hope your story will reach others who maybe never thought about the harm they are doing to their pets.

Your post above (#3 of the thread) waited in the Moderation Queue for about 5 hours; your next post (#'s 6 & 7 of the thread) waited in Mod Queue for about 20 hours bc I wasn't on YT during that time.

So where are you calculating that your posts are "held" for 3 days...?

ALL posts from brand NEW MEMBERS are automatically channeled to the Mod Queue for approval - this is *only* to help us manage against the spammers who try to post here every single day.

No one is "holding" your posts back for some suspect reason, just fyi. Thank you.

Like I said in my very first post, I'm extremely sorry for your loss. And I mean that, entirely.

But when you say in your very first post that this poor dog "eventually, in the last few months, she hacked and hacked continually" - that, to me *is* suffering quite a bit....from undiagnosed and untreated Heart Failure - it's a horrible kind of death, believe me.

Since you're holding yourself accountable for all of this, I can't help but think you really did learn something huge and life-altering from this experience -- and for that, I am grateful - and you have my respect for being willing to learn and grow from this. Some people would not, believe me.

I honestly don't mean to further hurt your feelings - I don't like hurting people. But I just couldn't say nothing after reading your first post and how the death was described. I apologize if my words hurt you, but I do still stand by them.

I'm genuinely encouraged to think that your next dog won't have to go through this, and I think it's big of you to be accountable for some of this.

Again, my sympathies for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You made a good decision in deciding to not get another dog. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I have ever done. As you acknowledged, you have decided to continue to smoke.

Rip.

So very sorry you you & your wife. Muffin is playing hard crossing rainbow bridge with all the Yorkies who left us way too early, mine leaving my heat broken at 7 years old.
She loved you with all her soul.
