| Anyone from Oklahoma? Good morning; I'm Lexy's mom and need a bit of legal info if anyone can help. Lexy is due in about 10 days. I have not sold any pups EVER in my lifetime. I do plan to sell these. However, I have been trying to research laws in Oklahoma governing the sale of dogs, anything to do with breeders, buyers rights, ect. I can't find anything except vicious dogs, dog bites and dogs that chase livestock! Does anyone know where to find the info I need? Thanks, Jeanne |

| Oklahoma Legals Well, I called the breeder where I bought Lexy and asked her about Oklahoma laws. There are none to regulate how I care for my dogs, or sell them, or guartantee them, or.... Mind boggling! That's rediculous! No wonder there are so many puppy mills in Oklahoma. In my search I found that Vicious dogs must be controlled. Owners are liable for dog bites. The owner must provide food and water. Property owners can shoot a dog who chases their livestock. There are leash laws. And one cannot allow a dog to run loose in cities over 200,000. And then NOTHING!!!! Preposterous! So where do I go to get involved. Jeanne Last edited by PrairieGirl; 07-31-2005 at 09:54 AM. Reason: add info |

| I am a small kennel breeder in MO, and I think that unless you have several litters a yr, you would be considered a "hobby breeder", and the only rules would be the ones agreed to by you and anyone adopting your pups. They should be dewormed, vacinated, tails docked, dew claws removed, and weaned from the mom. Any puppy should be eating dry puppy kibble prior to leaving the mom. Hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help further. Oh yes, of they are registered, AKC, APRI, ACA, UKC, etc. you must apply for a litter application so the pups can be registered. Rizzi |

| Oklahoma Legals Oh yes, I am just a "hobby breeder." We have always had dogs and have given away several but do not ordinarily sell them. Even when we give them away we do the vet stuff and make sure they are eating well. This is our yorkies 2nd litter, but she only had one the first time and he went to older grandchildren. But, I thought if I sold them I should cover myself with some kind of contract. Something like 48 hours to have them vet checked, ect. I thought I'd look at Oklahoma laws and try to draw up my contract accordingly. I guess it just blew me away that there are NO laws governing the sale of dogs in Oklahoma. Nothing to protect the buyer or the seller OR THE DOG for that matter. I think this is outrageous! It is no wonder that Oklahoma is one of the worst states for puppy mills. It makes it easy for me to sell a dog and specify anything I want or don't want but certainly does nothing to regulate sales or protect the dogs. Sorry, this just got me on my soap box. I thank you for taking the time to answer me. Jeanne Quote:

| I think a contract is a good idea. We bought Brody from a breeder in Choctaw and we did sign some kind of contract. She gave us 3 days to take him to the vet. If you don't want people to breed your puppies, you can add that to the contract as well. You can pretty much put anything in your contract. I don't know anything about contract law, but if somebody signs something, they are more or less responsible for what they signed. So even though we don't have very many laws, a contract is a good way to make your own rules. Oklahoma dog laws are outrageous!!! We live in the country and we run into so many dog problems. For example, if a dog is on your property, animal control will not come remove the dog from your property. They say you live with it or you shoot it!!! That's what they told us! Even if the animal is aggressive, they said they won't deal with it - you just have to shoot it. We also found recently that a friend of ours has neighbors who pretty much run a pitbull puppy mill. They keep their dogs on chains all day and the dogs can get within about 2 feet of each other, but no closer. So they bark all day and night. When our friends went to talk to them about the noise and about a pitbull who continues to come onto their property, they said that they only have their dogs for breeding. Our friends said that the female is constantly pregnant and is not kept in very good conditions. No wonder pitbulls become so mean! Our friends aren't comfortable with roaming pitbulls, especially ones who are usually kept on chains. I'm upset with the fact that they are running a puppy mill. Guess what animal control said when they called about these dogs: shoot them!! I couldn't believe it. Furthermore, I suspect one of my neighbors might be abusing their puppy. Their dog keeps coming onto our property, and its a small, harmless dog but likes to play/fight with Brody, so we take the dog back over to the neighbors. Well, I suspected that the dog might be abused because he spends most of his day at our house. Then when my brother took him home this weekend, my sister in law said that the people kicked their dog 4 times (for escaping from the property maybe?) Then I could hear my brother leaving their house and a couple of seconds later, I heard the puppy cry for at least 30 seconds - I am suspecting that they were beating him. It was horrible. However, I know with Oklahoma laws, as long as these people are feeding and giving water to their dog (which they are), the law does nothing to protect the dogs. It horrible!!! I am never taking the puppy back over to their house again. I want to steal him and take care of him myself, but for that, I would probably get in trouble. Isn't that dumb? Sorry for the ranting but I am starting to get so annoyed with the laws in Oklahoma concerning dogs.

| Oklahoma Legals Holly, it is a shame that Oklahoma has no dog laws. I can't get any response from animal control either because we too live in the country. But, I have had good luck with the sheriff. There was one up the road that was tied 24/7 regardless of weather with only an A-frame dog house. It's open back end faced the north! The sheriff came out and somebody got rid of the dog. I called them over a puppy mill up the road - never saw or had any feedback - BUT the pens are now empty! Several years ago a stray took up residence on our front porch. We lived in town and as it turned out, he belonged a couple of blocks over. But, no one came looking for him so I gave him to a friend who liked him. When the people did come looking (about 3 weeks later) I just said he used to be here but he's gone now. Hope you can find a way to rescue your neighbor's dog, too. Keep in touch and let me know what happens. rversonthego@gmail.com Thanks for taking the time to answer. Jeanne |

| That's a good idea to call the sherriff - We will have to try that. If you are in the Oklahoma City area, we are having a Yorkie meet-up on August 13th. I'm not sure where the specific thread for this is, but if you do a search for Oklahoma, you can find it.
