I left a post about anyone knowing of breeders near Middlebury, IN. Well here is why I asked. We bought a little boy from this breeder at Morning Star Kennels, but we never actually went to the kennels. Which should have been a red flag. We met at a "adoption agents" house. Well needless to say we fell in love with the little boy.(his name is Meaty, my husband named him.

We got him home and on his first day I noticed an umbilical hernia. I emailed the "adoption agent" and she said she or the breeder or the vet saw no evidence of one. I thought this was odd because I took one look at his belly and saw it. Our reason for buying him was to breed him and that is out the window now because hernias are possibly passed on. We love him anyway and wouldn't trade him for nothing, but I just feel that maybe I was lied to. I wanted to just sort of warn anyone else buying from that area to be careful. And to see if anyone else has had a simular experiences.

Any warning concerning unscrupulous breeders is always welcomed. It's really getting difficult to know who is trustworthy and who isn't. I have one Yorkie from a puppymill, one from a byb who was so mean, and a third from another byb. All these purchases were made before YT educated me. I'm still concerned that I might not be careful enough when the time comes for me to purchase another Yorkie. Hope you little fellow will be okay and have a long happy life with you.

I just now saw this. My Abby has bilateral hernias that we hope to have repaired when she's spayed. Our vet and the breeder both said they may take care of themselves, but so far they haven't. (the breeder we got Abby from told me that she had the hernias.)

I hope Meaty is doing well.

he seems fine so far. we heard the same thing that it might heal it self but so far it hasn't I hope that he doesn't have to have surgery for it. he is very small and putting him under would worry me.

Hi there again! I just saw this post of yours and was wondering if you could explain to me what a bilateral hernia is. And also...since our little ones are from the same litter...should I be worried? The breeder nor my vet has said anything to me about a hernia. And now I'm kind of scared. I don't know what it is and would greatly appreciate any information! Thank you!!!

Sorry for your bad luck but I'm so glad you really like Meaty. He probably needs alot of TLC. Its so hard to go out and look for yorkies from people you don't know if you can trust or not. It seems to be getting worse and worse all the time. Good thing you posted to let others know of this situation and where to watch out for things. We can never have too much info on bad locations to watch out for. Hope your little guy makes it out okay.

No, No, No! Don't worry! Abby was the only one in the litter with the hernia. It's not a big deal at all and Abby can absolutely live with it, we just want it repaired, just incase it should ever give her any discomfort.

Chanel is fine!

The hernia is a little buldge in her belly. Bilateral means it's on both sides. It's a strain in the tummy. It could be a birth defect or something that happened later on? We aren't sure. When I pointed it out to my vet, he wasn't concerned at all and said that we would just keep an eye on it and that maybe it would repair itself. I don't think it has so far. Abby is going to the vet tomorrow for her last shot and we'll look at the hernia again to reevaluate. It has never caused her any pain or problems. She spunky, active and a little love bug

Okay. Thank you for clearing that up for me! I'm so sorry though that Abby has it!

I wish her the best at the vet tomorrow! Chanel had the last of her shots last Friday!!! I was so excited! This weekend she'll be ready to go outside and play in the sun!

I thought about getting her a little baby pool. My husband thinks I'm crazy! LOL

It's so nice to find someone who can answer questions...that knows where my puppy came from...that might be going through the same things! I really feel like my husband and I aren't in this alone anymore!

I am so glad I saw your post! I purchased my baby from a breeder in March and my vet has since seen signs that she was not a very responsible breeder. I wouldn't trade my LexiLyn for anything, but I have felt bad for supporting that type of breeding. So far I've been very lucky with her health and I hope things go well with your boy. I am a newbie to yorkies and I'm so happy I found YorkieTalk to learn from!!

Isn't it horrible the conditions that some dogs are born in whether it be a byb or puppymill etc. They didn't ask to be born and they need love and care too. I understand why people are afraid and sometimes the cost is terrible and some are so sick they don't make it even after the best of care. But, I am just grieved about the dogs. I could just sit down and bawl at some of the things you see and hear. I can't even watch the dog cops on Animal Planet it is so sad. I just can't stand to see any animal abused or hurt. THe people that run these puppymills should be thrown back so far in jail or prison they would never see daylight.

Both of our dogs I should not have purchased. One was from a pet store and the other was from the breeder I mention starting the post. I wasn't strong enough in either case to say no. I have since learned my lesson and if and when we buy another dog I will for sure do better research. The breeder that we bought Meaty from, there were so many red flags. The puppy was brought to a womans home that wasn't the breeder, I never even met the breeder. But in the end I couldn't leave him there. I'm glad we didn't, he is such a wonderful, dog. I just hope that there are people out there that are stronger and can say NO when the situation just doesn't seem right.

I purchased my baby from a breeder in March and my vet has since seen signs that she was not a very responsible breeder. I wouldn't trade my LexiLyn for anything, but I have felt bad for supporting that type of breeding. So far I've been very lucky with her health and I hope things go well with your boy. I am a newbie to yorkies and I'm so happy I found YorkieTalk to learn from!!
