| My Yorkie terrified of fireworks. Must I have her sedated on the night? Hi there everyone I am new and my username is Franceen. I have just taken on a 4 and a half year old yorkie from someone, who was not looking after her as well as they should have been. They then decided that they didn't really want her!! How can people like this exist??!! At least she wasn't hurt and she has now, at this late stage, had her shots and her nails done by the vet, as well as a general check up. After a few days of getting used to us I then took her to the doggie palour and they did a reasonably good job and all the ladies there wanted to take her home! She is so sweet natured and loves a cuddle. What sort of people don't care about such a dear little animal? I will go to the help and nutrition and after this, for advice about feeding her. In the UK where I live, we have fireworks night on 5th November (called Guy Fawkes Night) and people just go crazy making the loudest bangs and have large exciting firework displays, which go on well into the night. A few days before Guy Fawkes Night - which is awful tradition, I think, as there are nicer things to celebrate - and a few days afterwards, they let off big bangs and rockets at odd times during the day and in the evenings. Eventually their pocket money runs out and it stops. We are having the odd bang and firerocket going off already and Tootsy (this is the name she was given) is terrified. She leaps up barking ferociously and then rushes to be picked up and cuddled. When you pick her up she is trembling with fear. What are we going to do when everyone has their fireworks going off in the neighbourhood? I get upset thinking about it!! I thought of going to the vet and asking him to give her a strong sedative that will knock her out for the night. Then again, he could just give her too much and kill her!!! What can I do? Has anyone any suggestions. Hope you can help me. Love Franceen xxx |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Hi and welcome to YT! First my advice is to not baby her when she acts like this around the fireworks. your just letting her know that its ok to be scared and bark and cower. WHen she acts up, tell her its ok, and then go back to whatever you were doing and ignore her. You can ask your vet for a sedative. Its not going to kill her. They'll probably prescribe acepromazine which is a common sedative.

| Hi kalina82 Thank you for the welcome. So you feel I should not cuddle her when she jumps on my lap for reassurance? She really trembles with fear. If you are sure that the sedative won't be a risk to her, I think I will get one from the vet. Thanks for your reply. Love Franceen xx |

If you think she's really gonna be bad, get a sedative from the vet. You need to start giving it to her a few hours or at least a day before hand for her a stay calm. You can also put her in a room of the house that you think will be the quietest. i live in a basement and its very quiet down here. i hardly ever here thunderstorms or fireworks so my dog never gets scared of loud noises. If she does hear something and startles i tell her its ok and then go back to whatever i was doing or just ignore her.

| Cuddling does reassure them of their behavior.....I have a couple of yorkies that are frieghtened of Thunder.....acting as if nothing was wrong broke them of feeling frightened.....This information was given to me by an animal behaviorist........They take their cue from your energy..

| This is very true, you can not pick them up and baby them, if she sleeps in a crate, put her in it(you can cover the crate with a blanket) they need to get somewhere they can feel safe..My shih tzu is deathly afraid of storms and fireworks, she shakes really bad..you can give them benadryl also, it will help calm them, but ask your vet as to how much for the weight..I think it's like 1 mg. per pound..there are also herbal things out there to help with them..I also have sedatives from the vet, but only have one left.. good luck with your baby..she sounds precious |

| Chip used to be scared of thunderstorms, he would tuck his tail between his legs and crawl into somewhere hidden. He didn't bark, pant, jump or any type of that behaviour. I didn't coddle, snuggle, baby talk him during the storms, I would keep on watching TV or whatever else I was doing at the time. Now during storms he lies out in the open in his snuggle ball, like any other day. We are still working on fireworks though. He's fine when we are inside the house, but when we are outside on a walk and hears the fireworks he literally starts running for the hills. I think the fireworks remind him of when he was shot as young pup, so this is something we still need to work on. |

I never thought of it like that - thanks so much. I realise now that I would be encouraging her reaction. Unfortunately, there isn't a room that is quieter than another in our home. We listened in every room in the house, when they let off some fireworks the day before yesterday, and they sound just as loud whichever room you are in. We have a few days before the big night and I will try the ignoring thing and see if she calms down. She is such a little darling and it always amazes me how trusting animals can be even though they have had unhappy experiences with owners in the past. She is sitting on my desk, on her fleece blanket, watching me on the computer! Thanks again for your advice, I have so much to learn! Love Franceen xx | |

| Thanks for your replies, grayxie, Mardelin and hha. I am so pleased I I asked you guys about this otherwise I would have made matters worse with all the comforting. Thanks, too, for the sedative advice, hha. As I said to kalina82, I will see if my ignoring her fear will work over the next few days. If not I will go to the vet a couple of days before fireworks night and ask for a sedative. Love Franceen xx |

| Hi Franceen and welcome to YT. My Murfee also is afraid of loud noises and thunderstorms. He always goes and hides somplace...under the bed, in a closet or behind the bathroom door. He shakes but doesn't like to be cuddled when he is afraid, but just by reading this thread I learned a lot. I have always wanted to cuddle him and now I know I'm not supposed to Good luck with all the big bangs. |
