| Ughk! Dumb people with Yorkies makes me mad! I was walking in the mall today with a couple of friends. My friend sees this girl, I would say 18-19 years of age, holding a teeny tiny dog. She was like "Oh my gosh, look at that little puppy!" I was like "Aww, that's cute." When we walked up to her, people were petting her and "Oohing and ahhing" at the puppy. My friend asked her what kind of puppy it was. She was like "Oh, she's a teacup Yorkie". My first reaction was "Oh, great..". So, I went ahead and asked how old her "teacup Yorkie" was and she said that she just picked her up and the Yorkie is 7 weeks old!! I striked up a conversation with her and said that I own a Yorkie as well named Fred but he was at home. I asked her how much she paid for her puppy. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. $1,800.00! I know that's not a lot to some of you but to me, that's a gripload! I told her it was great meeting her and that there is a great forum for Yorkies at Yorkietalk.com (You're welcome, Dan!) if she ever had trouble with her dog and needed advice. Now, if my YT-credited Yorkie knowledge is correct.. puppies like that should NOT be taken out in public without all their shots which is around 16 weeks. This puppy was TINY. She was holding her puppy in the palm of her hand. The puppy had a loose rhinestone collar on it with BITSY in flashy letters and was already carrying a purse to put her puppy in. This girl was flaunting this poor little dog and I bet she didn't know how to take care of it! I kept my cool while speaking with her and I am proud of myself for doing so. I am sorry but after all that I have learned (thanks to YorkieTalk of course), this kind of stuff, well frankly.. ticks me off! I just had to vent! |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | This is what the celebs started and it's a scary thing. That poor baby. I know I got blasted once for calling someone stupid ....(who was) but I'll take a chance and agree that that girl is carrying around that poor baby for attention only and to me that is a stupid reason to get a yorkie. I think it's going to happen more and more and the yorkies suffer in the long run....that IS too tiny to have at the mall |

| Do you realize she may be reading this post shortly? But yes, people all should be educated better when they get a Yorkie puppy (or any puppy for that matter) as to what the do's and don'ts are... But some breeders (or pet stores or where ever they get a Yorkie from) really aren't into educating the new Yorkie parent and doing what may be best for the Yorkie... |

| What I do when I see something like that is try to explain to them why they shouldn't have the puppy out in public. It is always better to try and talk to someone on their level and you would be surprised when they thank you. It really is better than just getting mad and calling them ignorant. |

| Shes gonna be sorry when her too young too little pup gets sick on her. She should not be taken it out at all. Tiny ones become stressed very easily. I didn't take Jewels my 3 lb yorke out untill she had all of her shots. Plus like I said they stress easy. Jewels would get sick just from the car rides to the vet. Silly silly people.

| You are correct. Bet her baby is sick within a week and it is all HER idiocy fault!! That is actually cheap for a pet shop tiny Yorkie around here and they will finance for 3 years. I DO NOT LET ANYONE PET ANY OF MY PUPPIES/DOGS! I rarely take them out except for the vet visit and that is when we go to Petsmart. I have a sign that I post on the crate or lay in the cart on top of the blankie and my purse. It says "Mom says ask before you pet me!" and it works. It gets noticed before the person reads the words....I teach the person the proper way to pet a dog AFTER getting perission from the owner... Hey, keep your paws off of my puppy or risk a tongue lashing from me...I sound really mean, huh? So be it!! |

| The scary things is that before we got Maximus we didn't know much about petstores and went into a local petstore by our home...they wanted 1600 for the 8 week old yorkie pup and 1400 for the slightly larger and older 10 weeks yorkie...THESE ANIMALS LOOKED MISERABLE...and so I did a search to see WHY?..this is how I found out about puppy mills...this was almost a year ago...and I finally got Maximus from a breeder almost 2-1/2 months ago...how fast time fly's...I feel like I have LEARNED so much from you guys...really I do..and I want to say Thanks!!!

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I know exactly how you feel...anytime I see someone carrrying around a small puppy, esp. a yorkie I just want to tell them to be careful...we used to take our girls out but it was only shortly and we did not do it for any attention, just didn't like leaving them at home at first....I really hate it when someone acts like they know what they are talking about when they use the word teacup or tiny...but I am way to nice to say anything but I wish I could, they need to know!!!

| In most states in the US it is illegal for a pet store or hobby breeder to sell puppies less than 8 weeks old. FL is one of those states thank goodness! A puppy who is only 7 weeks old doesn't have a mature immune system and is very prone to getting ill. It is never a good idea to pass around a small puppy amongst folks - never! It is very stressful for the puppy and it's the parents who need to be educated You wouldn't believe how many yorkie dogs we get into rescue because the owners purchased on an "impulse", and did no research about what to expect, etc. That's what makes ME mad! Folks seeing the celebs walking around with their supposed "teacup" doggies - basically "pocket pets" and folks run to the local pet store to purchase one just like them, sometimes to fulfill their own need of self worth, never giving a thought as to what to expect with the breed. | Worries me The biggest problem with "fad" pups or pups that are bought as a fashion statement is so many of them end up neglected or sent to shelters as they "outgrow" the tiny cute pocket stage or become discarded as yesterdays news. Then they are turned into rescue groups or shelters and have some problems due to the neglect and sometimes abuse of the fashion conscious but not dog conscious owners. Remember when the taco bell dog got popular, everyone had to have a chihuahua, then they ended up in shelters. I volunteered in the past at rescues and the SPCA and I used to get so upset at the tiny dogs who were thrown away like old pairs of shoes. A dog is a commitment, for its entire lifetime, not something to get to accessorize your fashions or to be "in". Ticks me off and someone that would expose a tiny pup that size and young to an environment filled with people and their assorted germs and bacteria is not a responsible person and should not have a dog. |

| you know i mentioned this in a post awhile ago about alot of younger people buying these "teacup" dogs and treating them like a fashion statement and i must say it has gotten worse....for that puppy to be 7 wks he should still be with his mommy isn't that too young to leave the parent? i find this to be so sad, but this is the world we live in today people buying dogs like thier an accessory just to look important and to get the attention that they probably don't get from just being themselves. sorry guys but this really burns me up my niece goes to high school and she told me that girls are like bringing thier little dogs to school just to show off!!how horrible is that.

| That is horrible...I wouldn't even let Maximus go out till he was done with all his hots and a week passed as per vet's orders...I now bring him to the park 2x a week for a walk..which I think is beginning to get too hot for him...and I try to bring him with me do to errands (where they allow him)..i.e..dropping off movies at blockbuster, drycleaners, I walked him around the mall yeaterday because it was too hot and they opened a "luxury" petstore...gag..in there so damnit my dog is allowed..and no one said anything...but when people ask me DUMB and I mean dumb questions (I was asked in Petsmart if Maximus could get some ladies yorkie pregnant..because she wanted her to have a litter...ask me if this pup had even been brought to the vet yet???) I take it as an oppotunity to tell them owning a yorkie is NO cakewalk..I love Maximus and wouldn't trade him for the world but they do require sacrifice and not everyone is prepared for that

| You're so "right on" JessCruz! Whenever I see any celebrity with a tiny little cutsie dog, I just wanna scream cuz I know that many uneducated folks who see those dogs will automatically want to go out and purchase one, without doing any of the legwork to find out about the breed, etc. ( BTW, I saw a pix of Whitney Houston with a yorkie in one of the tabloids the other day). And you're right about them being discarded when they become too big to "fit in your pocket" or outgrow that precious cute little puppy stage. By that time they may have been neglected or far worse, and the rescue groups have to spent weeks and months to try and correct those bad behaviors. As far as folks carrying tiny little very young pups into the public - those are the same folks who will do the same with newborn infants. Not giving a thought as to what they could expose the pups to. But as a member of a national rescue group, one of our missions is to educate - and I try to do that in the most considerate way. Whenever I see someone with a yorkie or other small-breed dog walking them with a collar instead of a harness, I usually say something like "you may want to consider using a harness when you walk your dog due to their small trachea and that would eliminate the possibility that it could become collapsed". Some folks appreciate the advice, others don't,but at least I've tried and possibly "planted a seed". Dianne Schultz Member, Board of Trustees Regional Coordinator-Florida United Yorkie Rescue www. | I agree all the way. I kept Maggie home with me, until she had all her shots too. Even my family thought I was trying to hide some secret, because I wouldn't take Maggie out in the public. I hope the young lady knows what she has in the palm of her hand. These babies are not toys, but a sincere responsibility. You just can't ooohhh and ahhhh for a day or two. Their close attention lasts a lifetime.

| That had to be hard not to say anything to the girl. Obviously she wouldn't have listened anyway. I have people wanting to come over and hold new born babies. Heck No! I do let the people who put deposits on them come and see them before pick up if they like, when they're 6 weeks old. I can't image the stress on that puppy if she's dragging it around all day. |
