Question Hello I'm new here

Hi everyone. I just found your site, and I am happy I did. I'm sure you all will be a great resource. We are picking up our yorkie on Friday; we are thinking of the name "Misty". We have 3 cats, but Misty will be our first dog. I have always loved yorkies, and it will be so wonderful! I think! I am excited but also getting a little nervous. I have read some of the posts here about trouble with housebreaking....well that makes me nervous!

Misty has been crate trained at the breeder's and the breeder uses piddle pads, but Misty is only about 9 weeks old, and so not much will be done in regards to housebreaking. I have been reading about housebreaking, and it seems there are two ways to go about it: piddle pads and taking her outside. But I don't know which way to start out. It seems like piddle pads can have advantages like when we are gone or it's raining and cold, but I want her to know how to go outside too. Can we use both methods, or will that confuse her? Can we introduce a second method later, and if so, when? I also like the idea of buying a bell for the door, so she can communicate to us. But when does that fit in?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to succeed at housebreaking, it would be appreciated.

I'll probably have more concerns later, but for now that's it!!

I did both when I got Deiter. I had the pads in the xpen, and by the door. But I took him out side about every half hour. Then if I seen him look like he was going to go, I would place him on the pad and tell good potty. This is what worked for me. He was house broke by 6 months old. I still keep them down just in case.
Good luck, and Congratulations...

Welcome to YT!! We have also trained all our pups both on pads and outdoors. It works for us. My philosophy on housebreaking is to make it very difficult to make a mistake. That means a BIG commitment from you tho. But a few months of hard work will get you more than 10 potty-problem-free years. What works for us: when they are little they sleep in a crate only big enough for them to turn around. Since they don't want to potty where they sleep, they will learn to hold it. Give them very limited play area when they aren't in the crate and watch them like a hawk ALL the time for signs of pottying. Take them to the pad or outside often (every 30-40 minutes to start). As they are pottying, say "Good Potty" and act like you're at Disneyland. Be SOOOOO excited and give the best treat you can. Start to expand their time out of the kennel and their play area very very gradually.

We have a 10 year old Shi Tzu. We have a potty pad down in the basement for him. He goes to the stairs and waits for me to say "Outside" or "Downstairs" depending on the weather. If no one is available for him to ask, he'll go downstairs and then RUN up the stairs and dance and beg telling us that he's gone potty and needs his treat.

Good Luck to ya!!

Welcome to YT first of all and congrats on thew new furkid Misty!!

My dogs just didnt use pee pads..the harder I tried the more frustrated I got with them..I find that outdoor training is easier for me..but you will see for yourself soon enough..little boxes that hold pee pads are a neat idea too!!

Make sure to post a ton of pics when she comes home!!

Welcome to Y.T.!.....I use pads and he goes out side.... it works out great for us because when it's raining and in the dead of winter he doesn't want to go out so the pad is always available.....

you want to decide which way to go, then stick with it, otherwise, you will do nothing but confuse the puppy...If you want to keep her on pee pads, then just do that..All 3 of mine are trained to pee pads...when it's nice out, I let them all out in the back yard to play, my little boy will also pee outside, but, he's stictly pee pad trainer, I never let him out to use the bathroom outside, he will just do it when he's out there..if you train the puppy first to go outside, it's almost impossible to get them to use the piddle pads..but, you can train her to piddle pads, then later have her start going outside, just move the piddle pad closer to the door..when you see her going to it, then you can take her outside..I bought a 6 mo. old biewer that was trained to go outside, I ended up having to sell her because she refused to go on the pee pads, that's when I started surfing the web and found that once they go outside, it's virtually impossible to get them to use the pads..but, it could be done pee pads to outside..so, the choice is yours, I prefer the pee pads, as I don't like standing out in the rain, and if we go away for a few hours, we don't have to rush back..the other alternative if you want to have her go outside, is to buy a doggie door..the decision has to be yours...I do suggest if you use piddle pads, to go to www.drsfostersmith.com and try there xtra piddle pads, as they are the best by far..little more expensive, but, you don't have to change them out as much, and they're much better made..

welcome to YT.
if you do a search on here for the potty training issues, you will find all sorts of helpful tips. best tip yet is to become a hawk.
3 of mine are potty trained outside but the 4th one is paper trained. she will come inside to potty on her pee pad and head right back outside when she is done.
