Yorkie Lover Donating Member | How long are they puppies??? I was just wondering how long Yorkies are considered to be puppies?? The other day at the pet store one of the workers told us that for little breeds that they are considered to be puppies longer than normal, like 16 months...and that we should continue to feed them puppy food that long...is this true??? I have never heard that before but he really seemed to know what he was talking about!!!

Hi Kristin!! I'm confused too as I would have thought the exact opposite was true i.e. our little ones mature earlier than the big dogs? I'm going by the fact that they are full grown a lot earlier? Ana xx

I always thought it was the other way around. Large breed are consider puppies longer because they do not stop growing or mentally mature until they are between 1-3 years old but small dogs stop growing and are mentally mature about 6-12months.

I have always thought dogs were puppies until a year old, I don't know why though. I would ask your vet when you should switch from puppy food to adult food.

Our vet told us they were considered pups for 2 years, although that seems a long time, Lucy seemed pretty much done with growing and coat change by 1 year
