| Thank Goodness For The "search Button" Baby Gracie Leigh has been to the vet 3 times since I got her, and she's healthy, but one visit was for bloody gel in her stool. I see this morning that it's back, and I'm about to call the vet and bring in a sample. Last time she was put on Albon for 5 days and it went away. The vet said it could be a parasite that can't always be seen in the stool sample, so she medicated her anyway. This time, panic was beginning to set in though - so I pulled out my laptop, came to YT, hit Search, and found that Brooke's little Tatum went through this recently. You guys gave her lots of advice on how to feed her, which I will use. I feel so much better now. Of course, I'm calling the vet as soon as I post this. I'm so glad Tatum's okay, Brooke, and that I thought to use Search instead of worrying all day until people responded to my new post. I'll update later. Here's a picture of my messy little sweetie. She needs a haircut desperately, but she's a pretty little girl under all that messy fur.

| I took Gracie Leigh's poop to the vet (gross!). She has giardia and is now on Flagyl. The vet put Max on it too since it's contagious. I have to really keep after her and clean up her poop fast. The vet said she can eat whatever, but I don't agree. Aittle worrielccording to what I read here, the less diarrhea she has, the better she'll feel and the less chance of it spreading back and forth. I'm a little worried. I'm giving her Nutrical to be sure her sugar doesn't drop.

| Hi Judy...I'm glad you got it figured out what is wrong with little Gracie. It is always so scary when these little ones get sick and even scarier when you see blood. I don't know much about giardia, but I know if they have it, it's important to clean up the poop asap. I guess it can get into the ground or something? I'm not a lot of help. Just want to wish you and Gracie well and we send get well kisses to Gracie.

| Judy, I know it's late where you are Hon,(and you're hopefully sleeping), but I am just so upset for you about Gracie Leigh. I did a little research, and the encouraging news is that once diagnosed, Giardia is very treatable with most dogs having an excellent prognosis. My Spanky had it about 5 years ago; it took two rounds of medications, but she recovered just fine. I do remember though that the Vet had her on a special diet, that is easily digested by the poor affected little tummy. Here are some links with info: http://www.vetcentric.com/reference/...ness&MODE=full http://www.canismajor.com/dog/giardia.html http://www.flatcoat.com/giardia.htm http://www.priory.com/vet/giardia.htm Here is a quote from the first site on prognosis: "Giardia is a very treatable condition. Most dogs recover quickly and do not have additional problems. However, if proper preventive steps are not taken, it is common for dogs with a previous history of Giardia to become re-infected." Have you spoken to your Vet about steps to take once Gracie is pronounced healthy, to prevent reinfestation? Spanky's did return, albeit in a milder form, about 6 weeks later. After that, we never saw a reccurence. If there is absolutely anything I can do please let me know. I will check in with you in the morning, Lauren

| Thanks y'all! Try getting a pill down 2 yorkies' throats twice/day! My thumb has been bitten up! Lauren - thanks so much for the articles. I was going to sit down and look up giardia, and you saved me the work. I'm a little nuts right now, walking around with paper towels and detergent, cleaning up anything that even looks brown. What should I disinfect with? I'm thinking spray Lysol. I can spray the carpets, the couch, etc. (Ya think I'm a little fanatic? You should see the picture of a giardia - yuck!)

"Giardia may be prevented by the strict sanitation of animal living environments using cleaning agents approved for the elimination of the parasite. In kennels and other places that house animals in larger numbers, routine disinfection of the entire facility is critical. Dogs should be bathed in order to eliminate any Giardia cysts they may be carrying in their coats. The periodic use of de-worming medications such as fenbendazole may also be effective in preventing the recurrence of Giardia infection." I think you should ask your Vet which cleaning solution would be appropriate. One point I found repeatedly, is the importance of washing your hands frequently. I would also think you should apply disinfectant lotion to your hands; there are many on the market and can be purchased at any drug store. Also, in my research last night, I found reference to a vaccine for Giardia. However, from what I read, it is NOT recommended, especially for small dogs, as there can be neurological side effects. Another recommendation I found, is that the dog be fed a special low residue diet as it is easier for them to digest while they are symptomatic. From what I remember, Spanky was given Science Diet S/D, but I think there are better products on the market today. Oh I do hope Gracie Leigh is doing better today. Please, please keep us updated when you have the time. Hugs, Lauren

I just found an excellent article here: http://www.priory.com/vet/giardia.htm It actually refers to a Beagle Kennel, but I would think the disinfection and prevention section is for all dogs. This is what they recommend: "washing everything down with a mixture consisting of 8 ounces of Clorox bleach per gallon of water. Make sure you let it set at least 20 minutes, rinse thoroughly, and then let it get completely dry before letting your Beagles use the kennels again. Important Note: The efficacy of killing is increased by prolonged contact time, therefore disinfectant solution should be left for 20 minutes to half an hour before being rinsed off kennel or run surfaces." Another useful quote from the same site: " The following are recommendations for eliminating coccidia from kennels and homes: - treat all dogs with sulfadimethoxine for 10 days - disinfect kennel areas, etc, with quaternary ammonium disinfectants (such as bleach solution above) which are effective in inactivating coccidia oocysts - bathe dogs with shampoo to remove all fecal matter, rinse with water - rinse dogs with quaternary ammonium disinfectants, then water - allow kennels to dry thoroughly for several days - retreat with sulfadimethoxine for 7 days - treat any new dogs with sulfadimethoxine (e.g. Albon) for 10 days even if they test negative for coccidia because it is so hard to detect in fecal tests." That last paragraph (I italicised it) makes me wonder about Max. Perhaps you should ask your Vet about this. Argh! I feel so bad for you that you cannot experience the sheer bliss of having this new baby, without it being marred by this illness.

or chicken and rice. I read about the bleach, but I can't use it on the rugs or couch, unless I want an all white house. One of those aerticles mentioned Lysol, whicdh is why I thought of the spray. The hand disinfectant does sound like a good idea. Thanks!

I just thought of something I saw advertised on TV recently. I think it is called Clorox disinfecting spray, and it is safe to even use around babies. In the commercial, you see them spraying high-chair trays, and many other surfaces. I notice in the picture you posted of Gracie, that you have a hard surface floor. You could safely spray that with this product. How is she doing today? How is her appetite? Has it been affected at all? I just wish I could reach through this screen and make it all better for the three of you. Just remember, my Spanky came through it just fine, she is now 12 years old, and has not had a recurrence in years. Also, you should know, that when she had Giardia, she did not transmit it to my other Yorkie then, Tigger (MHDSRIP). Hugs to you all; hope today is better than yesterday, and tomorrow is better still. Lauren

| Today, after my pottery class, I picked up all of the pads and replaced them. I sprayed the kitchen, hall living room and bathroom wherever they go with Lysol, until this huge can was empty. Then I bathed them. Now I'm disinfecting the bathtub and sink where they were bathed. It was the little one's first bath! I took al of their toys - I'll deal with them tomorrow, as well as their beds and my blanket. Shoved the pills down their throats, and that's all I can do right now. Oh - I also went to a 99 cent store and bought enough tablecloths (for under her ex-pen) for 10 days and towels for Gracie Leigh to sleep on. The whole thing cost me about $16.00. It's easier to just throw them out than disinfect them. I'm going to look for a safe disinfectant tomorrow. They're knocked out from watching me and from their baths.

How is Gracie now? does she still have the energy for puppy zoomies? Poor little girl, horrible parasite to attack such a teeny Yorkie Morsel. Hope you ALL have a great sleep tonight. Lauren Edit: I forgot one more thing that I read - it's a good idea to pour boiling water over their feeding/water bowls. This is especially important for their drinking water, which tends to sit for a few hours at a time.
