| Anyone compete in Agility or Obedience?!?! I was talking to a handler friend of mine today and he suggested looking into it. I would love to get into showing conformation but right now I am blessed with copper and he is not a show dog. Just looking for general info on Agility and obedience. How did you get started, pros and cons, training, basically I don't know anything except what I have seen on TV. I think that it looks like alot of fun and that copper would really enjoy having his own "job." Opinions and experiences would be nice. Thankyou in advance- Amy

| The lady who teaches Kiwi's obedience classes also competes in agility and obedience with her dogs. So she told us about the local clubs that have the equipment and stuff. Maybe you could find an instructor or the local agility/obedience club near you? The one near me allows you to practice on their equipment for a small fee ($5 or something) or you can join their club. Kiwi is still a bit young, so we haven't started yet, but we met some of the people who participate and they all seem very helpful and willing to explain stuff to a newbie. Good luck!

| I am calling arround to a couple of local trainers, hoping I can find something out. That would be great if our local club would let us practice like that. I will find out more as time goes on. Copper is still alittle young too, I think. But I am trying to learn what I can now. Thank you, it really looks like they would have a ball out there!

| GO FOR IT ......it is a blast!!.....I started my yorkie Millee w some practice sessions when she was one but since she had the LP the vet suggested we do not continue.........so we did Pet Therapy for years ....but when she was 5yrs a local instructor bought the indoor matting that was gentle on the joints so we did it again for awhile....(yorkies only have to do little jumps so it's really easy on them anyway)...last month I completed the beginner class w my biewer Truffles who is 6 mos and he loved it!!!!! It socializes them and bonds the two of you. Ask your local instructors what you can be doing w your young pup at home before you even start a class........the biggest thing is getting them used to the equipment and even putting a board on the floor and letting him walk across it at home (while praising him w treats )is HUGE...I bought a kitty tunnel also just to get him used to the tunnel.......THE KEY IS GRADUALLY GET THEM USED TO IT SO THE ARE NOT AFRAID OF THE EQUIPMENT.....but get the specifics because you don't want to train him incorrectly and then have to retrain the correct way.... here is a good page that has lots of information including the associations and a super magazine.......... http://www.countrysideagility.com/resources.htm |
