| Experienced yorkie owners, question about bladder infection? Maggie is 18 months old, had a bladder infection this past january, cleared up with amoxicillin, xrays determined no kidney stone, she has been fine until last week, had blood in her urine, so I took her to the vet, didn't get urine sample, it's so hard with these little ones, and he gave her another round of amoxicillin. Blood in urine cleared up immediately, but she is still taking an unusually long time to urinate, she squats on her piddle pad and stays there a long time before she gets up.and yesterday she would squat and just urinate a tiny bit, two or three times in a row, not on her piddle pad but beside it, so obviously she is still having issues. I've given her the amoxicillin twice daily since last Thursday morning and still have quite a bit left to give her. Should I be taking her back to the vet, or do I need to give it more time to work? She seems otherwise fine, playful, eating and drinking well. Vet bills are so expensive, I don't want to take back unnecessarily, but I will if you all tell me that medicine should have cleared it up by now. Thanks for the help. | did you do an x-ray for stones again this time? She could have developed crystals or stones since January. Lacy just had a mild UTI and is still on antibiotics for it. She wasn't straining or anyting - just having accidents and drinking more. If yours is straining a lot and antibiotics aren't helping, you should probably do a urine culture to see if there is a bacteria that is causing a UTI that needs a different antibiotic or look for stones again

| Ellie had a very similar situation this year. She was peeing in odd places so we went to the vet. There was bacteria in her urine so she took antibiotics. It seemed to come back shortly after that. The vet couldn't get a sample this time so we did an xray. No stones! She put Ellie on Zeniquin this time. That seemed to help. She really hasn't had problems since. I was told that Yorkies with UTIs are considered a candidate for bile acid testing. We tested and the numbers are off. Dogs with this problem can, in some cases, get stones that don't show up on xray. So I don't know if it was a coincidence that she had a stubborn one or if it is because there is an underlying problem. It looks to be number two right now. I don't want to scare you. It's just a though. If there is still a problem after about three-fourths of the antibiotic is gone (I would think it would work by then) you should probably talk to your vet.

| It sounds very possible that your baby may have stones/crystals, and even though they did an x-ray, x-rays don't show all types of stones. There are stones/crystals that only show on an ultraound. My yorkie gets ammonium urate stones which are not visible on x-rays, only on ultrasounds. Honestly, I would have an u/s done to determine if she has them... Also, the vet should be able to get a sample himself. Actually, I prefer that the vet usually take the sample so that it's not contaminated in any way. Definitely have them do a urine culture along with the urinalysis.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | if she's been straining to pee the entire time you've had her on the antibiotics this time then i would suspect that she is blocked. a UTI doesn't usually cause them to strain and the ABs should have cleared up most of the infection by now. I think she needs to go back to the vet for an x-ray, and if there are stones she may need surgery.

| Instead of going to see the vet again, why don't you just try calling and talking to him or a vet tech. I know those vet bills can become outrageous.

| The two most common signs of bladder stones are hematuria (blood in the urine) and dysuria (straining to urinate). My Mickey had them and would squat to pee and there would only be a few drops. It is very painful to them and if not treated can kill them. Please have them do xrays on her again. Keeping her in my prayers. |

| Uti I have not researched this yet but my vet says UTI's & crystals are caused by too much protein in the food. My Jazzie was put on antibiotics, it seemed to have helped. Shortly after she was back to going frequently and going in several spots within minutes of going. I found a product called cranberry relief by Naturvet, I put half of the recommended scoop in her drinking water and the frequency has stopped. She can go 5-6 hours without tinkling, she is 5 months old. However if anyone else has had a different experience with this product, please let me know. Thanks Zanders' mom (& Jazzie too) Last edited by Zanders' mom; 10-03-2007 at 05:03 PM. |

| Bella had a similar problem last month there was no blood but she seemed be struggling when urinating. They gave her meds and it cleared up then the following week she was producing no urine and if she did it was only a few drops. I took her back and they tested for crystals and kidney stones she had none. I had them run every test possible. They did a physical exam and found that her anal glands were completely filled and she couldn't express them herself. They said she was in so much pain she couldn't urinate (sounds crazy I know) but after that she has been urinating fine.
